I love throwing big bowls. I know it can be disappointing when you push a bit too far and lose it, but sometimes we learn more from our failures than our successes. If I lose one I put it on my plaster drying table for 30 mins then re-wedge and throw again. Usually with a bit less strength lol. So happy to see you are much the same and you keep going. Great job! Us beginners are in the same boat and learning right along with you. Thank you for sharing.

A tip from Westcote Bell Pottery.
Put your wheel next to a wall and brace your elbow against the wall when centering.
    It really makes a difference

Its an option too but often there are no walls to do it on. I handle centering fine without

Don’t be embarrassed! It is important for us to know that we all have “flops” now and then! Misery loves company.

Thanks for sharing you failures and successes. I seemed to be holding my breath for the longest time especially when you got to 54 cm on your second bowl....and also found myself shouting out loud MOVE AWAY when you got to 58cm 😂😂. What a challenge!! Well done!!

Agreed absolutely. Learning and improvement happen on the brave side of willing to fail. ❤

There was me thinking I was the only one going blue around the gills, holding my breath. I'w and again xve stopped myself, most of the time when I throw, but it catches me out now

Very enjoyable -if somewhat nerve-wracking. I have seen some potters widen their bowls by starting at the top and moving down. That seems to prevent weakness happening as it grows. It may be worth trying. The initial upright shape of the second bowl was very pleasing.

Thanks. I do expand from the top on all my "small" bowls. It works fine up to about 5 kg. But for larger and wider bowls (>5 kg) it dosen 't seem to work so well

It would only be a failure if you hadn’t started it at all. This way it was a successful learning experience for you and for us. Thank you for sharing!

I saw an interview with a very experienced potter and he commented on what a difference it made using some paper clay in the mix for large bowls. Additional videos I saw indicated it also adds strength and reduces the weight. I am just starting out and have learned a lot from your videos. Thanks!

thankyou for sharing it all with us, i noticed it start to go, on 'our' side of the wheel. Ive watched most of your videos and i like that you share what can go wrong as well as all your beautifully tall pots you make. learning the good as well as the not so good it shows your not invincible, that mistakes do happen, you teach us the why it happened and what we can do to succeed. just showing the good bits, we dont learn so fast, just please keep doing what you do, its really humbling xx

I think every potter has those happen once in a while. It's normal. Flops are prevalent for me especially when working with porcelain! But it's ok, I learn and move on to the next piece. Both of your bowls were beautiful. I can't wait to see the second one once it's glazed.

Once again a great video showing the struggles with clay. The flared trumpet shape form is particularly tricky as the weight at the top of the bowl is not being supported by the usual curved bowl wall.
Success is about failing better .
We never get to reach the creative horizon - it would be very boring if we did!

If you push the wall straight up and then out it will be strong enough to hold
