I have had 2 Sagitta 600's (and now have a third). The stabilizer is always the issue with tails like these. On my first Sagitta the tail was very wobbly from drilling the hard block with a hand drill and not being very careful. The second one I drilled out the hard block with a drill press which came out much better. Still the brass tubing and piano wire arrangement left a lot to be desired. Even after roughening the surface of the brass tube and epoxying it into place which eventually worked loose. This time around, I am going to try a carbon fiber tube and rod arrangement, I am hoping the carbon fiber tube will hold better to the hard block. I built all of mine without spoilers mostly because I did not have a 4 channel at the time, but also once you got used to the speed range it was very easy to handle and land.

John my gut feeling is fix the stabiliser. It is such a beautiful plane that just wants to fly. It would be sad to crash or loose it for want of a little a TLC. Might make a good restoration video! All the best Allen

I would second the suggestion for a restoration video. I have a similar problem on one of my acquired gliders and would really like to see an experienced builder (John) solve this issue. Despite the wobble, I never noticed any issues when flying so I have left it alone. I am sure John’s solution would be simple yet very effective to stop the wobble. The two halves of the stabilizer can separate so I installed two very small elastics through the rudder to keep the stabilizer halves together.

John , I have a Sagitta 600 ,and a Sagitta 900 that grew to about 1200 by extending the wing to 3.1 metres span . I built these models about 25 years ago and flew them regularly for a number of years . Both were a delight to fly and placed well in thermal comps . Now however , they live in my shed and are not likely to fly again under my control . I'll probably give them to someone who appreciates pre-carbon epoxy machine made projectiles , if I can find the like .

With the back end all tightened up, this is a great thermal-duration flier, although I'd prefer to change to a 7037 or a 3021 - just a little thinner for better penetration without having to drop in a lb of lead ...... I've flown a couple in competition and the Sagitta gives a good account of itself ...... :-) warmed my heart to see one on your slope ....

Makes me miss my smaller Sagitta 600 I built and flew in the early 90s when in my early teens. I still have a scar on my hand from a moment of bad judgment while carving the nose piece. Plunged a #11 X-Acto blade handle-deep into the meat between my thumb and forefinger. That aside, she turned out to be very beautiful. For the conditions at my field I preferred the flight characteristics of my Spirit 2m although it wasn’t the sleek beauty my Sagitta was. Good times

    John
The wobbly stab was common on the Sagittas in the mid-'80s, some guys would put a 1/4" strip of balsa down both sides of the vertical fin to move the stabs out to eliminate the wobble, some made the brass tube pivot extend out into the stab and just built the stabs with the brass tubes in the stab moved outboard some. During the late '80s when the guys really started launching hard you could get rudder flutter so some got rid of the rudder counterbalance and just had a straight rudder hinge line.
I had one, but I thought it wasn't great. The wing was too flat, putting another 1 1/2" of poly in the tips really made it turn better. The fuse was so small it made installing servos in it very tight, and the rear fuse was weak. I flew thermal contest so I tested dead air times, (5am, no wind), I consistently got 3 minutes 30 second times, with my Windsong I consistently got 5 minutes 20 seconds. The spoilers as designed were to far inboard, blanking the stab, and to far forward making the plane pitch down when deployed.
I really like your videos, it would be nice if you included your flight evaluation of the plane at the end of the videos.
    Rich

Definitely worth some TLC - it is still a good flier! My first reaction would be to put struts in, which would stiffen it up nicely. After a while, a conventional tailplane, beefed up and with large elevators. Many thanks as always!

@@leifvejby8023 Thanks for that info! I understand that compared to conventional tailplanes, with hinges that spread the load right across the stabiliser, an all-moving one will have forces concentrated over a small area. I'm interested to know what fixes were tried. For example, was the fin too thin and later thickened up? Or just more grp/epoxy reinforcement? I would still be happier going over to a conventional tailplane and elevator - the forces on the servo and pushrod would otherwise be a worry IMHO.

A sailplane is an exercise in efficiency. A full-flying stabilizer is more efficient than a separate elevator.
The problem is most commonly caused by a loose fit of the rod and tube.
Coat that area of the rod with solder and file or sand it down to a better fitment.
The Sagitta was designed as a multi-task, competition sailplane, speed, distance, and duration. But for sport flying, a conventional tail will work just fine.

The Sagitta 900 kit came with 2 differing airfoils: one a Selig undercambered: the other is a flat bottom (Clark Y like) I'm pretty sure that yours has the Clark Y like airfoil because it handled the wind pretty well either that or the monocote voided the bottom undercamber. BION the flat bottomed Clark Y is far superior to the Selig airfoil on this glider: If that's what you've got Definitely refurbish it and put some ailerons on her too! If the airfoil is the flat bottomed Clark Y (like) I'm very envious! Robert

The hobby has all but gone out. My opinion is everything got over priced so it started going down hill and the clubs and the main hobby association have jacked up their fees. Now the Feds are changing everything making it Restrictive on altitude, unless you belong to a club that may get special permission. Gliders are meant to fly high and clash with powered aircraft because of slower speeds again that’s just my opinion.

Need your help, sir. I began building and flying 2 channel rc gliders in the mid 1970's. I've been searching on the internet for a glider I remember from that time. It was fairly distinctive. It may have had a fiberglass fuselage. I remember it only being available factory pre-built. The glider came in a foam box that was cut-out in such a way as to protect the curvature of each wing half. It was advertised in RC Modeler Magazine, and probably elsewhere also. The reason for this was because it did not have a polyhedral wing. Instead, the wing had a very graceful upward curve starting at about 65% out from the wing root. For the life of me I cannot remember the name or manufacturer. I am hoping you can help me. It may have been a high wing held on by rubber bands. But I suspect it probably had 2 wing halves that slid onto 2 metal rods fixed to the fuselage. The EZ Flight Radian and others now have curves wing surfaces, but 45 years ago this was not terribly common. this glider was not 2 meter as I remember it. It was 100" or more in wing span. My email is: john.vandusen@verizon.net. I have watched and enjoyed a number of your TH-cam videos. You seem to have close access to a reliable slope soaring location.
