I remember playing this game in sleepover parties, complete with sugary soda, candy, and lots of pizza. I just remember playing this game from 7 pm to 4 am. Goddamn it where did the good ole days go?
As a kid born in the early 2000’s, I wasn’t allowed to play Halo until around the release of the MCC. My older brother was a Halo fanatic and would tell me fantastic stories of the Master Chief that would leave me dreaming of playing the games one day. When the MCC released, my mom finally took me to buy the game and my brother and I played through the first three games together that night. Today, my brother and I don’t talk much and only I see him once every few months. Playing these games with him were some of the last I’ve shared with him and I will remember them forever.
Could not agree more. It made the story feel layered and satisfying rather than black and white. The addition of the Arbiter made the game interesting and thoughtful rather than boring and derivative. Halo 2 is easily my favorite Halo game, both in terms of single player and multiplayer. It is not a perfect game, but it is simply awesome. They took creative risks that paid off. Halo 2 is a unique and fun game, something that cannot be said of recent games in general.
I remember going to collect my pre-ordered Halo 2 Collectors Edition from Gamestation on release day in 2004. I’d never been so excited for a game. Biggest surprise was how much more I enjoyed the multiplayer over the campaign. I’m not a multiplayer guy but Halo 2 online was spectacular. Capture the flag on Zanzibar FTW.
The Halo 2 campaign on Legendary was by far the hardest game I have ever played. The snipers were so accurate when shooting and it was very hard to get past them. The Brutes were so powerful were hard to kill.
Halo 2 is by far the best Halo game ever released, the gameplay is at the height of the franchise introducing duel wielding and vehicle combat, the story is gripping and takes a look into the covenant background even letting you play as the Arbiter which is fucking badass! i wish more could have been done in the future to further his story and character but here it is done excellently, the power struggle between the races of the covenant to earn the respect of the prophets is awesome to watch, and the music in this game is great in its own right ! i bought the ost as soon as it was released, the music adds so much atmosphere to the levels unlike allot of modern first person shooters that add a generic soundtrack, this game hits the nail on the head when it comes to style, it even competes with the Halo 3- odst soundtrack, the weapons feel great too! the sleek slashing action of the energy sword, to the frantic powerful while un-accurate SMG, they all feel smooth and complement each of the enemies in the game perfectly, this might sound fanboyish but i truly think this game is one of the best first person shooters too date !
First time I played Halo 2 was this year I skipped right to Halo 3 and ODST (my video game moments are short lived).... this year finally played REACH, Halo 2 , 4 and 5 and I must say Halo 2 story was definitely one of the best in the series by far. Id say it’s my second favorite after Halo 3 with the original CE coming in right behind it though overall nothing will beat CE in terms of nostalgia. But to say the story leaves a lot to be desired is pretty far fetched. The story really had me engaged also the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of Arbiter and made me like him even more in Halo 3. Outstanding game loved Greg Kasavin but he dropped the ball on this one
ThePreciseClimber Um no... Halo 4 takes 8 hours on average to beat for just the main story and with extras roughly 10 hours, it's literally the same length...
Meh I don't think people back then really understood just how great gaming was taking off. I mean now we have developers that aren't even concerned with revolutionizing gaming at all. Now they are simply releasing the next game with a new methods to keep you spending money on that title even after the $60 price tag.
"Its probably the single greatest online console game ever" I agree, but for me its JUST the greatest game ever. Everything about this game feels right, and even the not so detailed/oldie graphics, in fact I'd take those anyday even for the halo 5 graphics (not telling that I dont love halo 5 in fact its the opposite) It make it feel more like a pure videogame, the ultimate escence of Halo I dont know, Halo 2 its just a dream as a gaming experience. Literally a dream. Period.
Carolus true. H2 was class, simple and sophisticated at the same time. H5 looks like any other 4k futuristic videogame out there...oh yeah with a similar gameplay as all halo's. It may be fun, but it ain't legendary. Originality died with halo 3 and maybe reach. But this...this was the pinnacle of it all.
I like halo 2 a lot more than the first one. Hijacking vehicles makes you feel like you can actually beat an elite in a ghost without having a vehicle yourself. The vehicle controls are much less frustrating, and many of them can now boost for sections where you don't need them for killing. The greater range of weaponry helps if you want to choose your strategy more. The battle rife is amazing. You get to learn more about the covenant. The level design is less repetitive (remember the library?). This is a lot less frustrating to play, at least for me.
