    We never had a “low ready”. This may have been lost in translation. It was always “High Ready” as far as scoring, lines or outside the big bottle did not count. Outside the inner bottle, was 2.
    The target was also a QIT 97. Hope this helps.

    @3:37 to 3:57. I was taught that "low ready" is essentally you align the sights to the target, then you bring the gun just down enough to see most of the target over the gun. It's basically as if you're trying to have the gun ready to go, but you need to see the entire target/person. I'm not an Air Marshall or anything, but I just wanted to help with what I can. Thanks for the dedication to provide accurate content on a drill that is seemingly impossible to find accurate info on.

      We appreciate that! Yeah there are so many definitions of "low ready" out there and the FAM qual standards that we saw were already pretty ambiguous.

    I was discussing this with Ken Hackathorn, who actually taught a couple of classes for the federal air marshals back in the day. His comment was, "You have to remember, the air marshals changed their scoring system quite a bit over time. But the first time I conducted a class for them, it was: Inside the big bottle - what some people call "the outer bottle" - was 5 points. Anything outside the big bottle was 0 points. You had to have at least 135 out of a possible 150 points to pass, which meant you couldn't drop more than three shots outside the big bottle. And if you even touched the line on the big bottle, you got the lower score."
    So, no points for missing the bottle, or even touching its outline.

      @@Tier1Concealed Also according to Ken Hackathorn, when he was running the air marshals through the qual, the broken line around the bottom of the bottle wasn't there, nor was the solid line at the bottom of the "short big bottle." Rather it was just all one "tall big bottle." Which is how you guys were scoring it, just thought that was worth mentioning.
      Applying the 5/0 scoring system, with everything inside the tall big bottle counting 5, and anything outside that, or even touching the line, counting 0, the scores would have been:
      TICS: 150.
      CLARKSHOOTER: 145.
      ADAMSIZZLE: 140.
      GUN_N_GRAPHICS: 120.
      HIGHRISKFITNESS2.0: 135 ON-TARGET BUT OVERTIME ON THE RELOAD DRILL.
      MILESMORTENSEN: 135.
      So, using the actual, original scoring system didn't really change the final results, still the same four of six Passes.

    The FBI qual target is based on the QIT 99. It spec's I've seen indicate the FAMS target is based on the QIT 97. Also, the torso and head boxes are connected in a specific way creating an inner 5 point zone. Any hit on the line of the 5 pt. zone out to inside the large bottle is 2 points. Line breaks on the outer bottle line are a miss. The bottom of the center mass box on the FAMS target is 1" shorter than the center mass box on the FBI target. I have made a template which is a hybrid of the QIT 97 and 99 so I can shoot either qual on the same target.

    • @TheTopherloaf
      @TheTopherloaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This. The connected inner 5 point zone then is the "small bottle" which then, it makes sense to award two points for hits outside of this area because you are still in the main silhouette. FAMs absolutely have zero room for error. Article or interview (can't remember which it was) with Matt Graham of Ares Watch Co. details that concept of a tiny tiny margin of error; having to potentially make that shot on a plane and those 2pt. fliers are not okay. Just a simple target change makes it make more sense.

    Digging the content guys and great shooting! The explanation for still getting points outside the silhouette is it’s a reduced target area symbolizing potentially lethal shots on a person. Outside of the lines would still constitute hits on a person but more than likely survivable. Just stand directly in front of the target and you guys can reference it off of each other.

    Food for thought. Chris Christian posted an article on NRA Shooting Illustrated (3.11.19) on this course of fire and that target FBI-QIT-97 is the target to use. And it does seem to make sense with the 5 point and 2 point issue with needing to be inside the Coke bottle versus still getting points if just on the paper.

    @A Truth Seeker You’re incorrect about the type of handgun carried by FAMs, they carry a Glock 19, which fires 9mm and have for over a year. They did carry a Sig P229, which had roughly a 12 lbs double action trigger pull and then went down to roughly 4 lbs single action trigger pull. You were correct about the holster, they carried a DeSantis leather holster but could wear any type of cover garment, didn’t have to be a jacket. And the FAM service hasn’t used the TPC as a qualifier since mid ‘02, they’ve used the PPC qualification since that time.
    Stage 3 was referred as a 6 round rhythm dri ll, which took a lot of practice with the Sig p229 DA/SA trigger.
    So for entertainment purposes, they were pretty close with their second attempt. Correct pistol but older course of fire.

  • @markhatfield5621
    @markhatfield5621 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The correct target is sold by Action Target and is 'QIT-97''. It is currently labeled the 'FBI Modified QIT Qualification Target' but more than one target uses that same name. It is the same shortened 'Q' as yours but the center high scoring area is different. The narrow pencil-like center section is fourteen inches tall, four inches wide with the top third of it being three inches wide. Only hits in the narrow section receive 5 points. Anywhere else in the silhouette is 2 points. If you want to save money on targets then just fold a standard sheet of paper in half lengthwise, that is 4 1/4 by 11. Put all your hits on that in the allotted time and you will be good.

