Alternatively, independence could wait for the whole Country till 1980 thus giving the South ample time to consolidate. Again Awo shouldn't have contested in 1959. It was a political miscalculation from which the South has not recovered even now in 2022.

Independence was first proposed in 1953, but in 1956 the Northerners voted against it when the matter was brought up again because the Northerners were not ready at that time. Reason, they couldn't even boast of one graduate when the Western and Eastern region had a lot of them.
