One day I was at the dentist and noticed the drill being used for my drilling was vibrating my tooth at the exact right frequency to make me hear the Star Spangled Banner through my own bones
Damn. Should've just gone the Bass VI string set route (if you were serious that is!) Ibanez and other manufacturers also make Bass VI instruments, but under different names as I believe Fender owns the copyright to the name.

He actually did that already in th-cam.com/video/AktyKyv2fuk/w-d-xo.html (albeit on an acoustic)
Serpent's Bane, Bass VI strings tune the same as a guitar but one full octave down. Said too Much put regular bass strings on it for a true full-bass tuning that goes down to a low B.
Next video suggestion: I've created an experimental new tuning (although I have yet to actually try it out myself) that I call Open-Drop G. From low to high string, the tuning is as follows: G1, D2, G2, B3, D4, F#4 ... It is basically an Open G chord with the low strings down an octave to provide depth and heaviness and the high strings tuned really high for shimmering chord work and searing leads. On a side note, I have a short scale First Act ME3061 guitar with a set of 10's set up for a G2, D3, G3, B3, D4, F#4 version of this tuning and it sounds killer! It sounds great for Power Metal, 80's Heavy Metal & Black Metal. Death Metal also works but I'd rather not go higher F Standard or Drop E2 for that! (I use exclusively A = 428 Hz tuning, which alleviates some of the tension. An E2 note at 428 Hz is about halfway between a 440 Hz E2 & Eb/D#2)
I just had an idea for a guitar variant called the 'diatar': 1. It would have 7 strings instead of 6; all strings would be the same gauge, metal type and wound/unwound status, etc. (identical) 2. each of the strings would be tuned to the 7-note diatonic scale, i.e. string 1: A, string 2: B, string 3: C, string 4: D, string 5: E, string 6: F, string 7: G
that's a unique tuning - i have my acoustic which is Russian standard steel string flat fretboard 7 string (made in Ukraine) and it's open G [G-B-D-G-B-D-G] suggest this an octave down haha
I did this thing about a year ago. I used a cheap ebay diy telecaster kit so I didn't need to worry about the strings clearing the bridge pieces. I too unwrappedthe lowest string and while it sounded terrible acoustically it was bearable amped. It was suprisingly in tune but the tone was dull on the low end and "nosy" when played high. The ebay pickups were very weak sounding. I think I tuned mine to C#(step above a 5-string bass).
Instead of unwinding strigs, I just use Ibanez micro-bass strings with their much shorter length - easy fix. I still have to widen the nut slots, and I have to re-drill the holes on the bridge or tailpiece, and I'm done. I've already converted a Les Paul style guitar and a 335 style guitar. I have an Explorer and a Strat style guitar to go. Those Ibanez micro strings sure save a lot of time and effort.
To be honest it is pretty good sounding the only problem I see is that the low be kinda has a natural staccato sound because all the sustain is so muffled and gone I will say however i do use a short scale bass .105 on my 8 string for C1 at 28.625 inches and it sounds pretty decent so I'd totally love to see more of this
Exactly, what I thought, skip the E thick bass string, and follow, as A string (as the E string location) on down, basic top 3 strings Bass , and move originals top 3, down low notes
thank you for the video. I ended up here looking for some guidance in trying a straight Open G on guitar but with the D2 on string 6 switched out for a G1 to get a two string octave drone in the low end. tuning is: G1, G2, D3, G3, B3, D4. My setup is one man: bass kick, foot tamborine, guitar & voice or harmonica. Need an amp + cab that don't peeter out below 80 Hz. Suppose the trick is figuring out what string would work in that place both mechanically and acoustically. I was starting down the path of thinking I might need to put a bass string tuner on the guitar. Maybe if the concept has legs that might be a longer term solution down the road. Good to know I don't need to modify the guitar prematurely for a quick evaluation. Thank you again for the video, it was helpful.
Love these experiments. Not easy with short scale neck those bass strings..defo needs custom job and play around with different humbucker to get better tone. Might be alright then 👍
You asked about the intonation. It's perfect. I have four guitars to convert, a Strat style, a Les Paul style, an Explorer style and a 335 style. The LP and the 335 are done, but I'm setting the other two aside to work on my 10- to-15 string monster and a 10-to24-string bigger monster. Paul's Godzilla will no longer be the only one of its kind.
