Bonhoeffer certainly never embraced the idea of killing Hitler as the movie depicts. In fact, while he doubtless knew about attempts to assassinate Hitler, there is no evidence that he was never actually involved in any of them.
Thankfully I'm not the only one to notice! I remember researching Bonhoeffer over 10 years ago with my daughter for a high school project. He was a man who lived a nearly to what he preached than I've ever encountered. To see his beautiful legacy used by any side in present day US political experience is disappointing at best.
Loved hearing your perspective! I read Discipleship as a part of my degree, and that led to me diving into much of his writing and teaching. Haven't seen the movie yet, but hope to! One question I'd love to hear from you on- Bonhoeffer was heavily involved in the Ecumenical Movement, with all the different denominations and divisions in the body of Christ both in America and the world, do you think ecumenical evangelism is possible? And if so, what would that take/look like?
In his Letters and Papers from prison, Bonhoeffer focuses on what he calls "religionless Christianity". This doesn't mean we get rid of denominations or traditions, but we view their boundaries as less solid. The public face of the church for Bonhoeffer is prayer and seeking justice for our neighbors. What's done in private is our worship, which can be different. There's a way of thinking about the different traditions that values them for what they brings, their unique expression, yet sees them as brothers and sisters in Jesus.
@professorlief4804 Thank you for the reply! I ask because I wrote a paper recently regarding a push for ecumenical relations, especially regarding evangelism, and a large point was that the core doctrines and dogmatics of many of the large denominations are similar, and the other doctrines aren't necessarily different as much as differently emphasized. I've really enjoyed your videos!! Thank you again!

That’s right! He was much more on the periphery than the movie suggests.

Gods taking a long time to transform the world. Can’t we speed it up?
All good things take time. But, yes, I appreciate and commiserate with the sentiment.

The Universal Church founded by Jesus, the Lord is the Catholic Church.
@@Dee-mj3pu Nope. The catholic Church, but not the Catholic church, which came into existence centuries after Christ.
Bonhoeffer would have voted for Harris despite his adamant rejection of her position on abortion.
Yes, he definitely would have voted for the war monger who openly advocated for the death of babies and sexual mutilation of children. 100%. 🥴
