    The Royal horse Artillery regiment was my grandad's Regiment. He also fought at the battle of the somme. He was gased quite badly. He would not leave his horse's. He would sleep at their feet to Help keep them safe and calm . The stories that our dad would tell us. When the war was over. When my grandad came home. Before he went up the stairs in the close where he lived was in Plantation Street. In Kinning park here in GLASGOW. It was known as Plantation. He stripped off his old uniform as it was covered in lice and fleas. There was an old white concrete sink in the back of the close. He got scrubbed as best he could and changed into a better cleaner uniform to see his parents.

    Amazing. I didn't know that artillery horses were ever used for this purpose. You can tell it's not their regular gig, but they are doing a great job anyway. I'll have to try to find the background of these horses. It's interesting how they are the beautiful bay and broad through the chest for strength to pull the canon, etc. Whereas most of the cavalry horses are black or dark brown and taller. Anyway, hopefully the artillery soldiers are enjoying this (seemingly) rare duty.

    • @phoebus007
      @phoebus007 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good observations. The cavalry and artillery horses are all Irish Draught but, with the exception of the chargers for the officers and SNCOs, the King's Troop horses are shorter by about one hand, the shortest pair being harnessed closest to the gun carriage itself. The Household Cavalry select black horses by and large, but those of The Troop range from light bay to black, a team of the latter being used to tow the gun carriage at funerals.
      I, too, noticed the more lively interaction of the horses with the public. It will be quite a novelty for them compared to their usual duties and, for some at least, the first time they will have stood guard. It will be interesting to see if they change over the next 2 - 3 weeks. I'm sure the cavalry horses will return refreshed from their holidays at the seaside. Arnie will be back!

    • @John-G
      @John-G ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phoebus007Simply not correct - King's Troop horses are not "shorter by about one hand", as I've explained elsewhere - at least twice. The lead two horses in each gun team are the same size as the largest H Cav horses, but as these are ridden by NCOs they're not on sentry duty as that's only done by ptes / troopers / gunners so they'll only be seen at the daily ride in / out. Much the same for the centre pair although only some are ridden by JNCOs, while the rear pair, the wheelers, are the shortest and as they're always ridden by ptes / gunners they make up the majority of those doing sentry duty.
      ... and FWIW few SNCOs in King's Troop ride "chargers".

    @ronaldmartin7892 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I did my National Service in 1952 in 2 RHA and never rode a horse. The officers rode horses for pleasure. We rode Tanks and Self Propelled Guns. Looking at the videos, the Guards horses and riders are bigger than the RHA horses and riders and more suited to guard duty. The RHA horses are smaller and I expect more nimble, for positioning the ceremonial guns. Maybe that's why they are fidgety.

    • @John-G
      @John-G ปีที่แล้ว

      They're fidgety because they're standing still. 0nly the centre and rear pairs in each team are progressively slightly smaller as it helps when turning, but as these are the horses predominantly ridden by gunners / ptes so doing most of the sentry duties they all look smaller.

      They're the same breed and the same range of height - around 16 hands, from 15.2 to 16.2 or 3, but there are more smaller horses as those in each gun team are different sizes: the lead two are 16 - 16.2, the centres are 15.3 -16, and the rear two, the 'wheelers', are 15.2 to 15.3. The sizing helps for some of the displays and ceremonials.

      @daylehudson6810 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. A lot smaller

    • @John-G
      @John-G ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daylehudson6810 The range of height is still the same, within two or three inches either way of 16 hands, but there are simply more at the shorter end on sentry duty. In H Cav they're allocated arbitrarily regardless of rank so you get a representative mix. In King's Tp their height dictates their position in the gun team: lead, centre or wheeler. Lead horses are ridden by NCO's so they don't do sentry duty, while centre and wheelers are ridden by gunners (pte's) who do. If you see the ride to guard mount, especially if it's a Long Guard, you'll get the same spread of height, but those on sentry will be the centre and wheeler horses / soldiers.
