you have to remember the time he came out. there was nothing like him. he had parents, congress, and even the first lady denouncing his music and trying to get it banned. there was an entire crusade against him. he opened the doors for so many people after him just based on the fights he had to fight regarding obscenity and free speech.
You'd think people would be reminded of the value of freedom of speech, all the way back to Carlin and Bruce before him. But they're right there waiting to be the new censors, forgetting their pasts.
Rap/ hip-hop has always been controversial, usually for either subject matter or for vulgarity, something the FCC was created to monitor on media airwaves. Eminem wasn’t the first on that list, but his rise to stardom absolutely propelled him into that conversation because of the reasons I mentioned. The adults tried to suppress it, and that only made us love it so much more. The fact that I grew up near Detroit certainly meant he had more exposure locally, but he also had personal issues that made headlines, like his very bitter breakup with his wife Kim, which was present in several of his early albums.
This song is about how people love controversy that Slim Shady cause, Like the first bar he said 'I've created a monster cause nobody wants to see Marshall no more, They want Shady'
But it is that much better when you know the backstories, how he was getting censored, attacked, sued, and just generally smeared. Then when they think he's gone quiet, he drops an album that's like a nuke.

Holy shit. I just learned there are people who don't remember when Eminem was pretty much the entirety of divisive issues in the world. And holy shit part 2, I just remembered that myself...a world when Eminem was our biggest problem.

I was a teen when these came out. Eminem was really controversial at first. He said things people didn’t say at the time. Called people out by name, joked about violence and homosexuality. He came from poverty and both his mom (Debbie) and his ex (Kim) came after him for money. He references his daughter (Hailey) a lot. He was silly and comedic but rarely smiled. Really interesting guy. I get most of the cultural refs bc I was in high school.:)

Mirroring all of our lives, almost. Relatability is important in music.

I always took this song as the "world being empty" without him (and his controversy's / anctics) between his 2nd and 3rd album. This was the 1st single off the Eminem show.
I guess Em was in childrens rooms all over the world. Was also my jam in school in germany. Great album, great lyrics, great humor, great video! Still banging in 2021 and lots of nostalgia for me.
They used to try to censor this man so much that when they used to play this video back in the day, they would censor out him saying MTV in the line "They try to shut me down on MTV"
Just have to say this... There's something about this man's voice that just does something to me. I remember listening to this blaring while cleaning house after dropping daughter off at school.
Dre opened a door for Em that very few could have at the time and in return Em made Dre so much money his great grandkids are set, they friends for life.
I recommend you try his song White America, talks more about how he got the controversy &his connection to Dre. I feel in love with this song (a comeback track) and think he's not given enough credit for the emotion he gets out.
He’s saying these media outlets wouldn’t be outlets without the controversial content. And he’s saying he’s more than happy to fuel the fire. Hence why he is trolling
Early Em was (at times) alot of fun and tongue in cheek. It's why he was so refreshing, besides the genius talent. At this time he was probably the most controversial artist on the planet, parents (as usual) used him as a scapegoat for why their children were being rebellious, MTV banned some of his stuff but he was huge so it ended up damaging them through reduced viewership, hence the superhero-returning element to without me.
I love how real y’all are. I grew up being a little kid in the hood and my older friends and shit were like “this white dude only famous cause he white” and shit like that. And honestly, I don’t really remember his music being played a lot in Atlanta and it definitely wasn’t being played in the black community. But nowadays it’s hilarious to me, cause I remember being a little black kid, in the hood , and I was always into comic books and drawing and shit. And was kinda nerdy cause I wasn’t aspiring to sell crack and shit, cause my older cousin was super smart and made it out the hood and got a great job and I always felt alienated for not being “black enough” And my cousin got me Eminem’s first album on my 13th birthday and I thought it was so unique and interesting and since I was a comic book nerd, I almost felt like a rebel listening to this. Cause all the gAngsta rap and shit didn’t really appeal to me, my favorite cassette that I had back then was ATLIENS by outkast and this compilation my cousin had with Dungeon Fam and these really sick beats from some white kid named Dj NO and killer mike and Andre 3000 was on it. Anyways. Just building a little context cause growing up in south Atlanta. White rapper meant WHACK as fuck. And I was surrounded by hood culture and southern rap. But I liked the quirky stuff like outkast. And I loved that first Eminem album. But got so much shit from everyone for listening to it that I ignored Eminem from that point. But now it seems like it don’t matter race or culture people seem to love this dude. And honestly. Adult me doesn’t really vibe to it. But obviously he did something that must have really clicked with white people especially. Cause I constantly see his name on top 5 lists. And I disagree heavily but his unique sound and just over all ability to be funny and entertaining and “convtroversial” is off the charts.
It's like there's a whole alternate universe out there where people (old and young) don't know anything about pop culture from even just a few years ago. I didn't have internet growing up but I feel like we knew MUCH more about our parents' pop culture when they were growing up. I'm just always amazed at stuff like this.
I’m totally shocked that they didn’t catch any of the little jabs and even didn’t say anything about the Batman and Robin theme. I love these two but I’m shocked 😯
Great reaction as always. I think long time Eminem fans who were listening to all of this stuff as it dropped are living through Lex to relive their first time hearing these songs. Just head bopping and a smile. Same as we did when it first dropped. Enough said. Y’all still haven’t reacted to No Apologies from Eminem. Maybe I did miss it tho. 🙂

