Hi BCP...just sitting here tonight listening to Suzanne scream her head off and I am covered in goosebumps! The music is so perfect and so creepy! It reminds of listening to CBS Mystery Theatre on the radio back when I was a kid. This is the stuff that got me hooked on Y&R over 30 years ago. Somehow we gotta get the video from these vintage episodes. Thanks again for sharing.
As I recall, this all started when Suzanne laced Katherine's chocolates which caused her to go mad and stab Suzanne which resulted her being sent to an insane asylum. At the asylum, Katherine befriends a woman and gifts her a ring. The asylum catches fire, the woman with the ring is burned beyond recognition (they assumed it was Katherine) however Katherine escaped from the fire. While this is happening, Suzanne is cozying up to Derek Thurston (Katherine's then husband) since he inherits the Chancellor mansion (which was the initial reason to lace Kay's chocolates). Kay comes back with Avengence to claim her husband and home by terrifying Suzanne through this great Ghost lighting storyline ever, and the "horror" musical score tops it off!

You know, Y&R "could" be this good again but it's going to take the right writers to do it. Remember the 70's and 80's on soaps? Every damn one of them regardless of which one you watched was in the top of their game and that's because the people (producers, writers, directors) understood this craft to PERFECTION. When these people retired or died off, their replacements just didn't/don't understand how to put all of this together anymore. ATWT crashed around 1999 and never recovered!
I so agree!The greats like Bill Bell,Agnes Nixon & Doug Marland to name a few painstakingly devoted so much to their craft to the nth degree which made for soaps.They care more about their characters and wanted to make them more watchable compared with todays cardboard characters.
You're absolutely right!! There is a LOT that could be written based on the history of the characters on the show right now and it wouldn't take a lot of effort to do it. So many great storylines from the past like this one (I vividly remember the first part of this plot where Kay was "killed" in the fire at the mental hospital). Frankly, I can't believe Y&R is still on the air (or the number one watched show) given how lousy it has been for the past 5-7 years.
Y&R used that haunting, creepy music for years during climatic scenes ~ almost made your hair stand on end, and was very effective in keeping you glued to the set to see what was going to happen next. Y&R today is a sad shell of it's former self ...not even the same show, really. Sad,,,
Y&R used to have the BEST background music for a soap opera. I think they continued using some of the 70s background music up into the 90s, cos I remember hearing them as a kid. Amazing stuff. Wish Y&R was like this nowadays. I quit watching a few years ago before I graduated high school and went off to college. But I've watched it occasionally since and it's not the same show I fell in love with. The show died when Katherine did, honestly. Jeanne Cooper was by far the best actress on that show!
I remember Y&R flirting with goth like storylines from the start of the show to about 1985 they would use spooky background scores to highlight the scenes and some storylines had a dark/scary movie like undertone.
