  • Oh, the concerned questions asked by adult children: Am I responsible for my parents medical bills? Do I have to pay for my parents nursing home? What is a child's responsibility for their elderly parent? These are very legitimate questions because an unwanted answer could be a financial disaster for an adult child.
In this video I will discuss long held laws about family responsibility and obligations to pay for the medical bills of their parents. You will find out about who might be responsible to pay for their parents medical bills, under what conditions and what you can do to protect yourself and your parent.

I am from England so thankfully this is not going to affect me but what if a parent was abusive and then offspring want nothing to do with them?

What can happen in case the adult child isn’t working or doesn’t have stable employment or income (and some elderly parents even still support their adult children), and one of the parents gets incapacitated, needing long term care, and they’re in a state where Filial Laws apply, could the adult child still be required to pay parental support, just like paying child support? Thank you

what would happen if the parents did not know where the child lives or their name what if the parents were abusive in the past but it was not reported? how does responsibility fall on multiple siblings? can you shift responsibility to another person?

State: “too bad, pay up or we’ll come after you.”
This needs to be taken to the SC!

I think you’re right, Janet. If your parent lives in one of the states that might implement this, they all say something like they will collect from an adult child who has a means to pay, or who can afford. But I couldn’t find a financial cutoff anywhere. I would imagine that having only social security would limit your means.

@@SofiaAmirpoor since when does the world work where the kid is responsible for the parent? It’s absurd just cause we are related to someone we are legally responsible for that person, they aren’t our children, we are theirs! And I think it’s silly that state to state it varies

@@SofiaAmirpoorso my mom lives in VA and her mother just went to a nursing home and hopefully Medicaid will be granted but if it wasn’t, I guess she has to hope that she’s not the first case in the state ever? Lol

What if the children live in another state?

I believe that the laws will apply to the state that your parent lives in. However, I suggest that you do a search for " filial laws for (parent's state)" and you should be able to find info specific to your parent's situation. Good luck!

I would move off grid or commit suicide.
I imagine more people will do this, and then the laws will change.
This is a societal issues, and will have domino effect...as the funds taken from the adult child, to pay parents bills...would take from the adult child to take care of the own care later & be passed on to their children.
      Nope.
      This is egregious.