I miss these days when game reviews were pure and honest....not a bunch of grifters and playstation fanboy reviewers trying to give big games low scores for clicks😔
Something I gotta say is I myself really didn't find and of the levels repetitive. That compared to Halo 1 where I would say it was its worst problem. Another thing that I didn't necessarily not like, but found just a little disappointing was the lack of the original health and shield system. I almost wish that the arbiter retained this system. I think that is more stealthy subtle style of play would have still fit this.
I remember renting this at a relative's house before I even knew what XBL was. I wandered around the MP levels and browsed the many settings, imagining how fun it might be to play against other people. I finally got to play it online on my own Xbox a while later after having played Halo PC a ton, although even then I didn't play it online much for some reason. I played Halo PC's multiplayer for probably over one or two thousand hours in total.
6:55 "As for the AI as mentioned it's as impressive as ever because the enemy just makes for a dynamic and rather intelligent opponent" cuts to footage of master chief gunning down a jackal running away with its tail tucked between its legs

Everything about Halo 2 has to be considered in the context of how it was made: they were forced to scrap the whole thing and start over from scratch less than a year before the game was set to debut. It's a little rough around the edges but the graphics, the plot & story, the campaign, the soundtrack, and the legendary multiplayer make Halo 2 easily the best game in the franchise - especially when you consider that they made it from scratch in a matter of months.
Halo 1-3 are the only games that I can consistently play their corresponding campaigns and never get bored idk what it is about it. I’ve played all three campaigns at least 15 times never mind that solid Multiplayer
i need to replay this one, i havent beat this campaign since relase and now that I have tackled all the others on legendary maybe I should do the same here.
like most other people, I miss the assault rifle when I play this, but if anyone who still plays this should know: its really only a name and a model, all the firing mechanics are still there as the SMG. don't believe me? play halo 1 and use the assault rifle, then use the SMG in halo 2. also note the crosshair. its the same one from the halo 1 assault rifle. but for halo 2 itself, its my favorite halo. best gameplay, best game, I say. best campaign still goes to h3 though
I remember Halo 2 was really the first console game to bring online MP to the top. The campaign was alright, the gameplay was always right. So Microsoft, please release an anniversary edition and bring back Halo 2 servers on PC!
This guy has no idea what he's talking about in reference to the storyline, cliffhanger or not it was one of the best ever. Tbh the cliffhanger made it that much more impressive.
I liked halo 2's ending coes it gave hope that it was coming to next gen . And when I completed halo 1 I was thinking about weather it was just going to fade away or stay forever and that worried me a bit
lol i have to say, his criticism was annoying me about the campaign. It didn't feel short, the cliffhanger ending is not a dealbreaker, and the set pieces were different enough. Chief's final level was dull and dark but thats ok. Arbiters levels were awesome too.
The people that complain about the Halo 2 story would say Empire Strikes Back is "disappointing" if it were released today because it ends on a cliffhanger.
you should halo 2 had by FAR the hardest campaign on legendary ever thos damn snipers were so hard to get past and all covenent snipers would inant kill you even at full health 1 shot kill and there everywhere let me tell you i beat at 5 hours a level
It still mind boggles me why Bungie removed the assault rifle from Halo1 pretty much every ones favorite weapon from that game. What were they thinking that was stupid
Halo 2’s campaign was much better than Halo 1. It had much more variety in the environments and more interesting characters. I loved playing as the Arbiter. The second half of Halo CE basically just recycled the previous levels and it felt like you were just backtracking through the same environments.

What I don't like about Halo is the fact it gives you no map or general direction you should go. When I play a fps with short linear campaigns. I want a descent map or waypoint.
honestly I never have trouble with that upset the first game sometimes but that's probably because I beat the games so many times I'm used to the layouts.

