Just rented one of these for a 1400+ km tour thru back roads of Italy. I LOVED IT. Every bit of it. So much that i'm seriously considering of selling my VFR and buying one. Even preferred it over a 797 Monster that i rode for half the day to compare too.
Owned 2015 F800R for a year. Pros: Torque, Brakes, Suspension, hi end speed (good aero), tyre pressure monitor, heated grips, weight, LED headlight superb. Cons: Hi frequency handlebar buzz at 80mph + (reluctantly had to sell the bike because of this, did try to fix), Engine / Exhaust note. (a 3rd party slip on sorted this). If it wasn’t for the buzzing bars I’d still own this bike. Underrated. Now on a Duke 790, brakes & suspension not as good as F800R. Not as quick high speed cos of non existent aero. Engine and exhaust note of Duke sound good. No hi frequency bar buzz on 790.
Im currently doing my license on this bike and I like it. Well as a beginner I dont have much knwoledge about good or bad bikes, but it pulls well and is quite manouverable.
I've owned a 2010 F800R Chris Pfeiffer Edition and currently own a 2014 F800R. As a part time tester for our local Spanish magazine Revista Motos I've had the opportunity to try the 2015 F800R with all the bells and whistles for next month's issue. The bike was already pretty much perfect for mainly commuting plus some weekend fun use. The 2015 model has a better riding position due to the new, flatter handle bar however, I feel the footpegs are now too low (I brushed my boot a few times during the week I had the bike). For some weird reason it seems that it's also lost some mid-range power however that may just be due to the revised gearing. The new look is way too generic and yes, that small bikini fairing the older models had offers more protection from windblast at higher speeds. I still think it's a cracking bike, the 2015 model offered the same 4.7liter/100km fuel consumption for everyday usage as the older models and it's simply very well put together. I do miss the Akrapovic silencer that my Chris Pfeiffer had as stock, made a wonderful sound.
It sounds this way because the ignition spacing is identical to a BMW boxer engine. Put a different exhaust on it and the sound is nothing like a wooden box.
Very balanced review, these are underrated machines, typical BMW - really ugly, sounds awful, but otherwise superb. The F800r is very good value for money, and build quality is second to none. So glad I got the Blue /Black 2016 model as the 2017 colours are hideous. This machine has impeccable handling, good useful power delivery, and excellent quality features.
Just bought 1.. a mint 2016 with 3k miles fully loaded ex demo bike.... Been riding over 20 years and without doubt the best bike I've ever ridden I absolutely love it the build quality is sublime.... I just can't wait to ride it every day 👍
I own previous one 2014 as my first bike. After two seasons i am sure it is the best bike available on the market for the beginners. It is smooth, easy to handle, safe, rather comfortable. As it is naked, the rider feels speed quite well. I gave him a nikname Fiodor. My next one will be s1000r. BMW rocks!

Perfectly well said in just 4 minutes!! Great review. Although there is something to be said about the price. Can you justify the price with the name? In this case I would think so. Ask yourself, has BMW ever really made "bad" bikes? If you look at the picture as a whole and considering how long they have been making bikes then my answer would be no. They have always made great quality bikes in my opinion. MT-09 is a great bike but it just loves to wheelie waaay more for my taste.
Good overall review, and I looking forward to your next one, but was it necessary to mention a recall that doesn't include this model? Yamaha must love you! Cheers.
I mean… the sound isnt much. The looks Could be improved On with aftermarket parts, it doesn’t wheelie as much as I’d like but it doesn’t tire me out. 300kms regularly and i still feel pretty fresh after the ride. It’s made to be useable.
I would probably choose the Yamaha over this bike but here in the U.S. theYamaha's are not equipped with abs. No abs at this price range is a deal breaker for me.
I just test rode this bike, and I found the engine very disappointing. It felt less powerful than my SV650 [2016]. I was expecting more considering it has an extra 150cc and 15bhp.
+fish and banana You can ride every bike, if the masses between your ears work fine. The F800R is a great bike, but the price-performance isnt good. For the same Money you get with the MT09 much more. The MT09 is a very great allrounder bike. Alot, i mean alot of Power from bottom. The only Negative is the spongy ride behave. At the end all that vids and words arent worth anything, if you dont test drive em. So i would recommend you to take alot of time and testdrive the F800R; MT09 and maybe the Triumph Speed Tripple. Testdriving > all
I have this model, mine is 2016, just done over 1000 miles. Most of the time it’s smooth, and civilised. It does change it’s character between 4 and 5k revs. More power, sound, and more vibes. If you spend a lot of time at motorway speeds it can be annoying, but not too unpleasant. For me biggest issue is mirror vibration on motorway, so I can’t see that well behind. If you are mostly at lower speeds and just get vibes for few seconds while accelerating and the shift up it’s fine. I really like it, great quality, rides well. It’s no hooligan bike, and I like to ride it relaxed and in higher gear. So depends on your need and preference. Seems like most people prefer maximum power to money ratio, this is really about great suspension, brakes etc. Then again this is my first “big bike” although 90hp on 200kg is somehow low power these days.
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess why not, my first bike 30 years ago was a kawasaki gpz1000rx @ age 25, its the driver that counts, my mate @ the time had same bike but he easely could have killed himself, you have to be sensible and carefull on the road all the time.
+Lord Random Less displacement and therefore less torque. You say "Honda" like BMW builds bad motorcycles. If you mean "nicer" in terms of looks then it's totally subjective and you can only speak for yourself.
Funny how it isn't mentioned in some reviews, is there, but not really of consequence it seems for most, and lastly those that say it shakes so bad that it's a deal breaker for them. One guy here on TH-cam went so far as to say he thought it could pass for a 4 cylinder it was so smooth. Opinions are all over the map. I don't know what to think anymore.
savagemako17 I've been reading every review I've come across since this engine was introduced many years ago, and there's no question that as the revs rise the engine vibes more and more, and becomes an issue on highway speeds. If the would but a new, smoother engine in this bike I'd want one.
+Motorcycle Extremist Among twin engines this one has the least vibrations. You can run 40kph in sixth gear and the engine won't complain. In the higher revs, yes, but if you want an engine to constantly push to the limits you wouldn't buy an F800R in the first place.

It depends on how speed you ride... Both are superb bikes... No worries you can choose either one... No question, both are great bikes
Why did you narrow your options to just these 2?
Hate the new headlamp.

Yamaha's new triple has cam chain tensioner issues, but that's about it regarding reliability.
Supposedly that's been fixed in the latest models.
Luke Paul
Supposedly, users of the very first models are complaining that it hasn't been fixed and replacement ones are still showing problems.
