Here in Australia we used to have 6 Oberon boats - probably the finest diesel boat ever built. One of our boats entered SAN Francisco harbour and was asked to do it a second time because it was undetected. Perfect boat for deploying SBS / SAS.
I've been aboard this Submarine! Small by comparison of those today, but well appointed and she did her job in 1982. God bless all those who sailed in her and may we always be thankful to the Royal Navy for all the work they do to ensure we live in peace!!!
Tell you what was nicer.........in October that year Onyx was back as part of the South Atlantic Patrol...........the Royal Navy decided to use one of the captured ships for target practice.....it had been involved in the invasion of South Georgia.......it was fired at with every calibre gun....the Onyx sunk it with a torpedo.........and just for good measure.....it was depth charged on the way down..........it was Trafalgar Day 1982.
I was on South Georgia in 1982. The Santa Fe had been towed to nearer Grytviken whaling station, away from KEP. I didn’t know that HMS Onyx was involved in Op Corporate. Great respect for ‘The Trade’. I was born and grew up in Gosport. My father, a civvy scientific officer, worked at RNPL nr. RNH Haslar. Neither exist anymore. As a lad subs mesmerised me. My father worked with submariners inc. midget-sub operators a who survived WW2. Sometimes they’d come round for tea. Redoubtable men. I joined the British Army, the escape tower put me off joining the RN. 😊 ⚓️
Australia had 6 of these boats!..If they were dived and at about 4 knots, you could'nt hear them at all!..No noise signature, it was incredible, you could have one right underneath you, and..Nothing!..Russian ships going into Haiphong harbour learned all about this after the Vietnam war!..They were not happy!
MK8 Torpedo designed 1928,improved warhead 1943,burner cycle, with radial engine, can blow the stern off a battleship and cut a destroyer in half. Exocet designed 1970,ish 22 nautical mile range, can penetrate mild steel and damage the paint on a battleship! MK8 forever!
Sounds like the Bahia Buen Suceso it took part in the invasion of South Georgia then it was damaged by sea harriers near Port Howard and after the war towed out to sea and torpedoed.
@submarine1able If you remember they did build a new class of diesels in the 1990'S and they were considered the best diesel boats in the world..............a few years later they sold them to Canada.....for peanuts probably......you know just as they are doing now, with other ships of the Royal Navy.......they say it saves money, I say they lie........it is a waste of money.
You say that onyx was the only o boat deployed down there during the war. I beg to differ there was another one. Her mission was a little bit more classified. And before you go all bent out of shape if we weren't part of it how come we still got the medal for it.
Colin, perhaps your mob were loitering off Rio Gallegos, recording all the aircraft, taking-off to attack the fleet? I know, you, couldn't possibly comment ;)
She probably landed sbs on the mainland, how about she did and would have continued if the front 2 tubes weren't damaged and had a lodged torpedo in them leaking fuel slowly turning
The quietest boats...what ever sound etc deadening mods they do to nuke subs...the pump noises are a pain...whether moving or not. But can’t Russian boats go deeper due to their stronger hulls?
@1978ajax no the type 2400 cupholders were complete garbage that required major rebuilds, the RN got rid of the under the guise of an all nuclear sub fleet and sold them to the liberal canadian govt, knowing full well they were junk. One caught fire on its maiden voyage, blah blah the hatch, canadian o boats sailed all the time like that.

Yes, Ocelot was a Oberon class boat like Onyx.
She is in Chatham and open to the public.
The men of the Silent Service are the best of the navy.

For the record the RCN bought 3 O class SS then bought 1 surplus from RN
I photographed one of the Canadian boats berthed at Newcastle,North East England in the 1980s.
Actually we had 3 orginally, then bought one for a dockside trainer, bought a second and stripped it for parts, so a total of 5

I suppose every ten or twenty years one country’s tech leapfrogs the others.
It’s a great pity she ways scrapped along with Plymouth, the wankers retained that heap of rusting crap U534 though what a insult
Sorry, I do not know....but don't think they would have used a modern expensive Tigerfish torpedo(on cost grounds)....if you find out let me know.