I used to work at this club in Tennessee as a Bar Back where I was humping glasses to the kitchen to get washed, getting ICE for 3 stations on the main floor and one the VIP room upstairs, along with restocking all the beer for all those locations as well, Bringing out kegs every hour on to of the bottled beer. I was good friends with the DJ so I had a deal with him where he would play this song once every hour to keep me going. Was a rough job. By the end of the night the main floor was so covered with beer it took almost 2 hours every night just to get it mopped up. When we finally got done cleaning and restocking after everyone had left all the employees would go upstairs and just get hammered before going home for the night. I remember one night imparticular because it was right around the same time of the Tyson Vs. McNeely fight where I had kind of strained my back pretty hard the night before, I confided to a CoWorker that I was in a ton of pain. She said here take this. was a little orange pill, Started to feel a little better went on with my normal routine. Then I started feeling a bit whacked. So at the end of the night I started doing some shots and I woke up in the ditch in front of my cousins' house. Turns out she had given me Extacy and well I mixed it without knowing what it was with a lot of Whiskey. This is what this song makes me think of.
I can't believe Brad heard it but never seen the video! My only exposure to Eminem back then was MTV, and this was the most played video, I'm pretty sure... at least when I was watching. :D And I'm Hungarian and was born in 1990. Not exactly Eminem's target audience. :D
A couple songs you may want to check out is cold wind blows, going through changes, no love or 25 to life. Those are great songs from the recovery album
the song makes fun about shows , movies , celebrities and songs of that time and i think its about us who cant live without such entertainment...cant live without eminem because we love the controversy
Back in the day was the 70's for me. Lex with the head tilt and "Back in what day?" Classic. It finally struck me like a bolt of lightening. You two remind me of George Burns and Gracie Allen.
He's the original Tom MacDonald , but more anti- republican, because of dealing with censorship and whatnot, during the Bush/Cheney era. If he began his career now-- he would undoubtedly share Tom's stances. Imo. Great reaction as always, y'all!!
Every time I watch someone react to this I wonder if people are gonna catch that after na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na he says Fix your bent antenna, tune it in, and then I'm gonna". I'm rooting for you guys on this one
Wow, my work is never done around here. So back in the day when rap was becoming more and more popular, politicians and censors were freaking out about the lyrics. The FCC came down hard on radio stations and record labels for explicit lyrics and at some point MTV banned Eminem songs from their music video TV channel. Sooooooo this song was Eminem's answer to all of those who censored his music. Now, if I have to explain what MTV was, my head will explode.
Eminem credits Dre with saving his life by pull him out if his situation so I'd assume they're good friends and all the smack talk about Dre is just jokes and Dre knows that.
That third verse was taking shots at people who had said something about him. Chris Kirkpatrick from *NSYNC (I think), Limp Biscuit, and this techno music guy named Mobi. It’s so weird to see people who don’t really know much about Eminem, mainly bc right after I started getting into rap was when the Marshall mathers LP dropped and he blew up. So my whole middle school / high school years were all Eminem. But it’s also cool seeing people who don’t already know it all or heard it all and have basically no presuppositions coming into his music.
The controversy stems back from Shug Knight who had Death Row Records back then and wanted to sign Eminem but Dr. Dre who was also with Aftermath Entertainment swooped in and listened to Em and signed him up on the spot. Dre and Em then signed 50 Cent to the label and are all best friends still to this day.
i remember when this album first came out in the UK and because of the controversy surrounding Eminem at the time you could hardly get hold of his album and the radio dared to never play any of his songs. I actually had to get a transferred CD copy from my neighbours son in law to hear this track haha and half the songs corrupted haha
Every scene in there has a meaning yall. The court scene with the frizzy hair chick was hos mom. They had a lawsuit her name is debbie and he threw judge Judy in that one. Him and moby and limp biscuit had a beef, they in there too.

