Interesting video, as much as I really like Winston and his friendship with Cece(not a huge Coach fan but he has some good moments), I did feel there was something a little odd and uncomfy about how they viewed and treated Cece in this ep even if they didn't mean her any harm. In fact, Cece's my absolute fave character from the show (Jess is way up there as one of my alltime faves too though) and I do feel she deserved better in terms of how she was treated and spoken about by the guys (including Schmidt) in the earlier seasons and that she deserved more autonomy, agency and respect.

Cece best character. Don’t settle for substitutes, Swettle for swubstiswuits.

The main problem with the Art History teacher joke is that it IS 100% true. Most people in academia (I say this as an academic myself) are not happy with their lives, or better said, are not happy with how much they earn. They do teach and research, and they generally love their jobs, but they are the first ones (especially in Humanities) to tell you NOT to pursue your dreams, but to pursue money instead. At least, when we have private conversations; I do not know what they tell students

Such a great video and definitely worth the wait. I'm so bad for watching shows passively and not actively engaging and critiquing them. This series has given me a new perspective on one of my favourite comedies. Not a a bad perspective, just new. Cheers!

Great vid. I belive it was the writers intention, to raise awareness for parents "investing" in the children's education, and the high price of education that makes people feel bad for learning subjects they love but are not profitable. I guess it was a smart show in hindsight, wrapping the messages with jokes.

Love the phrase “late capitalist orthodoxy.” And I loved this. This show really doesn’t question the status quo when it comes to financial matters. It is mostly jokes-not that I don’t love New Girl, but they continue to unquestionably promote the American Dream while claiming to relate to the average middle-class millennial.

I've recently tried new girl, I'm like 20+ episodes in and the plot is good and the characters are funny but I just despise Jess, she just makes drama

No as the show progresses she gets less annoying and actually most of the action/drama come from the side characters

I'd say keep an open mind about her! I found that I ended up really liking all the characters, even ones like Jess that I found a bit annoying at first--she does have good qualities, and I think that I'd appreciate a friend as caring and attentive as her in real life!

Ironically enough, she actually made each of them better and helped them realize their potential. If she never moved in, I’m very sure the guys either would have taken a longer time to get to a place they love or never would have gotten there at all considering what was happening before she arrived. All of their energies mesh well together and it honestly took me a few rewatches to understand the impact of a personality like Jess no matter how annoying she may be.

This reminds me of that episode of Third Rock From The Sun where the aliens were spitting in customer's food if they didn't get tipped enough.
Of course they shouldn't have to survive on tips because their employers should be paying them enough. This perspective never came up in the episode though.

Given how cackhanded the show is I don't it would benefit from spelling out the moral that you shouldn't treat a friend as an investment. Also don't agree with the insinuation that being subject quantification is 'dehumanizing' or that there was a time in the past before 'late capitalism' (wishful thinking) where people weren't subject instrumental relationships.

@@PillarofGarbage I understand the point of the channel is to point out wisdom and deeper meaning in seemingly shallow pop culture but this episode is just so overbearing. You’re critiquing the show for not taking things further but that’s literally the point of new girl. It glosses on commodification but doesn’t critique it in a meaningful way because that’s the spirit of the show

This video is explicitly *not* me critiquing the show for 'not taking things further' - it's just digging into what this episode tells us about the show and the world that produced it.

@@zwhsantwnopoylos5972 but... workers owning the means of production is the definition of socialism so if that's nowhere near happening then how do we live in a semi-socialism world? Also, why are you bringing up communism? The state having more power is like the opposite of socialism. And it's also objectively untrue that the states have more power than every other time period considering most of the world used to be monarchies.

@@nerds-nonsense Workers owning the means of production is textbook communism. I ve read the manifest and every other Marx work alongside works by other socialists both modern and of the 20th century , you guys dont agree on everything but a few points are the same. Socialism cant be defined even by socialists who all have slightly different ideas of what socialism is BUT from my point of view socialist and communist agree on these: 1) Socialism is very specific point in time where the change from capitalism occurs where the state will have complete control of the economy and will steadily bring the age of communism . 2) Communism hasnt yet been achieved , a system where there is no private property and the means of production are owned by everyone equally. If you argue that socialism is against the state having more power you either 1) troll 2) lie 3) ignorant to your own people's ideology or 4 ) you are secretly a liberal capitalist at heart , in that case welcome aboard ! We ll make our money together.

@@zwhsantwnopoylos5972 owning the means of production is one aspect of communism but it's not a defining characteristic, that's socialism. If the workers own the means of production they have more power than the state who obviously rely on the chain of production functioning properly.
