    I bought a router bit set for making curved edge joints from ENT for a big upcoming project.
    I wanted to test the set before I use it on my project because raw materials for that are quite expensive. I discovered a few mistakes that I made the first time using it and now know how to prevent them.
    If you're interested in that set: www.ent-werkze...
    Link to the written instructions from ENT: www.ent-werkze...
    Enjoy the video!

    Here is a tip that works for me with templates, I coat the edges of the template with a 50/50 mix of wood glue and water (sizing). I do a few coats and sand with 320. This leaves a smooth hard surface for the bearing to register against.
    As always, a joy to watch you craft.
    Cheers

    I appreciate this is years later but I’ve only just seen it. That set from ENT looks great but is now £130 plus carriage. I achieve the same result by using a 10mm pattern bit and then a 30mm OD guide bush with a 10mm straight cutting bit. That all means that, as you say much better than me, you are cutting the brother template 10mm too thin but adding that 10mm back with the guide bush/straight cutter. I only had to buy a guide bush - but it was for Festool and so was £20.
    The results I get are varied - but failures are just my error usually maintaining that vital contact when making the brother template. I do use 6mm MRMDF which is okay although I would prefer 9 or 10mm

    That is very interesting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have started doing something similar. I make a template from MDF. I use a pattern bit to cut a 1/4” out of the wood. Then I cut strips of a different color so that strips add up to the thickness of the wood that I removed. One of the best tips I got was put so CA glue on the edge of the MDF template so it will hold up better. The edge of the MDF just doesn’t hold up very well and the CA glue hardens it up very nice. Anyway, thank you for sharing. I really enjoy your work.

    That is a clear demonstraton of a useful technique. Use of a bearing with the same offset as the diameter of the first bit is clever, letting you use a regular flush-trim bit with the one of the templates. If it were critical that the curve of the join exactly match the curve of the mother template, you would need to change the procedure a little. To do that you could cut along each the brother and the sister templates with a bit that had a bearing offset of half the diameter of the first bit.

  • @EvanDunville

    I agree with your assessment of those router cases. I think most manufacturers expect their coustomers will most likely put their bits in a shop made storage solution.

    Marius, you are one of the best woodworkers I have ever seen. When I was a boy my dad taught me a wallpapering trick the will accomplish what you want much easier. Just overlap the two pieces of material that you want to join by a few inches. support the gap below the upper piece with a piece of scrap of correct thickness. Then cut through both pieces at the same time using a jigsaw, bandsaw or a router with a 1/4” carbide bit along your desired curved line. The remaining pieces will fit together perfectly!

    • @awkwardRob
      @awkwardRob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you did this you'd end up with the same slight mismatch as the brother and sister templates due to the kerf of the blade/diameter of the router bit though.

      Bandsaw jigsaw router finish too rough for a one pass shot at it.
      These tools allow removal of bulk and trim off a little bit. Much easier on the tool.
      Excellent for wallpaper as stated.

    As always, awesome video. I'm a router novice and find these advanced techniques fascinating. I first learned of this method a few months ago on Stumpy Nubs. Since then, I've been thinking about it and am pretty sure that this same thing could be done with a straight bit and a guide bushing set. One of these days I'll make it down to my shop to test out my budget idea. In the meantime, if someone more skilled than me would like to give it a try, I'd love to hear of it worked!

    • @benblackwell44
      @benblackwell44 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have used guide bushings to construct curved joints. I learned the technique in a Router Joinery class at Santa Fe Community College. Since I know guide bushings do work for curved joinery, I am searching for information on why it works and what is the relationship between the various guide bushing OD and bit OD. Where on Stumpy Nubs did you find information on curved joinery?

Grabbed an 1/8" upcut by the tiny part of the shank sticking out from the container base... fingers slipped and the bit filleted my finger. Had to use needle nose pliers and some leverage to get the bit out when I got back from getting 4 stitches.

You probably should make your own storage solution for your needs and space the bits are much easier than having to scribe. A radius which can get very tricky ive seen many guys do it. Wrong and remove too much product making. The whole project a bust ? Those bits would be very valueable to boat building and repair i would think

    Could you just re-do the sister template using the big bearing so there wasn't a chance of forgetting which bit to use on the final workpiece?

  • @dasstackenblochen9250
    @dasstackenblochen9250 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think if you put a strip (e.g. for contrast) in the joint you can actually compensate for any remaining size difference between the flush trim bit and the guide-bushing/bit difference.
    Hypothetical numbers: 20 mm guide bushing, 12 mm bit = 8 mm difference. Use 6 mm flush trim bit to cut the two templates, and then gluing a 2 mm strip into the joint should split the difference?

    • @dasstackenblochen9250
      @dasstackenblochen9250 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. No. I don't think that works. The flush trim bit cuts different radii on brother/sister templates. That's what needs compensation when routing along the brother template. Adding a strip doesn't change the radii back. So, no, this doesn't work. But you can of course add a strip into a well-fitting joint. May be interesting.

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think that could work, only your hypothetical numbers were wrong. 20mm guide bushing + 12mm bit is an only 4mm difference (on each side). If you bend thin strip it will have different radii outside and inside creating again an offset of the wood thickness. So fitting a thin strip in a well-fitting joint won't work in my opinion(except that enough clamps could force it together to a certain amount)

    • @dasstackenblochen9250
      @dasstackenblochen9250 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, your argument makes sense and I also tried it with a compass on paper and then it becomes nice and obvious :)

    great teaching video, thank you. What was the third bit for? Was it an edge trimmer for cleaning up? What are you studying at university I'm guessing engineering in some form that lets you get your hands on?

      No, I used all three bits. Small bit for making templates, offset bit for the brother template and the normal flush trim bit for the sister template

    Pro tip: forget double sided tape. Use the masking tape super glue trick instead.
