  • Conservative students are vastly outnumbered on campus, and their beliefs and values are often ridiculed by other students, professors and administrators. So, how can conservatives survive and thrive in college, while also making a difference? Matthew Woessner, a political science professor at Penn State Harrisburg, offers some tips.

    Script:
    As a professor at a major American university, I’m well aware of higher education’s liberal bias. I also know the unique challenges that college students with conservative views face. If you are one of those students, here are seven ways you can turn those challenges into opportunities for learning and growth.
    1) Face Reality
    The reality is that at most colleges and universities the Leftist worldview is the norm. Everything else is considered a deviation. This is certainly the case in the humanities and social sciences. Even the hard sciences and professional majors, like business, have been influenced -- although, thus far at least, to a much lesser degree. Simply being aware of this ideological imbalance is a big step forward. It will help you think critically about what you’re being taught.
    2) Seek Out Allies
    The easiest way to do this is to identify the non-Left and conservative groups and clubs on campus and to join some of them. We all need allies. And we all need friends with whom we can talk freely. Plus, fellow independent-thinking students can give you advice on how to navigate the Politically Correct obstacle course that runs through almost all college campuses -- and where to find the few non-Leftist faculty. (They do exist!)
    3) Avoid pointless ideological battles
    It’s not your personal responsibility to correct the Leftist bias that permeates higher education. You’re not going to turn around the professor who has no patience for your conservative views, so don’t try. It’s fine to pose probing questions, but don’t push too hard. The same goes for your fellow students who espouse Leftist views -- probe, but don’t push too hard.
    Also, recognize that many left-leaning faculty are committed to an open discussion of controversial topics. Conflicts with closed-minded professors will happen less often than you might imagine.
    4) Stay cool
    If you do mix it up with a Leftist professor or fellow student always be calm, reasonable, and respectful, even if they don't return the favor. Think of yourself as an ambassador for conservative ideas. Coming off as a hothead isn’t going to help the cause. It’s not easy to control your temper, especially when you are being falsely accused of being sexist, intolerant, xenophobic, bigoted or racist, but that’s what you have to do.
    Your opponents will look for any excuse to dismiss you as a crazy conservative. So don’t give them the chance. Remember this: the person who loses his cool often loses the debate.
    5) Choose wisely
    Consider a major that isn’t inherently hostile to conservative ideas. The hard sciences like physics and chemistry are much less likely to be politicized in part, because the material is less subjective. In the social sciences, Political Science and Economics tend to be more tolerant of conservative ideas, if only because a proportionally large minority of the faculty hold views that are centrist or right of center.

    I remember when I took a sociology class, our teacher tried telling us how women get paid less than men. So I asked her why, then, don't companies hire women over men if they can save money, and she completely avoided my question.

      Don't bother slapping them with economics or math, they can't answer logic or else those type of professors will look like they're questioning the hard sciences or mathematics. To believe that the wage gap exists you must believe the central idea of Capitalism; profit motivation, is false. And from there you must try to prove that all business owners or employers in the nation are somehow colluding together to pay women less and pay men more... Those type of ideas lay in the realm of conspiracies.

      charlie freeman I agree with you, but don't forget that you a can have politicall views and in the same time being able to accept other people's views and even yourself quetsioning them.
      That's no longer the case since liberals are't allowing opinions outside their cultural marksist way of thinking by playing the *insert word which ends in ist/phobic* card.
      Left wingers are using so called "hate speach" to reduce anyone who objects to silence to avoid debating.

