I think we could edit Dave's windy side quests down a bit (political ramblings, overly-detailed descriptions, etc) but when he's focused he can tell a pretty ripping sci-fi yarn. Definitely worth a listen.
you wouldn't be saying that if you'd read Mervyn Peake's Ghormenghast "trilogy", lol goto "Padded Cell Studio"'s channel for an excellent amateur reading.
So no problem with space-faring alien 'puppies' (without opposable thumbs, I assume) but vampires are a deal-breaker? ;) (PS - near the end of book 2 there's what appears to be a plot twist but I haven't gotten through it all yet.)
Weber is good at writing battles, military strategy, and the problems of mounting a campaign of war. He is poor at characterization, though. His stock characters are all macho men and trad wives, with a couple macho female aliens to boot. The book reads like a survivalist fantasy fever dream before it falls off the cliff with an out-of-left-field deus ex machina of a vampire army that saves mankind.
@viviankelley Everyone wants to be a vampire, a cursed and damned creature waiting for the day of judgment. If I knew they really existed, it's better to be a vampire slayer....
Vampires are real. My ex wife was one. I actually used garlic on my front porch to keep her from seeking in my house at 3 am..

It's still Weber. Perfect balance of plausible and fiction. With "cheeky" sense of humor .
Come for the Apocalypse, stay for the Vampires 🩸
Wow. First referrence to ""good solder Svejk" in any western literature!
Oh my God, it's actual vampires. Basarab is literally Vlad the Impaler.
So duuuuuuuuumb. Like... wow, I'm speechless.
Excellent, aliens and vampires together, what more can you wish for?
Undead witches would be cool.
Definitely, dead or alive.
Would like more
Being an actual resident of Aurora Minnesota, I wish he could have at least got the city layout close to correct.
Very confusing but the reader has a great voice. Listening while working so its like the news in the background
If your job is mindless than you can enjoy and keep up
Vampires get explained later it not what you think?
It’s David Weber, sometimes a bit drawn out but great fun. Vampires did seem a somewhat easy fix to the alien problem but eh whatever.
The author sure takes his time.

I just can't take it seriously anymore now that it's vampires.
Hi hi.. patience is not the treit you have.. sorry. By the way there are no vapires, just a name..

Vampires, zombies, and werewolves are a "No" from me, except in magical realms, but I don't think that's what is being dealt with here ... 🤔
I wonder about Vlads opinion of Cheyenne Social Club... 😂
Great story.. and if you want true stories watch the news. Oh what am I saying. No truth there. This is a good story. Glad I heard it.

How many books by this guy have you read?
So what's the problem 😕
So the raided base with the dog aliens all tore up were vampires for real? As in vampires native to Earth or vampire like aliens?
Macho men and trad wives? You mean not the woke crap every one else is pushing on us? I'll definitely listen. Thanks!!
Sounds like a good book to fall asleep listening to. ;)
How refreshing to have a narrator you can understand. Most audio book narrators these days are pathetic.
We will rise again...
To suck their blood!
The book must be good when commenters attempt to dissuade further listening by posting alleged spoilers.
P.S. HFY!
Where’s the rest of it ? I’ve reached hour 42 and it just stops ! This is not good 😡
The guy loves to ramble you could go an hour without anything happen
Blah blah blah computers computers geeky s***super redundant safety safety bunch of nerds
The guy narrating the second book is terrible
You haven't heard horrrible.
Started out good but then went STUPID!! Vampires? really? don't mix genres.. That's not clever that's just lazy writing..
Vampires?now I definitely need to listen to it
You mean like Cowboys and Aliens?
