      Once again I feel completely safe in saying...you have NO idea what you're in for...maybe hard to believe after all you're so familiar with what tool brings at this point how could they blow you away further...:) Trust me...it will...forget about what all the toolheads are saying about the golden ratio n Fibonacci n all...that's for when you've heard it a few times n then u can jump onto the deeper sides of the song m album as a whole...for now do what i always do don't do any prior Research go in blond with only the lyrics open... preferably smoke a joint or have an edible an hour or so earlier but if Ur doing the whole clean thing it doesn't matter...a good pair of headphones with your eyes closed n LATERALUS is the only drug u will experience;) so envious of u discovering all this gold n experiencing it for the first time

      @humzakhalid7902 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Aaronsolnelson yeah it can...the whole phenomenon is well worth looking into beyond just it's relation to the song and album...as a post 10000 days Maynard said about them purposefully putting the Fibonacci stuff in the music it was very sophomoric or childish of them or something to that effect...since the Fibonacci sequence n all is naturally present in all things without having to force it in...the golden ratio existed in every part of nature from the miniscule to the infinite before humans were even aware of it so it's sort of presumptive to manually work it into things since it'll be there without them knowing or trying...as is true for the song...Adam n Danny had made the riffs n sequences nefore they realised that the time signatures went up n down the first few digits of the Fibonacci sequence...that's what inspired Maynard to make the lyrics follow them...so half of the Fibonacci sequence being a part of the song was natural the other half was manually added

  • @aaronlane5000
    @aaronlane5000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +94

    The story I heard about this song is that Tools record label wanted a "short fast song that could get radio play". So they made a fast song that gets slow in the middle and drawn out. A big F U to the label. This song doesnt really fit with the rest of the album but I guess Maynard had to get this off his chest.

  • @macarthur71

    Others may have already answered, but the gist of this song was a dispute with the record label and the band 'owed' them another song so they said...okay, here's your song. :) And they stuck the extra long interlude in the middle just so there's no possible way it could be a single.

    • @nathanmiller9918

      That's my understanding as well. Additionally, they have publicly stated that they've always compromised earnings in their label contracts in order to gain more creative control with their music, and it's release...then their label pulls that s. Understandably infuriating.

    I find the quiet interlude in this song to be one of the more disturbing moments on the album. There is a seething disquiet; a revolving acknowledgment of this negative pattern in the lyrics, framed by some disquieted growling in the background. Almost as if the internal dialogue is folding in on itself.
    We all know this sensation, those shadows that huddle close to the light. The passion that fuels transformation can so easily be turned back towards negativity. We have to fight for our light.

    Man what u said about parabol/parabola in the beginning...it's true it's one song n has to be heard back to back as one but...I'm here to tell u that hearing one without the knowledge of the other is a mind melting experience of its own...like for me I had heard schism n got onto tool when 10000 days came out n that was the only full album I had heard...then I got a cd of a "best of" compilation of tool n on that parabola was on its own n for months I had loved the song n has no idea about parabol existing..well after a few months sitting stoned listening to a friends iPod I was listening to his tool collection n parabol started playing...the guitar riff was the first hint it was the parabola chords played clean n in notes...I was confused why a song I knew was being played so differently...but it was sublime...the gorgeous vocals slowly building n the familiar parabola notes...n them he got to the "we barely remember" part n my eyes welled up with the burst of emotion...WHAT IS THIS?? An acoustic variant of parabola? N then when he got to " this body..." I literally sobbed with an overwhelming wave of emotion...it was so gorgeous...so other worldly ...n then it ended with the build up n it just clicked...cuz even though on his iPod parabola didn't follow parabol but being so familiar with parabola I knew then that the sudden start of the song was cuz this track parabol building up in the end lead directly into the burst of parabola n the pieces fell into place:) Ur words at the start of the video reminded me of my experience

In my experience, there are three dummers who played rhythms that, if anyone else played them, you'd be saying "That's too busy," but for them, it works. I remember that. Lateralus was so anticipated after Aenema. The rock scene had been decimated after grunge fell out and rap/rock gained popularity.
      Tool was smart to take a record deal that gave them less money in exchange for artistic control, and even then their record company tried to screw them.

    Really this is a great lonesome road trip album. I bought the album when it came out and still to this day it gets me.
    Btw as others pointed out you kind of have to do reflection, disposition, triaad and the laster interlude all as one. That will be a long video lol
    Tool did this album in an era when you couldnt expect to do well if you didnt have a few radio friendly songs. They through that out and 20 years later the album topped the streaming charts anyway.

      The very 1st time I bought this Album for myself in 2002 they were 2 weeks away from being in OKC and I had went to Wal-Mart only to find they only sold (PG) versions basically so I went to Hastings and they had 2 copies left of this and Aenima so I got all 3 and gifted the 2nd of this. Well I got to Schism as I was pulling into me and my Dad's driveway and instead of going into the house I laid my seat back and finished the album by myself' Just me and the guys. Only to go and see them for my 1st time at the Myriad Gardens on OKC 2002 and yes it was for me what it is for so many a spiritual awakening! I feel strange admitting this 20 years later, but during the part at the end of Parabola when Adam plays that "Muddy" little note at the end (y'all know the 1 I am referring too) but I began to weep 16 years old going through a lot and changes kind of not being able to breath the whole show to all of a sudden exhale and a Big giant tear plops on my lip and I started scream with the rest of the room. It was alot, but cathartic. Now Tool and I have partied together 11 times Lol, yeah just an amazing band live none like them!

