Setting the Color Sequence (Advanced Interface)

I have loaded a dst file and and can see the image on the screen in a properly sized hoop - I selected Color Sequence but I am unable to select "step forward" or "step back" these buttons are greyed out so I can't tell what element will stitch first so I can assign the appropriate needle.
