See, it's easy to forget that EastEnders has actually retained Phil for 20 years since Grant properly left. Yep, that'll make you feel old. No insult to Steve McFadden, he's as great now as he was then. But Grant and Phil were a double act, you really needed them both in the show to get the most out of the characters. But EastEnders now is not a patch on what it was in the 90's, it's gotten so repetitive and stale. If the writing quality had been maintained, maybe they'd have gotten away with only keeping one half of the Mitchell brothers in the show. And they did for maybe 3 or 4 years after Grant left. But now, the show is just crying out for a massive Mitchell brothers reunion. If they ever manage to get Ross Kemp back permanently, the should not waste the opportunity to entirely rebuild the show around them. But, I somehow don't imagine that will ever happen. The heyday of EastEnders is long gone.
I think when Grant left and Phil stayed something was missing, as Phil went off the rails, as all of Grants personality was tacked onto Phil after he left.
James Mckay Grant was definitely the harder of the two. I love both Grant and Phil, but more so Grant. They're at their best, when they work together, though.