    Skulls, I feel what you said about the progression and stylistic change of the band, from Undertow forward. Each new album is like listening to a new band at first because the sound is so significantly different. Then comes the realization that it IS the same band (sans D'Amour) that has grown, mastered the next level, and is learning to use the previous album as a stepping stone upward to new and better. LIFE is a journey and if I'm not changing, I'm doing something wrong! A baby doesn't say "Well, I've learned to crawl, I guess I'm done learning new and better things". The individual journey of life, in my opinion, and experience, is all about growing. The body grows first, then the mind, and finally the spirit. Then comes the final two chapters... 1) learning to use all three together and then 2) learning to help others do the same! TOOL is the tool that exemplifies that progression and offers the listener a demonstrative pathway to do the same!!!

    This song used to take me as out of place on the album but with every subsequent listen it feels more right. A kind of "stop sapping the energy I'm putting into being a better person (I've already seen someone commented the studio theory/story. Won't bore you repeating it)". The drums feel overwhelming. Like if you don't hold onto something they'll disintegrate you and Maynard's scream just pierces right through that weakened psyche. I don't know how else to put it... Then that instrumental bridge soothes and brings you back (I feel like everyone talks about Danny's "complex" drumming but I think he is just as on song when he just chimes the cymbals in those interludes). When the drums and vocals come back they no longer feel so abrasive. Like the gap fortified your resolve... Also this could just be me talking a bunch of shit. Awesome work as always man. Your passion for music is really great

    Great reaction and lyric breakdown as always! As others have mentioned, the story behind this song is that TOOL's record label demanded a heavier angrier track be included on the record and this is the result. It has big F U energy lol.
    Can't wait for your reaction to Lateralus, it is going to absolutely blow your mind. After that you might as well finish the rest of the album in one go because Disposition, Reflection, and Triad all go together and must be listened back to back. It is known among TOOL fans as the holy trinity and is truly transcendental. Spiral out! 🌀

    This is the one I wanted to see from this album. Next big one I want to see is 10000 days. Most powerful song I've ever heard, ever. Subbed just to see it, and you're going to want to get the tissues ready for that one too.

    Also note the spaceship taking off sound in the middle of this song right after the quiet part. It’s the same sound from the beginning of the album. So the album starts with that, and again in the middle of the album. This is all preluding to the last track

    Nice analysis. I see the comments are leaning toward a Label troll vs fans. Considering the placement of this track on the album, following some pretty "new" musical directions in "The Patient" and "Parabol/Parabola", this song feels like a cathartic, final release of anger. You've got 2 1/2 albums left to go, so you'll need to judge for yourself if this song marks a permanent shift in their musical direction.
    Looking forward to arguably a top three Tool song next week!

    Record label...the band was invovled in court with them for years leading up to this album over creative control. The label asked for a radio friendly "metal" song, so they purposely put the long break in the middle for it to not be radio friendly.

    Interesting how you related it to Hooker WAP, I relate it to Pushit. Having a relationship (or perhaps friendship) with someone who loves to take, is a energy vampire in some way etc.
    I love that themes pop up regularly and two songs then feel inexorably connected - but he's such an artist this can happen with different songs for each person :)

    I remember how much work it took to get through this album, but this song hit me immediately as soon as the drums started. There was just something so immensely satisfying when Danny Carey just starts a song off going crazy on the drums like he does with all that hard hitting because of work. He is definitely one of the top three best drummers of all time And overtime. His drumming has just continue to get better and better and better and better. He is a master behind his kit. I love that Manar decided to write a song and at the record companies, wanting him to write a hit single that’s good for rock radio and instead gave him this song and it was such a Beautiful kiss off to them, and it pretty much says that you can’t tell me what to do because this is my art and I will do with it as I see fit. This is hands-down, one of my top five favorite tool songs, and also one of my top five favorite Danny Carey performances recorded in the studio. A masterful song with a beautiful quiet section that lowers you until it hits you back hard at the end.🤘🤘🤘

      @@Skullzrapper I've been a Tool enthusiast since the literal beginning and have watched them evolve and they have helped me through so much nightmarish shit; I'd be far more fucked in the head if it wasn't for them. People constantly call Aenima (and before) an angry album, but throughout almost every song there is anger and then there is hope or a solution. In the Aenima song itself (a disgust for L.A.) it seems like he's hating on everyone, praying for destruction, but he's really just calling for change. Especially with the line "Don't just call me pessimist, try and read between the lines. I can't imagine why you wouldn't welcome any change my friend...". It really just helped me realize that I wasn't alone out here with my frustration with the state of my nation and my own life. Lots of stress relief in Aenima. Plus while Aenima may not be as "evolved" as later albums it was still far better than anything else at the time (and probably since) and still a masterpiece in its own right.

    You can understand how this would destroy a singers vocal cords so they rarely play this but I did see them live and they actually played it. If they do play it, Maynard uses a megaphone to supplement to save his vocals.