Hot take: this was always my least favorite Halo. Yea, the story was great...but the campaign was an absolute slog. By the time it had1st released i had played thru Halo CE probably about 15 times, but after getting thru Halo 2 the 1st time i never played it again, except for MP. I decided to give it another go after picking up the MCC, and...boy, i think my opinion has actually gotten worst. Im halfway thru it and im absolutely hating it. The campaign just has too much padding/filler. Its like they took the Library from the first game, and used it as a template for almost all of the installation interior levels....only worse. The interior levels are sprawling and maze like. And very cleverly...they took away the mission markers. So i sometimes spent 15-20 minutes just trying to figure out where im supposed to go or what im supposed to do. So many times it turned out to be a single flood spore that was caught in the architecture that needed to be culled to open up the way forward. Slog 🤮 And dont get me started on Bungies habit of forcing you into a pressed situation: enter a completely empty room or corridor, wait til youre right in the MIDDLE of said chamber, then spawn about 40 flood in front and back of you 😡. Repeat about 200 times. Almost none of the open field tactics from the first game work here. The entire experience is entirely too controlled and scripted. Too much use of instantly spawning enemies, infinite spawns, and "wait here til this happens" scenarios. The campaign's only saving grace is when you find openish outside areas, but they often times find bs ways to ruin these also. Honestly, the campaign is entirely too long. Both times ive played thru it i fiund myself begging for it to just get over with: something i have never felt playing any of the other Halo campaigns (ive yet to play H5 or Infinite) The new visuals and audio for the anniversary edition are extremely well done, but the campaign gameplay experience is still bloated and ill conceived. Its probably more fun in co-op, but i never needed a friend to enjoy any of the other Halo campaigns At the end of the day i think they missed the mark on this one. It could easily be cut in half and still deliver the same story experience. This is like a 6 hour cut of Fellowship of the Ring where we spend 3 of those hours watching the hobbits walking between towns while they get jumped every 20 feet by random orc squads. Blehhh I feel like almost everyones love affair with this game centers around either the story itself, which IS fantastic, but buried beneath hours of mind-numbing monotony....or the multiplayer, which i seldom touch. Everything that H2 tried to do...H3 did better and properly. I can fire up H3, Reach, CE, or even H4 (even though the Prometheans are even more annoying than H2's Brutes) and have a good time. I think H2 was just 3 or 4 years too early. By the third installment Bungie had fine tuned the experience to perfection.
That's by far the worst cutscene in the game for pop in. Not really indicative of the entire game. I was surprised by the ending but I didn't feel like the campaign was lacking in content. You can play Halo games co op online now with the Master Chief Collection. HOWEVER, some stupid decisions were made on how it works. If you live too far apart, it will be unplayable since the controls for both players are dependent on the host... Baffling. Every Halo game is like this. Even Reach, even Halo 4. Many other co op games are like this. It's like they expect only people that live across the street from each other will be interested in playing co op. I'm closer with online friends that live on the other side of the world than I am with any real life friends that play video games at this point. What a shame. Capcom games generally function well enough even for people even with 500ms of ping fwiw. Hats off.
The hype not sure mostly marketing, but you have to look at the games as a whole. They were well made productions with characters, settings and visuals very seldom seen on consoles. They also had very good polish and if looking behind the scenes you will see people who actually took time to get every detail down and were passionate about what they.

Too much use of instantly spawning enemies, infinite spawns, and "wait here til this happens" scenarios. The campaign's only saving grace is when you find openish outside areas, but they often times find bs ways to ruin these also.
Honestly, the campaign is entirely too long. Both times ive played thru it i fiund myself begging for it to just get over with: something i have never felt playing any of the other Halo campaigns (ive yet to play H5 or Infinite)
The new visuals and audio for the anniversary edition are extremely well done, but the campaign gameplay experience is still bloated and ill conceived. Its probably more fun in co-op, but i never needed a friend to enjoy any of the other Halo campaigns
At the end of the day i think they missed the mark on this one. It could easily be cut in half and still deliver the same story experience. This is like a 6 hour cut of Fellowship of the Ring where we spend 3 of those hours watching the hobbits walking between towns while they get jumped every 20 feet by random orc squads.
Blehhh
I feel like almost everyones love affair with this game centers around either the story itself, which IS fantastic, but buried beneath hours of mind-numbing monotony....or the multiplayer, which i seldom touch.
I agree with some of your points
ya tipe in halo 2 xlink kia on youtube and you will see people playing it in 2012
What about in 2020?
pc servers are still up.
I disagree with this review a lot.
i love halo series
but the crosshair.....
Best game ever!
17 minutes god damn
really? oh man then I gotta get the pc version ha
Earth section totally sucked imo.
Hats off.
Haha me
Halo 2 is equal to Mario 3!!!!!
18 min review? Reviews should be around 5 to 7 min. I just want a quick look, not every aspect of the game.
These old Gamespot reviews are pretty cringeworthy.
Never understood the hype behind this game serie.
The hype not sure mostly marketing, but you have to look at the games as a whole. They were well made productions with characters, settings and visuals very seldom seen on consoles. They also had very good polish and if looking behind the scenes you will see people who actually took time to get every detail down and were passionate about what they.
