    So it's like the tape is being extended to remove tension from the main reels to let it keep playing freely, and a head on a track moved back and forth over the extended portion of the tape allows for scratching back and forth over a few seconds' portion of the tape without disrupting normal playback? And it looks like the head-on-track would normally need something on the other side of the tape to both hold it in place as well as apply light pressure for the extended tape, but for now you simply can hold it to get the effect? This is shaping up to be incredible if that's what's going on!

      Oh, here's a question, would having a "tank track" style set of wheels along the extended tape be useful? To keep it rolling all along the extended tape while applying pressure? Or would that just create unnecessary tension against wherever the head-on-a-track was? Maybe just the single wheel at the end like in this video is better, but that there would just need to be a static "wall" / housing for the extended tape to keep it contained. I keep wondering if a "wall" to contain the tape would re-introduce the tension that the extension mechanism helps alleviate in the first place. Hmm! I'm sure you have it figured out though haha

      Ok 1 more random and incomplete brainstorm thought: If there was a second pulley wheel thing, so that one pulley guided and extended the tape out of the cassette (like in this video), and the other one took the tape in the other direction to create sort of a "counter-tension", and one of those two pulley wheels was mechanically informed (or software informed) to "stop" or "spin in reverse" whenever the user was "scratching backwards on the tape" (moving the playhead-on-a-track against the flow of tape in the "scratching housing"), would that enable the system to temporarily allow "scratching the slack" with even more freedom, or for longer, or with less tension on the actual playback, etc.? It essentially becomes an "analog tape buffer", well actually that's what is happening already in this video, but this scenario could help it become a longer / safer / more flexible analog buffer, unless I've got something wrong with how it would work. Like I said, it is an incomplete thought, but just wanted to share in case it leads to useful iteration

      @@connorsol Thanks very much for your many useful ideas ✨. When I designed this prototype on 3D software, I never pay attention to the tension of the tape. And in reality, when the tape deck stops, both reels became free and there was no tension on the tape. So, I have to cheat with my hand to give it a pressure 😁.
      I think using one way clutch for keeping tension on the tape might be good idea. Thanks!

      @@SnapBeat.official I had to look up what that was, a "sprag clutch" right? Sounds like that could save the need for 2 wheels which means less failure points!

    Ah yes, moving the head. I've seen this idea applied in different builds, but those have been with the tape attached to a hard surface...or scratching the magnetic strip on old credit cards.
    There are pros and cons to this approach. On the one hand, you're not putting much stress on the tape, but on the other hand, you have to choose between pausing the tape or having it move independently of your scratching, which is not ideal if you're aiming to replicate the vinyl DJ experience. I think to really get full DJ control, you'd have to control both reels but have it move independently when you let it go. Tricky. To do that, you'd definitely need some kind of manual control between the motor and the tape reels, which itself is affected by the motor.

      maybe you could have a pedal that you hold down while DJing? then when you let go it goes back to regular playback