"What day?" Hahaha
I can't believe Brad heard it but never seen the video! My only exposure to Eminem back then was MTV, and this was the most played video, I'm pretty sure... at least when I was watching. :D And I'm Hungarian and was born in 1990. Not exactly Eminem's target audience. :D
This song was way ahead of its time!!
I'm getting old. Because this song feels like 15 minutes ago. 😂
This is probably my 14 yo and my favorite song to dance to on Just Dance. It’s got such a bouncy beat
Jesus Christ I think im a stan... I can't stop watching your videos and I gotta work in a few hours
Back in the day was the 70's for me. Lex with the head tilt and "Back in what day?" Classic. It finally struck me like a bolt of lightening. You two remind me of George Burns and Gracie Allen.
oh dam lex grew up like me, i was a pastors son and wasnt allowed the "wordly" until late high school
Rap god Eminem, maybe in some 1000 years or something another rap god will appear.
He's the original Tom MacDonald , but more anti- republican, because of dealing with censorship and whatnot, during the Bush/Cheney era. If he began his career now-- he would undoubtedly share Tom's stances. Imo. Great reaction as always, y'all!!
Every time I watch someone react to this I wonder if people are gonna catch that after na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na he says
Fix your bent antenna, tune it in, and then I'm gonna". I'm rooting for you guys on this one
even though i know it, still till this day i still cant hear it lol
The rhymes within rhymes are out of control.
I love the contrast of dre looking absolutely fly and shady dressed in a skintight Robin cosplay
AND Em is obsessed with Comics!!!!!!! Which is what makes it so funny too
That third verse was taking shots at people who had said something about him.
Love Dre in this video. Eminem is one of a kind, facts. ❤️🎼😎🔥
Love this one... Beats hard the video is hilarious
The kid that is sitting down with the blonde hair in the tv show part is eminems little brother Nate
old eminem who enter in the history of rap,the best,i like him.😀
i remember when this album first came out in the UK and because of the controversy surrounding Eminem at the time you could hardly get hold of his album and the radio dared to never play any of his songs.
This whole video is just Dre dealing with Em for all these years... ahaha!
comedy genious " Back in the day"...... Quizzical look...... "What Day" ?? Hilarious 🙂
Calling a song from 2002 old school makes me feel really, really old. And I'm just 39...
Without Me was the traditional goofy lead single for his album The Eminem Show.