Something else, this is a good way for a pre guitar player who wants to take up base to get used to the bigger strings before getting a bass. Just a thought.
Came here after wondering how possible it would be to use a bass string on the low e string of a guitar and play bass and lead finger picking at the same time.
Joe Cocchi from Within the Ruins tunes to an octave down Drop C on a regular guitar scale length (he's using Caparisons now which are 25.5"), and his lowest string is a 110 gauge string. It must be troublesome putting straight up bass strings on a guitar like that.
I know I'm 2 years late, but, I was wondering (and I searched to find out) if you changed the pickups to accommodate Bass instead of guitar, which appear to be different. I'm not a musician, but I would like to be. I thought this experiment was useful and instructional. Thanks for doing it and posting.
I hate to ask, because you did a fantastic video covering a good AB comparison, but did you re intonate at the bridge when you put the bass strings on the guitar? Sometimes you can't adjust much further, but I figured I'd ask because it honestly doesn't sound too bad!
I went as far back as I could, but because the strings were so thick it stops at the string through hole with a gap between the saddle and back of the bridge plate still being there
so is this safe for the guitar? my dad says that using bass strings can break the guitar: asking because i broke a 56 gauge string and i have a spare 65 gauge d string for bass lying around
Nothing will happen to the guitar, but that 65 will sound kinda dull. Guitar strings and bass strings have different cores which give a diff tone. When I was like 15 I did stuff like this all the time to tune down to like F# on my 6 string. It works, but it’s better if you have a 65 gauge guitar string.
i'm an old school street rock bass player and a 4-string purist. i've never played a 5 or 6-string bass wut? really? too soon? something i said? lol anyway like i was saying - never played a 6-string bass, and i'm... OK with it. 6 bass strings strung sequentially across a 6-string's saddles? certainly we'll see about that. hold my beer
I’d play it, fuck😂 I’m a fan of thicker strings for guitar, mainly due to the feel of them and the bell like tone that you get with downtuned thicker strings. The distortion sound he used here isn’t the best for downtuned thick strings, but I got the gist of the video!
Like sures its a wacky idea. But I've read stories about the wacky idea they Eddie van Halen tried. And read a story about dimenag letting a guitar warp in the Texas sun just to see what it would sound like. Guys have laid down everyone tracks on one string, totally changed the entire tuning of their guitar, played with hammers and everything else And one day many many moons ago some crazy dude named something silly like les Paul, came up with some really crazy guitar ideas. My point is. This kinda silly*let's see what happens" fiddling around is kinda the whole history of music. And it's awesome to see
no, Loathe use Bass VIs, which are technically bass guitars but 30" and tuned to EADGBe an octave down. then they tune up to EAEADF# and sometimes drop that lowest string to C# or B
Hi Kevin. Great video! My son wants to send you a request. Below his comment: maybe you should make a video called ''I put tiple strings on my 12 string guitar'' a tiple is a colombian instrument that was used in most of the songs in "Encanto" (latest Disney movie).
it'd be better to instead of using a pack of bass string for a 6 string bass to instead use a 70 for your lowest string and increment down from there instead of just using a normal set of say for example 105-50. Obviously this idea would not be to replicate a bass guitar sound on an electric guitar, but to instead idk get an experimental low end heavy thicker guitar sound.
I will forever fear the day you figure out that everything that vibrates has a frequency

Sounds good with djent target and when using harmonics. I started playing uke bass recently and that has been huge in expanding my thinking about bass
How come?
D'Addarrio makes a Bass VI string set that's 84-24, E to e. Gonna put them on my SG Tuesday and report back with how they do!
Here's my results! Super happy with how it turned out!

There are baritone strings which might double as bass strings.
The only way that this will work is to put 6 36 gauge strings on an electric guitar.

Cut it and unwind the string so you can fit the core through the tuning peg.
