  • I found this unusual Yale padlock in an antique shop in Elkton, Virginia. The weird thick shackle caught my attention and when I turned it over I found it was a former railroad lock.

I didn't hear "graphite", I heard "WD40!!!" and that's what I ultimately used. LOTS of it. Like half a can. 😀 But only because it pisses you off, not because the lock needed it.

I work on the railroad. The shackle is so big because they provide positive protection keeping switches and derail keepers from allowing them to be operated. The locking mechanisms are often heavy steel and if the shackle is not fat enough the bars can slide by them. We now have better castings so normal shackles will work but there are many out there that we have to use S&G locks on because of it. The new American locks we have been getting have the same appearance to this shackle. It is all price based. S&G 90 bucks a lock vs American $15.

Got an older Yale and Towne one with a similar body, but a bronze swing shackle. Made a key for it using a Ford car blank and a file, after drilling it open. I like it, even if it is not a useful lock, just that it was locked on an old building decades before, and was nearly demolished with it. I cut the rusty barrel bolt it was on instead of the lock.

I've been "practicing" (failing) on the upgrade Southern Railroad lock that replaced this. The hasp is of similar thickness, but the lock body is significantly larger.
Your friend would recognize this as an expensive collectable, and you are quite magnanimous to give it to him.
I picked this hobby up from the influence of you and lockpickinglawyer. It's far less expensive than cars. My tensioners are way too fat for the lock in question. Do you have a suggestion for a novice who isn't in the price range of professionals?
