Her first significant accolade came after playing the fanatical teacher in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969, which won her a best actress Oscar and BAFTA.
Her second Oscar was for California Suite in 1978 which won her best supporting actress, as well as a Golden Globe.

More recently she won a new generation of fans as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey and playing Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies.
But she later told ES Magazine: "I am deeply grateful for the work in (Harry) Potter and indeed Downton (Abbey) but it wasn't what you'd call satisfying. I didn't really feel I was acting in those things."

The Downton Abbey TV series won her a series of awards - three Emmys, a Golden Globe, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In a statement, her co-star Hugh Bonneville, who played Violet's son Lord Grantham, said: "Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent.
"She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances. My condolences to her boys and wider family."
On Instagram Dan Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley, wrote simply: "Truly one of The Greats. RIP" alongside two pictures of his former co-star.
Sir Keir Starmer posted on X that Dame Maggie was a "true national treasure whose work will be cherished for generations to come" while former prime minister Rishi Sunak described her as "an icon of the stage and screen".
Meanwhile, a message on X from BAFTA said: "Dame Maggie was a legend of British stage and screen, winning five BAFTAs as well as a BAFTA Special Award and BAFTA Fellowship during her highly acclaimed career."
Although she was a tour de force in leading roles on the West End stage, she was equally happy - even during the years of her mega-stardom - to accept supporting roles, particularly in films.

She took Maggie as her stage name because another Margaret Smith was active in the theatre. She was 18 when she first appeared on stage, in Twelfth Night.
Laurence Olivier spotted her talent, invited her to be part of his original National Theatre company and cast her as his co-star in a 1965 film adaptation of Othello.
At the National Theatre, and then at the Old Vic, she excelled in both tragedy and comedy, moving easily from Shakespeare to Noel Coward, to Restoration comedy to Ibsen.
Even in smaller roles, she could upstage the film "giants". In one film, Richard Burton described her scene-stealing as "grand larceny".

Some of her other best-known movies included: Death On The Nile, Gosford Park, and The Lady In The Van - the adaptation of Alan Bennett's memoirs.
She married fellow actor Robert Stephens in 1967, had two sons who both became actors, and divorced in 1975. The same year she married the writer Beverley Cross, who died in 1998. She was made a Dame in 1990.

"Elle n'est pas noire. C'est ce que j'ai entendu. Qu'elle est indienne." En tenant ces propos au sujet de Kamala Harris, samedi 21 septembre, dans une interview au quotidien britannique The Guardian (Nouvelle fenêtre), la chanteuse Janet Jackson a relayé une fausse information sur la candidate démocrate à la présidentielle américaine vieille de plusieurs années. "Son père est blanc. On m'a dit qu'ils ont découvert que son père était blanc", ajoute la sœur de Michael Jackson dans cet entretien.
Depuis qu'elle est vice-présidente des Etats-Unis, Kamala Harris est régulièrement la cible de théories complotistes sur son identité. Des accusations qui rappellent celles qui affirment que Barack Obama n'est pas né aux Etats-Unis, ce qui le rendrait inéligible à la Maison Blanche. A l'inverse de la France où l'approche est universaliste (Nouvelle fenêtre), les identités raciales et religieuses peuvent apparaître sans tabou aux Etats-Unis. La "race" y est un concept d'identification défini par le Bureau de recensement américain (Nouvelle fenêtre) et les résidents peuvent choisir la ou les catégories auxquelles ils s'identifient le mieux : amérindien, asiatique, noir ou afro-américain, hispanique ou latino, blanc...