      You seem to be the type to be interested in other obsured stories of propaganda, so I shall share mine.
      I'm not liberal nor conservative nor communist, and by no means a patriot in the conventional sense, mind you.
      The middle school math textbooks (in my school 6-8th grade) are labled as "multicultural math", though I haven't seen much ideology in the math curriculum.
      As for my former schools' most pathetic history course, I have a great many complaints.
      For one, our study of European history consisted only of a brief overview of WWI in 6th, an average length course on the medeval period in 7th (just the bad parts though) with enphasis on why the crusades were "unprevoked", and in 8th grade: nothing in regards to the history of Europe. Similar story for East Asia (I find it to be one of if not the most interesting subjects in history), but not as bad.
      As for the american history class, sh*t hits the fan fast, although the real B.S. begins in 8th grade. The textbooks are written by Howard Zinn, who judging by his later chapters in "A Young People's History of the United States Vol. I" is very likely a communist or liberitarian-socialist. And while he makes some good points on unjustified american wars, it makes no note whatsoever of american inventions; only of american oppressions.
      As for the history of american Indians:
      We are taught in multiple grades that they were not as civilized as Europeans, but that american Indians were in fact, more civilized than Europeans. Dispite the amount of coverage they get, I have little more to say on this.
      As for Arabs, in 7th grade we had a lengthly unit on them, free of any critisisms, we were tought only of their inventions and successes, and none of their faults.
      As for the history of Black, we are not even taught of their acomplishments beyond the civil rights movement in america, and nearly nothing of African history beyond briefly learning about Mali in 7th grade.
      I haven't the energy to go into the lack of masculinity, endless posters and early indoctrination, perhaps I may reuturn to write a part 2, though I'll retire for the nigh now.

    For me the hardest challenge is going to be a liberal school while being part Hispanic and Native American. The reason being people call me a race traitor saying I should be more liberal and be more open minded. It sucks because I can’t express my beliefs because of my race and or ethnicity I have to fit a certain mold to please people I can’t be my own person. To me that’s degrading because I feel oppressed and betrayed by my own people for not letting me be who I am.

    Yeah, I go to college in NJ, and I have some conservative views. I did a report on gun control in Sociology class, and how I think it's hurting people more than it helps them, because crime goes up after new gun control legislation, and everyone was supposed to discuss the topics after you did your report, and nobody really said much after my report. I am a shy person to begin with, so getting up in front of the whole class and stating my unpopular opinion was pretty terrifying, but I'm also very proud that I actually managed to do it.

So gender is technically not bioligical and gender is cultural, yes of course they're are two sexes, but Gender is different than sex. Stop denying science conservatives

    • @wubzy968
      @wubzy968 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I guess you could call your gender "mayonnaise". But no mayonnaise is not a gender. "The behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex" is another gender definition in the oxford dictionary. Sex is determined by the genitalia, mayonnaise does not have genitalia so therefore it cannot have a sex, and therefore NOT a gender.

      Bexy Soy No, incorrect. Gender and Sex are actually the same thing, but because the leftists had not wanted their poor feelings declined, they had put two different things. Let me repeat, two different things, that in the end are the same. Gender/Sex are the same thing in mostly every single language, except for English and a few others. Without even being biological, we all know there are two genders. When you’re born, you’re a female or Male. That’s all.

      actually, I’m just in high school and just saying something that sounds conservative gets the students mad at me and I can see that teachers are usually liberals. Also, from my experience, girls tend to be liberals and most of the people in my schools are girls. And all of the school administration is women. There are only three male teachers and my school is from pre-K all the way up to 12th grade. Therefore, there are many liberals, it’s not because the girls are stupid, it’s because girls tend to be less skeptical, so when a teacher says “women get paid less”, girls will just believe it without any evidence.

Nothing gets done in politics becuase no one listens to each other and its in large part due to people calling themselves "proud republicans/democrats". it makes them less open to other views. be independent, make up your mind about each policy and if you end up supporting mostly conservative ideas thats ok!

    • @MilesHacker
      @MilesHacker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well the world's most stable economies are socialist countries, so it's pretty damn clear that it works. True socialism may not be the right term, but it is certainly true that some countries (like Cuba and Brazil) just can't make it work, and that's not socialism's fault.

    • @Nobody-kg8md
      @Nobody-kg8md 7 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Miles Hacker that's not true at all, the most stable economies are those who have an adoption of Capitalism. This is because these economies have a free market where the resources are not owned by the government. This success by capitalism is attributed to the fact that capitalist societies allow free market entry/exit, and allow entrepreneurship. I'm an Econ major, and I can assure you that socialism is failing, see Venezuela. See China where they do nothing but print off fiat money as they lower deeper into a financial crisis.

