That being said, I have a huge love for B-films there is that raw ambition without talent that gives them charm or in the case of this film, the fact that they managed to complete the film despite various problems threatening the creators.

I always think of the 1990 Turtles movie as the big turning point and the last "silly action movie that people actually liked". Street Fighter simply came out too late. The A market movies (like Die Hard) kinda took over and left out the B to D quality movies behind in peoples minds. Also way to many actors in the movie all at the same time. A little bit weird to remember most of Van Damme's other "fighter" movies also had many chars, but instead had them all in the end in a big "tournament" usually so it was less confusing. Im sure people would have loved that kinda of movie even if it had been with "actors" instead of "fighters" (like people still go watch "Rocky" movies, even the bad ones with kids & robots). Instead we got this odd mess of a movie. 10/10 to Raul Julia who clearly gave the role a full on Addams Family char intensity the whole way thru. Still have the imported saturn version somewhere in my collection. Got it as it probably was the cheapest game in the store at the time.

On a bittersweet note, I thinks the fact that the fact that this was Raul Julia’s last movie and he was obviously having so much fun with it despite being ill completely validates its existence. Knowing that I’m not sure I’d willingly trade it for an amazingly good Street Fighter movie.
It could have been good, even with the campy tone. TMNT was just as silly, yet it was a much better film because they had a script that was faithful to the source material and enough serious moments to balance things out. Changing Chun-Li into a reporter instead of an Interpol agent was a huge mistake, as was sidelining Ryu and Ken instead of making them the main characters. The actual fighting tournament needed to be more central to the plot too.

This was brilliant! Fun look at the whole SFTM Saga, and of course it's always also really fun to go read back on Alan Noon's writeup on the SRK forums. Also on that tangent, I wonder if you can also perhaps go see Wha Happun (or in this case, Wha Didn't happun) on another infamous digitized fighting game you surely know as TATTOO ASSASSINS?
I dunno, Capcom trying to rework Street Fighter: The Movie for a home release was a valiant effort. Look, it was another year or two before Super SFII Turbo would find its way to the Saturn and Playstation... this was the only way to scratch that itch. ("Just buy a 3DO," you say? Yeah, good luck with that.) This was a good video, though. I learned a lot about the game's production that I didn't know before.
I know this is gonna be a controversial hot take, but I think Raul Julia's M. Bison is actually better and more interesting than the actual game's version.
The only game you can beat up Van dame as Kylie Minogue is worth some coin. also you didn't mention the irony that the MK crew wanted to make a blood sport game entirely around Van dame originally.
The movie being bad can only fall on Hasbro's heads at the time as they rushed the movie production to push Street Fighter figures, of which some of the characters had already been released in the G.I Joe line. And the only actor who enjoyed their involvment was Raul Julia, whose son was a huge fan of the games and he felt he had to do justice to his role as Bison. He did this while also fighting cancer. His condition took him soon afterwards.
Say what you will about this movie. Raul Julia did a good job. Shame he's no longer with us. Also, Ming-na Wen (I probably butchered her name, so I apologize if I did) was in this? Interesting.
I actually really enjoyed this game when it was released for the PSX. I was about 11 years old and this was one of the earliest games I played on the system which I borrowed from my sisters boyfriend. I had only played new challengers before on SNES and Megadrive and seeing digitized graphics like this for the first time was a huge deal.
I think chalking up the decision to use digitized actors to "because Mortal Kombat was doing it" is shortsighted. It's the game of the movie, after all; making the character in the likeness of real people is an appropriate creative choice in this case, with MK being proof of concept. Using the literal actors instead of actual trained martial artists and rushing the whole thing too much to capture Street Fighter's style, THOSE were the true bad decisions.
Did You Know? The Bison Troopers, such as Blade and his palette swaps, and Sawada were given profiles on the Street Fighter V Character Encyclopedia, as to make them canon to the Street Fighter universe?
the first street fighter when you failed a match and you have to press "a" before the 10 second countdown ends, your character looks so beat up and defeated... it gave me the motivation to press continue and fight again!
@Budgie Cat its so bad its good for me and the strange decisions of that movie transcend it to be an incredibly funny and interesting experience. Ive seen it 12 times. Highly recommend you grab some friends and laugh together at the madness
Okay, I'll admit that Time Killers wasn't actually good. But the idea of severing limbs to restrict your opponents move list was awesome. I'd like to see a similar idea in a better game for sure.

The Street Fighter movie while not great was still decently good. A guilty pleasure easily.
I know this is gonna be a controversial hot take, but I think Raul Julia's M. Bison is actually better and more interesting than the actual game's version.
Street Fighter and Mario Bros. still hold a place in my heart. RIP Bob Hoskins, Raul Julia, and Dennis Hopper.
Fuck Mortal Kombat Annihilation though.
Street Fighter the Movie: the Game...I had no idea that was even a thing LMAO!
3rd Strike is my favourite fighting game of all time. This possible alternate reality SF III that's based on the movie keeps me up at night.
The only game you can beat up Van dame as Kylie Minogue is worth some coin. also you didn't mention the irony that the MK crew wanted to make a blood sport game entirely around Van dame originally.
I thought Ernie Reyes Sr was Akuma, not Jr.
I love this movie! I don't care how terrible it is but I grew up watching and has a place in my heart.
I’m gonna be honest the Shen Long design actually sounds pretty neat on paper
This is probably one of my favorite stories to hear because of how nutty it is.
That game still gave us Kylie Minogue dressed as Cammy and that ain't bad.
This video released on a particularly flat day for me and really improved my day, so thank you!
*Mass Effect Andromeda is practically screaming for an episode of What Happened?*
Don't worry, Andromeda is sure to be part of the eventual BioWare: Whahappun episode. If Anthem fails, they're probably done.
That intro is still one of my favorite things ever
I'm liking all the Monster Hunter music throughout the video.
I loved time killers, you could get your arm cut off and still fight.
A side effect of the digital scanning technology is that Ming-Na Wen stopped aging from that point.
For us, the day Matt McMuscles graced our sub feed was the most important day of our life, but for him, it was only Wednesday.
Huh, I didn't realize til now this is kind of a stealth pilot for the movie-focused episodes of What Happened? Nicely done!
Did You Know? The Bison Troopers, such as Blade and his palette swaps, and Sawada were given profiles on the Street Fighter V Character Encyclopedia, as to make them canon to the Street Fighter universe?
It's unfortunate that this version of Shen Long wasn't there.
@@shupasopni He actually was there once... as an April Fools joke.
the first street fighter when you failed a match and you have to press "a" before the 10 second countdown ends, your character looks so beat up and defeated... it gave me the motivation to press continue and fight again!
Honestly, I think the street fighter movie is amazing. It's a horrible adaptation. But like, it's super funny and dumb
@Budgie Cat I mean....Cats is my favorite movie so i cant really be a good judge of content i realized
@Budgie Cat its so bad its good for me and the strange decisions of that movie transcend it to be an incredibly funny and interesting experience. Ive seen it 12 times. Highly recommend you grab some friends and laugh together at the madness
This series is such an awesome way to learn about the backstories to these infamous games.
How about an episode of 'Wha Happun' on "Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric"?
The whole Ace attorney part about ‘hey this game looks like like popular one’ is still very much a thing in todays gaming landscape
Okay, I'll admit that Time Killers wasn't actually good. But the idea of severing limbs to restrict your opponents move list was awesome. I'd like to see a similar idea in a better game for sure.
You have a great series going, Matt. Happy for ya brother, wish you the best.
