  • 7 Calories doesn't seem like that much energy - until you burn them in liquid oxygen. Now it finally makes sense why it takes so much exercise to burn calories.

It is generally used in publications and package labels to express the energy value of foods in per serving or per weight, recommended dietary caloric intake,[6][7] metabolic rates, etc. Some authors recommend the spelling Calorie and the symbol Cal (both with a capital C) to avoid confusion;[8] however, this convention is often ignored." I am going to tolerate the ambiguity of this statement. It is true that the energy of the masses is indeed much higher, but that energy cannot be accessed by chemical reactions, for example combustion like this one. You can easily use the energy mass equation to find out energy equivalent of the mass, equates to 9 times more energy than Hiroshima bomb, assuming the piece is 1 gram.

    For those who are still wondering the unit for energy in food is the Calorie.
    IIRC, a Calorie is defined as:
    "How much energy is required to heat a 1 cm cube of space to 1 degree C° at sea level."
    The experiment works like this:
    You have a container, (Con A). And you place Con A in a chamer that mimics atmospheric pressure at sea level. Within Con A is a 1 cm^3 cube (this notation is the same as writing out 1cm by 1cm by 1cm). The cube has a given about of food stuf (rice, chips, whatever is being tested for caloric value.)
    [ I forgot to mention that there is water within Con A abd that the Cube stants above the water on a pillar that will ignite and heat the food item. ]
    After the food item is ignited abd subsequently burned, you then messure the time it takes for the heat from that food item to raise the water within Con A to 1 degree C° above its current temp and there you have a Calorie.
    Now I must express that this is going off my memory and not from google, so im sure im misremembering somethings or mixing the order of operations.

    The original method is called bomb calorimetry. It's not a good representation of the actual amount of energy our bodies can extract from food, as our bodies are not 100% efficient. We have to account for the energy "lost" in urine and feces. Some better methods exist to address this problem. These methods are based on the concept of metabolizable energy (ME) or net metabolizable energy (NME), which are the energy values of foods after subtracting the energy lost in urine, faeces, and combustible gases.
    One method for estimating the ME or NME of foods is to use indirect calorimetry, which measures the oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production of a person or an animal after eating a food. This method can calculate the heat produced by the body, and the respiratory quotient, which indicates the type of fuel being oxidized. By using these data, along with the nitrogen excretion in urine, the ME or NME of the food can be estimated.
    Another method for estimating the ME or NME of foods is to use empirical factors derived from experiments on humans or animals. These factors are based on the average digestibility and metabolic efficiency of different types of foods, and are applied to the gross energy values obtained from bomb calorimetry. For example, the FAO recommends using the following factors for calculating the ME of foods:
    - Carbohydrate: 3.75 kcal/g
    - Protein: 4.0 kcal/g
    - Fat: 8.8 kcal/g
    - Alcohol: 6.3 kcal/g
    - Polyols: 2.4 kcal/g
    - Organic acids: 3.0 kcal/g

      1 calorie is the amount of energy it takes to heat up 1ml of water by 1 degree celsius. the "calories" you see on the back of food containers is actually in kilocalories. so 3 chips ahoy cookies, for example are actually 160 KILOcalories, or 160,000 calories. we stopped saying the kilo part for some reason and the distinction between calories and kilocalories are really only for chemistry and physics discussions now. 99% of the time you hear "calorie", its about food calories. its so confusing for no reason.

    FOUL! That's 7000 calories, or about 29.5 btu. That's roughly equivalent to about 30 or 40 match heads (matchheads have their own oxidizer). 30 btu is actually quite a lot of power, when spent over less than a minute. No wonder it burns hot. But using LOX is still _cheating_! All that does is speed up the combustion process. No less, no more energy than in the dry noodle when completely incinerated.

    Keep in mind that alot of food that is plant based contains cellulose (chains of sugars) which we can't digest, so even if the item had "zero calories", as long as it had cellulose (such as plant fiber), it would still burn and give off lots of heat and energy. An example of this would be cotton or wood, which we do not eat since we can't get any energy (calories) from them, yet they still burn obviously.

  • @galliumgames3962
    @galliumgames3962 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That’s about 30kJ of energy and humans run at around 100W, so that’s 5 minutes of energy for a human. However, that fire burned at a higher wattage in a much smaller volume, hence being like 1500°C vs humans at 38°C

    For those wondering what the actual answer to what "how much energy is 7 calories," it is equivalent of turning on a 10w LED bulb for just under 3 seconds.
    1 cal = 4.184 joules
    7 cal = 29.288 joules
    E(J) = P(W) × t(s)
    29.288j = 10w x 2.9288s

    1 calorie = to 1000 Calories
    When, in the USA, we have a recommended average daily intake of 2000 Calories, that is actually 2 000 000 calories.