    • @MilesHacker
      @MilesHacker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm not denying that capitalism works. I'm saying socialism works as well. Obviously if capitalism didn't work, the United States would not be thriving, and if socialism didn't work, then socialist countries such as New Zealand and Denmark would not be thriving. Socialism still allows for a free market, which is what separates it from communism. Socialism is simply an adjustment to the way taxes are collected to ensure that the majority of the population is in the middle class. Communism essentially means that the government owns everything. Communism definitely does NOT work, and the countries that use it are currently suffering from extreme corruption. Venezuela is just another example of a country that overdid socialism and made it too communist. Bernie Sanders believes in a different type of socialism, one that is stable and more mild than that of Venezuela. Bernie Sanders' socialism would mimic the world's prosperous socialist economies to make the American economy just a little more stable.

      What? It works YET but it will not last forever. The super-socialist European Union is in a deep financial crisis and economic stagnation. This is one of the main reasons why people voted for Brexit and why conservative parties are growing and winning. All around Europe the European youth is more conservative than their parents and grandparents. Like Margaret Thatcher said: 'The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.'

    • @VitorALHatje
      @VitorALHatje 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Denmark and New Zealand are actually Social Democrats and everything they've achieved in the economic side is thanks to capitalism. Just like Sweden is taken as an example of a socialist country that worked, but everything they did economically was under capitalism rule. I guess it's a trend, getting rich with free market and then slicing up some of the spoils with the population before some financial crisis hits due to their now weaker economic system and then restart the process. The problem with Venezuela and Brazil, besides extreme corruption, is that both skip the part were they use capitalism to enrich, and even though they somehow solved these two problems, I think it would still be a huge time for them to even think in making a social democrat system work properly with their swollen government and stupid politics. As for Communism, I really think that the 20th century was a huge attestation for everyone: extreme left ideologies are nothing more than utopias, even their nationalist and slightly modified versions (Fascism and Nazism) were proven to be even worse crap. We still need a proof from the far-right though, like the libertarians - not the anarchists - that is, with you follow the classic /more state - less state/ political spectrum, but that's just nomenclature and categorization after all, practically no ones agrees on it, even specialists don't.

    I still remember my Ancient Literature class my freshman year. The professor was, as usual, liberal but he was also VERY knowledgable about his material. He was also infamous for being an incredibly harsh grader, even among the Honors College professors. Among the ancient texts we studied was the Bible, and he knew the words inscribed within better than anyone in the classroom (even though the wisdom of such words eluded him). This was exasperated by the fact that right about half of the students were Christians (I know, I went to church with them all). Yet no one else came to the Bible's defense or really even participated in class discussions all that much. In fact, it was really only myself and this one atheist girl who actively participated in class discussions.
    So right about the week or so before finals, after an extensive debate about the Bible and the morals tought within it, he pulled me aside after the bell rang. Previously in the course I had demonstrated a great capacity for logical deduction and intellectual rigor through my diligent classwork and class discussions. He asked me "You're so smart... do you really believe in this book?" Without hesitation I responded "Absolutely" and walked out. But it was the way he asked it that sticks out in my memory. It wasn't incredulous, accusatory, or derisive. He was honestly confused. It sounded like he had developed a notion that Christians were stupid, weak-willed, and weak-minded people, and my passionate and logical defense of my beliefs was causing some internal conflict.
    I don't know what happened to him after that. I remember being one of only two people to earn an A in that course, but that's not important. I can only hope that through my words and actions I sowed the seeds that would eventually bring him to Jesus Christ.

      And yes, I can demonstrate that conservatives have more common sense. Let's talk about the 2016 elections. Now, when Obama got elected, no right wing supporter rioted or demanded a recount. But when Trump got elected, the left rioted and demanded recounts. The left lost and threw temper tantrums just because Hitllary didn't win. That, at least for me, doesn't show me common sense at all.

