I agree. Perhaps she didn't know what "urban" or "rural" meant, but after that, she was brilliantly going along to create what I think is an absolutely hilarious bit.
Awww I think the blondie took it quite well! They were laughing at her not knowing two words in the history of words, and she kept her composure and went along with it even though she was visibly miffed about that.
Two fairly common words that every adult who speaks English natively should know. It's not just the words though; her whole appearance gives the impression of the stereotypical blonde bimbo trophy wife, and her answers confirm it, which is funny.
Aww the funniest part of the supersperm one was just after the cut Jim bowen goes for a take 2 and the guy "says the same pissing thing again!" I also love how Jim is upset that there's no supersperm on his card...
Trish: Hello? Meredith: Hi, Trish. Trish: Hi, Marilyn. Meredith: It's Meredith. How are you? *everyone laughs* Trish: I'm nervous. I'm sorry. Meredith: It's OK. Even my husband gets it wrong. It's fine, it's fine. That's probably my favorite clip in this video.

Well, saying you would keep a pen in a zoo, isn't neccassarily a stupid answer, because apart from a writing implement, a "pen" is also an animal enclosure and a female swan.
It's just misunderstanding of the question, which was common in Family Fortunes...like 'name a way of toasting someone' and someone answers 'over a fire' (which actually won a few points!!) Or 'name a famous Arthur' and someone said 'erm...shakespeare' because they heard 'famous author' and my personal favourite..'name a type of berry' and the contestant said 'french beret'!!
I love how the host of the Newlywed Game just plays into it. She clearly has no idea what either of those words mean, yet he just lets her answer then keep going on and on with some explaination that makes no sense without correcting her or calling her out on it, lol. It's hilarious! I'm still wondering what exactly she thought Urban was, though...O_O
Gotta love how Bob Eubanks knew how to have fun with the questions asked when not answered correctly, even if it reveals a bit too much for TV back in those days... lol. Poor girl though, I'd hope she felt inspired to increase her vocab a bit more so moments like those wouldn't happen in real life. But of course, who doesn't need a good old-fashioned cure for being more city-based? That's what hiking is for... lol.
You don't get points for the answer. The goal is to match what others said, with points for those matching your answer. Fairly safe to say few of those answered with "the zoo."
Yeah cos the question was "name a place you would keep a pen." I think everyone got it, and was laughing at her intelligent alternate pov. Of course , the host panders to the lowest common IQ when trying to crack a joke...
1) First answer is probably right. 2) Zoo is probably an alternative answer where you can keep all your chicken pens, pigs pen... 3) The question wasn't asked correctly but the answers sure were funny to the MAX!
So i started watching a few to pass the time, I have know ended my journey at 4:19am and I am proud to say i watched them all, and nearly died of laughter a couple hundred times. Thank you good sir for keeping me busy
Why's everyone so butthurt about the last contender being made fun of in the Game Show? You're speaking as if she's some random woman they picked up on the street then mocked. No, she came on to a GAME SHOW where they ask QUESTIONS and ENTERTAIN PEOPLE. God, why does everything have to be such a tragedy.
+bob bill +bob bill , Because everyone these days gets offended at anything & everything. A Pussified society. It's why you can't have anything good or funny on TV anymore whether it's Gameshows, Stand-Up Comedians, etc because you have to watch what you say cause you don't know who you're going to "offend" or "upset" and it gets picked apart by people that have non-existent sense of humor's, think too much of themselves and have way too much spare time. Most of those aforementioned in present day are very cookie cutter & PC now because of it.
She was serious: she did admit at the beginning she didn't know what they meant. But when she heard people laughing at her and the host insisting, she tried to bluff her way through it so that she would not look like an idiot. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect.
Technically, considering that 'dumb' isn't a specific term, it can apply - compare to people using the word 'smart' for the opposite, even though it is just as inaccurate.
Dwight Stewart she might have known the meaning of the words, but not in that context. I myself have never heard either term applied to a person, I would always have used it in regards to an area purely. Saying that, however, I am Irish and perhaps that particular use of the terms is more an American thing, and considered common knowledge there. I do believe however that we certainly don’t have enough information to say for sure one way or the other in regards to her intelligence. It could go either way and it is unfair to make judgements based on such a short clip. I find I must disagree with you also in your conclusion that her continuing on was evidence of stupidity. She may have just decided to roll with it out of humour. Again, there is too little to go on to know for certain.
@@novidsnosubs9758 .. The two words have the same meaning here in the USA as in your Ireland (city versus country). However, it was also common at the time to talk about the urban versus rural gentleman - a suit & tie kind of guy versus a cowboy, farmer, or similar.
The second one actually wasn't a stupid answer. A pen has several definitions - one being a place where animals are kept and a zoo is a place where you keep them. Sure it sounded funny and weird at first because when you hear the word pen, the first thing you think of is the writing instrument.
You probably saw my comment on its own youtube section but the "Supersperm" guy, after being told off by Jim for not giving a family friendly answer, then repeats the exact same pissing thing on take 2! I do kinda agree. Ignorance is something to be corrected, not made fun of. Some people just haven't been exposed to certain bits of knowledge. Making fun of the ignorant causes them to pretend they know things they really don't...
FKProds Subject to the ability to access said information. Then again, that argument makes no sense. How is someone going to acquire knowledge about something they haven't even heard of in the first place?
Mikhail Kalashnikov I agree with your last post her in that you can't know something you've never heard of.. Rural and Urban are not exactly words that come up in a normal conversation let alone even during the time this took place, in fact outside of the internet, I can't think of any place where I actually heard those words being uttered by a live human, it's just something that doesn't come up in normal conversations. Which is why before I looked them up I even had a hard time defining those words, because it's not common place. I already don't have good memory as it is, trying to recall definition of words that you haven't heard in months or years is really kind of hard. I sometimes have to look up words just to refresh my memory. If someone asked me a question and used a word I hadn't heard in a long time or remembered the definition I too would have an incredibly hard time answering the question. In that instance I don't think its fair to call someone stupid, not everyone has great memory and can recall every word's definition in likely a stressful situation. There's been times where I can't even remember the word I want to use, and probably use the wrong word. Calling someone stupid should be reserved for those that can be considered actually stupid, not calling people stupid just because they aren't perfect.
This whole Urban vs. Rural is one of the reasons why Bob Eubanks was one of the best in the business, and why his version of Newlywed Game trumps the GSN remake.
