Awesome. I like how she responded in such a respectful way to both people who don’t like the race swap and people who do. Well said. These are some awesome kids
ive been rooting for leah ever since seeing all the controversy online. Its crazy!! a part of me understands but i truly believe she is such an amazing Annabeth and honestly people should just leave her alone because hating on a child is ludacris
Y'all that's my baby, they all are but definitely Leah for sure! And side note, I love how Walker loves and adors her as well, you can see the admiration he has for her, always attentive, always rooting for her and cheering her on; he's in her corner for sure. Like the bond/connection they have is incredible. God forbid if anyone says something wrong about her when he's around oh it's a wrap lol.
Look I just watched the episodes and I loved them but I thought we were supposed to be treating this as a it doesn't matter what skin colour you are yet they bring it up? I don't know someone elaborate for me because I thought they said it didn't matter what skin colour the characters are they were chosen for acting purposes alone? Which she was I loved her few scenes I'm ready for more of her and Percy
It’s important because Black people, especially Black women, don’t get the same opportunities as their white counterparts. There are significantly more media out there catering towards white people than Black people. Her being a major part of this show will change the way young Black kids see themselves in a positive light. Race is a very important part of her character. But the reason people deflect and say it isn’t important is mostly to shut up racists. Race shouldn’t matter but race will always matter until we get rid of white supremacy altogether.
the thing is, her skin tone was to be looked over in terms of casting and comparison to the books/movies cause leah just fit the role perfectly as who she is and how she acts. BUT at the same time, now that annabeth is being played by a black girl, all the history heritage and culture of black people automatically gets attached to the character. so they're ofcourse not gonna hammer u on the head with her race and all but it'll be subtly woven into the story as pat of HER STORY (since the series isnt first person pov unlike the books). and as to why she was asked such a question about her skin color in this interview or any other, i think after all the backlash and hate she's faces over this, we can give her the space to also feel proud to be representing her people in such a role, don't you think. just give it time, people are gonna get over it by s2/
Originally, I wasn't in support of annabeth being played by a black girl. I wanted the characters in the show to look like the ones in the book. Also, I'm not a fan of "blackwashing" characters, though I am African. But after seeing Leah act, I changed my mind. She may not look like Annabeth but she plays the role perfectly. It is clear Rick made the right choice.
You really can’t black wash when the cultural context is completely different. But yes, as long as the soul of the character is the same, then it is OK for them to look fairly different on the outside. We all look different and that can be represented in different, less commonly seen ways. The best person was chosen for the job.
I’m so proud of Leah!!!! Now little Black girls will get to grow up with her as Annabeth Chase.
Little girls in general so it’s gonna be huge
