Location and Proximity Superpowers: Eddystone + Google Beacon Platform - Google I/O 2016

  • Eddystone beacons mark important places or objects in a way that your phone understands. The Google beacon platform re-writes the traditional beacon app feature flow, making the humble beacon a versatile, remotely manageable, shareable piece of context infrastructure. Starting with Beacon Tools, a new Google app for managing beacons, we’ll dig into the Proximity Beacon API and web dashboard for managing beacon infrastructure, including the added security of Eddystone Ephemeral ID. Deliver the great context awareness that users expect, through Google products, open and shared beacon networks, and your own apps.

    Great talk, very exciting technology, and the soon-to-arrive Nearby Notifications functionality looks to have huge potential.
    I'm having a quick play with this and I'm getting a bit stuck. I've set up my Nexus 6 to use Google's TxEddystone-UID APK to transmit a beacon, and I'm using Beacon Tools on my Pixel C to detect it. The Pixel C finds the beacon without issue, and I can register it, setting location and other properties as I'd expect.
    Once registered, it shows up under the Registered tab in 'Beacons Near Me', but going to 'All My Beacons', I get an error that I have no beacons registered for the current project. Similarly, the web-based Beacon Dashboard also tells me I have no beacons registered. Am I missing a step?

    register beacon return 403, permission_denied error,
    From my account I configured my Google Dev console:
    1) enabled proximity API
    2) added credentials for OAuth2.0 and Client ID. Based on the SHA1 code of my machine.

    I have been experimenting with Eddystone beacons, using two devices. Both running ( but not transmitting at the same time ) Locate .. I have set up the google console with the ID and the URL (https) ..One device, tablet, is a 5.0 Android the other is an LG G5 running Android 7x.
    Both devices when using Locate show the other devices Beacon, However the Android OS's are not picking them up nor are other devices, so no notifications what so ever.
    In the console they are public. Each is using my physical office as the location, I am miles away. We are ordering several real beacons, but I would think that the beacon simulator on either device would be the same, if not a little more powerful.
    any help or suggestions?

      Hi John -- there's the Nearby Messages API in Google Play Services, and also a cocoa pod for iOS (here: cocoapods.org/pods/NearbyMessages). Both work in the same way with the infrastructure that you deploy. HTH!

    Great talk ! Thank you !
    I want to play with these beacons, but when I launch the Beacon Tools app, I only see 'Eddystone-URL' so I can't register them to my project.
    Somebody have an idea ?
    Thanks

      I am having somewhat the same problem. I got the same beacon as the speaker. I can manage to change the Eddy URL but cannot register. I can also register the beacon in the dashboard, but I got no notifications

    • @peterlewis415
      @peterlewis415 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Humm... you'll need to provision your beacon to be broadcasting an Eddystone-UID in order to register it. (Or you can use something like Beacon Toy to turn an old phone into a beacon!) Remember that beacon registrations are globally unique in the registry: if you try to register a beacon with the same ID as someone else, it won't work.
      Once you've got your beacon registered, try adding a simple URL attachment (like I did in the video). Remember to use HTTPS (not HTTP). If it still doesn't show, check that your device can see the beacon (i.e. it shows up in beacon tools), or try launching nearby manually (settings > Google > nearby discoveries IIRC). It may be that you've dismissed a Nearby Notification in the past, and it's backing off showing you more.

      I have been using Beacon Simulator app on playstore to turn my phone into a beacon.
      But I am not able to provision it using beacon tools.Will Beacon Toy allow me to provision the simulated beacon.
      Also can you please suggest how to add App Intent URL as a nearby notification attachment

    what are the minimum requirements of android version for this nearby notifications ? Or it is just a google play services update that all ble devices can have ?

    • @peterlewis415
      @peterlewis415 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +nycbmw89 Jelly Bean MR2 and above can use Nearby Notifications, and yes, it'll come through Google Play Services!
      If you want a notification when the feature is live on your device, you can actually create a Nearby Notification right now.
      1. Register a beacon using beacon tools to one of your developer console projects
      2. Visit the dashboard (follow the links from g.co/beacons)
      3. For the beacon you just registered, select Nearby Notifications (just like I do in the demo at 27' in) and link to g.co/beacons (the httpS is important!)
      4. Wait for Google Play Services to update on your phone, and when you come near that beacon you'll get a notification linking you to our docs as a handy reminder!