    • @freethoughtgreg6424
      @freethoughtgreg6424 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. This "people complained when trump won but not when obama won" is factually false, and is an assertion and an anecdote
      2.trump is an actual criminal, he is actively creating a swamp in washington, ramping up needless wars and casualties, botching relationships with unstable dictators, and is openly oppressing LGBT and non-christians. I would hope people would throw fits about him running the country.
      3. If you can not actually demonstrate that conservatives have more common sense, then dont assert that
      4. Liberalism correlates positively with being educated and non-religious, so i already have a case over you that liberals have more common sense.

    True story:
    In my college Spanish course, halfway through the semester, someone didn't like that the professor didn't inherently know their preferred gender, and got up and left the class in a huff one day out of no where with no warning. We were all literally trying to figure out what had gone wrong. When someone had pieced it together that they were non-binary, our professora (literally the sweetest professor you could ask for) actually rushed out of the room to try and hunt "them" down in order to apologize to "them". Next class, I arrived to find a note taped to the empty room explaining that our professora had been removed (obviously for "insensitivity") and that we were going to be assigned a brand new one. But don't worry. This is a happy ending. A bunch of us banded together to write to the department chair to get our professora reinstated by giving our side of what actually happened and we won. Our professora returned while the other person did not and good riddance because this is not how you win allies. The war on basic reality is real. So stay vigilant my friends. God bless.

      There's a four point square - authoritarian to individualist, far left (communist/total state) to far right (no state).
      The problems today are not classic liberals who often want a large state to take care of people and control some things compared to conservatives who want a smaller state and larger alternative institutions. It is the authoritarian left that says the state has to be huge AND want state power to force everyone to agree with them, then attack all groups and institutions that don't align.
      Conservatives don't care if liberals live in a commune in the woods or their liberal newspapers, conservatives have theirs. Liberals usually don't care if conservatives have their religious private schools aside from public though push out conservative religious groups in school.
      It is the authoritarian that has repeatedly tried to enroll young children of homosexuals in private schools that teach traditional values, then rush to the media and send death threats to schools that decline the enrollment. (Happened at a private religious school near us, in the name of love, the LBGT allies threatened to burn down a school with 200+ kids inside to wipe out the haters' children). If the school admits the child, then they show this crying 6-7 year old that these mean people teach that Mommy and Mommy are bad, you have to change your teachings. Don't change it, and they sue. It isn't the classic liberal live and let live, it is get out of the public square to your enclaves, then show up at the enclaves and demand that even that be shut down.
      The same is true with the SJWs showing up at conservative events with airhorns or actually blocking entry of the audience, denying others freedom of speech and assembly in the name of fighting hate. It is the authoritarian left that in the name of helping various victim groups seeks to police speech of others with the state power to financially punish those who disagree. That is fascism.

    I remember in my late 20s, feeling somewhat frustrated and disillusioned when I went to church, or especially Bible study. We'd discuss what we were studying, and people would always applaud my insight - when the truth was, everything I was talking about was readily available to everyone else there, in the same Scriptures. The phrase, "Get on my level," didn't really exist back then, but if it had, I would have applied it liberally.
    A couple years later, I found myself hanging out with a bunch of liberals on the regular. Most nights we just drank coffee and shot the breeze, but often we would discuss politics and religion, and my views stood in stark contrast to theirs. But what kept me coming back instead of getting frustrated and writing them off, were the questions. Rather than simply dismiss my views, these guys wanted to know why I believed as I did, and asked probing questions concerning my convictions. This forced me to find answers to those questions - and, as I did so, it not only deepened my own faith, but opened doors for me to discuss my faith with those who didn't necessarily share it. It strengthed my resolve, and gave me opportunity to evangelize in a very real way.
    My advice to young people is this - find allies and draw strength from them; but make a point of finding also someone who challenges you. Find that friendly rival, someone you can share a cordial relationship with, but who doesn't necessarily see things your way. Listen carefully to that rival's questions, and consider carefully how best to answer them. Hold forum, seek input, and research your own side as though you were the enemy, looking for chinks in your own armor. Let the challenges of those who disagree be your opportunity to shine. Maybe then, your fellows will start to get on your level.

