They are (or were) almost unknown because the only known surviving copy of Telemann's 1735 publication of his twelve fantasias for unaccompanied viola da gamba wasn't discovered until 2015! We knew that they had been published, but no one had seen a copy of them in modern times. They have been steadily gaining in popularity ever since their rediscovery and republication. A number of complete recordings now exist.
You're amazing! I'm a cellist from Iowa and I happened to stumble upon your Metallica "One" video but I love all of your videos. I didn't even know an instrument like that existed until I saw your videos.
Thanks Turner, that's really kind of you to say so. I'm very happy to be the one "introducing" you to viola da gamba. I remember the first time I heard the instrument. It was pieces by Tobias Hume, on the radio and that's what inspired me to take up the instrument next to the cello (so you can do it too! ;-))
The piece that inspired me was La Couperin by Forqueray. I felt so grateful when I realized I was taking auditions with a piece that inspired me to play gamba in the first place. You are brilliant and a huge inspiration! I hope to meet you someday :) -Adam
Also, I'm planning to work on the first three Fantasias during my first semester in grad school so I'm so fortunate you recorded all three of them in this video!