Récemment, lors d'un échange à Chicago avec des journalistes afro-américains, le mercredi 31 juillet, Donald Trump a aussi remis cette rumeur sur la table, accusant sa nouvelle rivale d'être "devenue noire" par calcul politique. "Elle était indienne à fond et, tout d'un coup, elle a changé et elle est devenue une personne noire", a-t-il assuré.
Née d'un père jamaïcain et d'une mère indienne, Kamala Harris a rétorqué sur le réseau social X(Nouvelle fenêtre) que "les Américains mérit[aient] mieux que la division et le manque de respect" de l'ancien président. Donald Harris, le père de la vice-présidente, est né en Jamaïque, où la quasi-totalité de la population est noire ou métisse (98,2%), selon une estimation de la CIA (Nouvelle fenêtre). Sa mère, Shyamala Gopalan, est une Indienne tamoule née dans la ville de Madras, selon le site de sa fondation (Nouvelle fenêtre). Tous les deux ont été naturalisés Américains.
Une double origine revendiquée
"C'est une question qui est seulement posée par les racistes aux Etats-Unis", relève Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, professeure à l'université de Princeton et spécialiste des inégalités raciales aux Etats-Unis. "Kamala Harris est métisse, noire et indienne. Elle a été élevée dans les religions hindoue et chrétienne. Elle a épousé un homme de confession juive et a un foyer recomposé", détaillait la chercheuse Célia Belin auprès de franceinfo en 2021. Le clan Harris "est une famille moderne comme on en a jamais vu à la tête du pays", estimait la docteure en sciences politiques.
L'ex-sénatrice de Californie a brisé plusieurs plafonds de verre en devenant la première femme à occuper le poste de vice-présidente des Etats-Unis en 2021, et qui plus est, la première femme noire et première femme asiatique. Contrairement à ce que laisse entendre Donald Trump, elle a toujours revendiqué sa double origine en racontant la rencontre de ses parents, à l'université de Berkeley, lors de rassemblements pour la défense des droits civiques. Après leur divorce, Shyamala Gopalan a élevé ses deux filles afin qu'elles deviennent "des femmes noires fières et fortes". "Elle nous a aussi élevées pour que l'on soit fière de notre héritage indien", avait déclaré Kamala Harris, lors de la convention démocrate, en juillet 2020.
Plus jeune, elle avait aussi choisi de faire ses études à l'université d'Howard, considérée comme "la Black Harvard" de Washington. "Elle y a intégré une sororité noire, et toute sa sociabilité étudiante et professionnelle s'est faite dans ces cercles-là", rappelle Esther Cyna, maîtresse de conférences en civilisation des Etats-Unis à l'université de Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

Pourquoi Donald Trump et les adversaires de la candidate sèment-ils le doute sur l'identité de Kamala Harris ? "Il avait construit toute sa campagne sur le fait d'attaquer Joe Biden, et tout s'est effondré quand celui-ci s'est retiré de la course à la Maison Blanche. Ça l'a déstabilisé", observe Esther Cyna. "C'est une récidive à l'envers. Pour Barack Obama, il n'y avait pas de débat pour savoir s'il était noir ou pas. Alors Donald Trump l'a attaqué en demandant : 'Est-il vraiment américain ?' Pour Kamala Harris, on ne se pose pas la question, elle est américaine. Il questionne : 'Est-elle vraiment noire ?' Il attaque la légitimité de ses adversaires pour les discréditer", analyse la spécialiste des Etats-Unis.
La légitimité de la vice-présidente américaine faisait déjà débat au sein de la société américaine, bien avant que Donald Trump ne la cible. "Elle est en dehors de beaucoup de codes. Parce qu'elle est biraciale, il y a cette peur qu'elle capitalise sur une identité noire, alors que certaines personnes ne la voient pas comme une porte-parole de la communauté noire", explique Esther Cyna. Kamala Harris a notamment été critiquée pour son bilan en tant que procureure générale de Californie, jugé particulièrement dur à l'égard des minorités. Certaines associations antiracistes lui ont reproché sa passivité sur des affaires de tirs de police sur des hommes noirs.
Critiquée pour son appartenance sociale
Par ailleurs, la règle du "one drop rule", bannie en 1967, a laissé un fort héritage dans la société américaine. Il suffisait jusqu'à cette date d'une goutte de sang noir pour qu'une personne soit considérée comme Noire - une mesure destinée à empêcher les mariages interraciaux. Aujourd'hui, si les personnes sont libres de s'auto-identifier racialement lors des recensements, un principe d'hypodescendance persiste. Il s'agit de l'assignation d'un enfant métis au groupe marginalisé d'un parent plutôt qu'au groupe privilégié de son autre parent. Autrement dit, un enfant issu d'une union entre une personne afro-américaine et une personne blanche sera considéré comme noire.
"Quand Barack Obama, en tant que président des Etats-Unis en 2010, s'auto-identifie sur le recensement comme étant uniquement noir, alors qu'il a la possibilité de dire qu'il est aussi blanc, ça indique, si ce n'est la 'one drop rule', que le principe d'hypodescendance est intériorisé y compris par le chef de l'Etat", illustre le politiste Daniel Sabbagh, spécialiste des discriminations et de l'histoire du recensement aux Etats-Unis, à France Culture (Nouvelle fenêtre). De la même façon, Kamala Harris est bien noire, au même titre que Barack Obama.