    @JJLTACTICALSOLUTIONS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    WARNING:
    The following comment is from an ex Federal Air Marshal.
    Here is a little history of the Federal Air Marshal original tactical pistol course.
    The FAM TPC (Federal air marshal tactical pistol course) was required to pass the academy back in 2001. The student had 3 attempts towards the end of training or they were let go. The original firearm that was used was the Sig P229 chambered in .357 Sig.
    The course of fire that everyone does on these TH-cam videos are normally incorrect. They always use the incorrect firearm, ammunition, holster and cover garment. Also on stage 3 the 6 round ‘ rhythm’ drill has a 3 second time but no one knows that you can not have more than 0.60 second spread between rounds. This was the stage I struggled with because I got all 6 rounds out in under 3 seconds but I had a spread of over 0.60 seconds between 1 of the rounds. I failed my first 2 attempts but passed on my 3rd and final attempt.
    Also what people don’t understand is if you failed on your 3rd attempt they had you pack your bags and you were let go so that adds a TON of stress knowing if you fail you were fired.
    Now the surprise:
    The FAM TPC (Federal air marshal tactical pistol course) is no longer required to graduate the FAM training. I felt this was a huge mistake back in 2002. I guess I was biased with the agencies decision to not use it for graduation because I passed the original TPC.
    So in reality when videos are done like this on TH-cam it’s kind of for entertainment purposes due to the fact Air Marshals are no longer using this course of fire (test) due to the fact over 60% of students couldn’t pass it anyways.
    Now it gets worse.
    In an attempt to design another advanced test they changed it and called it the ATPC (Aircraft tactical pistol course). What’s interesting about this course of fire is there are aircraft seats and dummies. So when the buzzer (PAC-timer) goes off you would either shoot from the aircraft seat, or lean out in the isle and shoot, etc.
    Now here is the bad news: The ATPC test was originally supposed to be pass or fail but once again so many students were failing they just made it a participation only test. Again I was upset due to the fact the agency was ‘ dumbing down’ the standards just to fill seats.
    To the maker of this TH-cam video; Your attempt was good. The Glock apparently is the new weapon the FAMs have now or are going to get them soon but the Glock was never used on the TPC. By you guys utilizing the Glock with 9mm and not the Sig P229 with .357 Sig, well you had a handicap. The TPC times were designed with the Sig P229 chambered with .357 Sig. By utilizing the Glock chambered in 9mm, well let’s say it was easier for the shooters in this video. May I suggest you use a Sig P229 chambered in .357 Sig and give it another go.
    I wish I lived by your guys because I have not shot the FAM TPC in over 11 years.

    The pdf from gunlaws doesn't say it but others do, the inner boxes count as 5 points, outside of those but inside the "bottle" count as 2, outside the bottle is 0.
    That would make sense to me. Either way, I think you showed your skill as even if you counted the points that way you still passed with ease. And since every article I read about scoring the qualification had minot differences, I think you did the best you could!

      @@Tier1Concealed Thanks, I believe you're right. That link you provided (that I finally read all of....) said "All stages must be successfully shot to qualify". I was over by .07 seconds on one stage and by .80 seconds on another stage. No misses, so I just need to shoot faster (ie Change magazines faster). If I had gotten both of those shots off and totally missed the entire target I would have had 140, so it's in reach. Thank you for your response!!

    How about the 2x2x2 drill Dave Spaulding shoots for a coin/belt buckle in his Handgun Combatives class. Drill is Two rounds in two seconds at 21’. Target is a standard 3x5 card. 5” card is side up and must be fired from concealment. As Dave describes it, it is a skill on demand drill taken from the US Army Special Forces.
    Also the Handgun Combatives standards are a great set of drills that demonstrate your proficiency with a pistol. Tier 1 Citizen on you tube has the most accurate list of the standards as the video shows Dave running a student through the drills. Dave is a long time mentor and I consider him a friend that is a go to for no BS HANDGUN COMBATIVES, not range kata crap. His teaching is great but now retired.

    This video: the whiny, defensive, and butt-hurt attitude is not a good look.
    So people rightly pointed out (for information's sake) that passing this qual requires a none race gun. Must of those comments were not attacks on y'all. You guys are good shots and know it. Don't worry if somebody on a keyboard claims to be better.
    And if you feel the need to redeem a qual in the future, make sure you get all the stuff right or its worse than a waste.
    Thanks for the videos.

    You screwed up again. The target used is listed as the FBI-QIT-97, which is a bottle-shaped silhouette with an inner-scoring zone....The targets are scored as follows: Hits in the inner bottle count five points. Hits outside the inner bottle, but within the outer bottle count two points. A target miss is zero points. Accordingly, you failed the 1st run (using the wrong scoring rings as the "inner bottle") with 10 outside the inner ring (-30 points for a score of 120). 135 was passing. All else looks good guys. Hardest drill in the govt isn't "anywhere in the bottle" like the FBI!