I can't say anything on feminism or social justice as it's taught at a college, because I've never taken those classes, but I've taken enough college classes to know to not make assumptions about knowledge and perspectives will be conveyed to me. For example, I had to take an Art Appreciation class. I thought this was stupid because I felt it wasted time that could be spent on major required courses, and who was anyone to tell me how to appreciate art? But what we actually learned was the history of art and how early art often served not as art as we know it, but was used to convey information, laws, historical record, and beliefs. Art was the first form of written communication, and often was the only record of social perceptions of societies. It wasn't really until recently that the idea of art for art's sake came about. Anyway, I really enjoyed the class. You really don't know what a class is like until you take it.

    I'm in frickin 7th grade and I face these challenges every day at school. We have no allies in my school. We have teachers calling my few fellow conservatives and I IDIOTS, fascists, and racists. We are 12 and 13 years old. We have classes and clubs about "tolerance", which are basically "attack conservatives" classes. We feel lonely. Hated. We have clubs for allies of LGBTQ people, but none for conservatives, who are even more of a minority at my school. All the liberals are graded better. It makes me wonder how the world did this.

    • @MilesHacker
      @MilesHacker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      In 7th grade you can't really associate yourself with either political party. Your brain is not fully developed (That's a fact, I know conservatives like to deny those, but don't even try). The only way someone of your age knows a significant bit about politics is if you spend all your free time studying them, which I highly doubt you do. The reason there's a safe place for LGBT+ people but not conservatives at your school is quite obvious if you actually take the time to think about it: conservatism is an idealogical system that you have full control over, while being LGBT+ is *not* a choice. Try to hold off on politics until at least high school; I can guarantee that you will be able to dive in with a more open and ready mind.

However, just imagine, if you guys had a clubs for anti-gay or anti-blacks, anti-non-Christian, would that maintain a peaceful environment? You said "tolerance is attack to our conservative values you", but it is a school and you are in 7th grade. Every one has the right to education, and a peaceful learning environment. Catholicism is doing substansially better than other sects because they, or at least the Pope has, realised the possibility of evolution, under Gods guidance.
      I'm not saying that evolution makes any more sense than religion, or it is any better. I do say that after critical examination, many do abandon faith, due to personal choice. Free Will, as God may put it. ;-)

It was like I had "conservative constitutionalist" written on my forehead. I wanted to still be respectful of my instructors, but couldn't compromise my beliefs/views. And felt like the only way they would leave me alone was agreeing with them. Which was NOT an option. But after talking with my mom about my frustration with my first month as a college freshman. I came on TH-cam and found this video. And I have now finished out my public speaking class, with a very outspoken environmental liberal instructor, who listened well and would hear me out. Even after covering hard political topics which he encouraged and was excited to hear. And was amazed I was only 18. Thank you so much for helping me through this semester! I've yet to see a liberal channel also provide a conservative view and discuss it with an open mind. Thats why we need as bigger voice as possible to be heard above the noise, this is actually part of what gives rise to the far right in my opinion. I used to consider myself dead centre but the crazier the shit I heard coming from the left over the past decade or so the more it pushed me over to the right, as that tends to be where the common sense view is as opposed to the 'feel good factor' of virtuousness.

    As a 15 year old in high school, I can confirm this liberal media is influential throughout high school education as well. I was a liberal just because I was Asian, and watched many of the late night talk shows (which are obviously biased), but then started to question everything and shifted much more centrist and realized how prevalent and influential the generally pro-Democrat and pro-liberal media is. Then I met my Calc teacher, a 62 year old, one of the most chill teachers, who COMPLETELY changed my viewpoints on everything. He uses actual logic and facts, that's the reason. In fact, the two most intelligent people (teachers) on campus are both conservative leaning, and the former being a staunch conservative who has been very influential and englightening individual. He is a practical man. He did not pursue college education until the age of 25, and once he did, he got rolling. He teaches us USEFULL information in his classes, such as to make money and manage. He taught me and introduced us to the cashflow influx quadrants and how he is in every quadrant (being a district employee, self employed optical engineer that works on telescopes in free time, real estate owner, and investor in stocks). This man, prager university, and Dave Ramsey have been the beacon of enlightenment for me, and I am lucky to have looked at and now know both sides of the coin, and not just the one propagated through media.
