Beautiful performance. I feel for the musicians, though, because it was obviously a very cold day (evening, or night), going by the fact the boys and the male soloists have their coats on, and the male soloist nearest the camera has gloves on too. This is one of my favourite songs, the Kronungsmesse is one of my favourite compositions.
That performance with the VBC - boy soloist Michael Devine was recorded in about 1998. Since a lot of years he is (is still ?) the choir master of an adult choir in the USA. He had also a FB-account. But I can´t find the account any more ?
Soloist Michael Devine in about 1998. Michael Devine in the meantime is director of an adult choir in the US. By the way: That recording first was uploaded at YT by a friend from the Netherlands. The friend (orion8352) closed his channel...I don´t know why.
Dear responsibles there in Strasbourg, hearing the finally "disturbed" sound of the recording I think that the video was downloaded from the channel of orion8352 ? Never mind !
Itis probably because the weather at the time was very cold, which can be detrimental to singers, and many choirs try to avoid singing outdoors or in cold buildings (such as cathedrals which are not known for having insulation or modern heating) during cold weather, as i have stated in a comment earlier that they are wearing jackets over their sailor suits (choir uniform) and some are wearing gloves too. cold weather can restrict the vocals (larynx) and make it hard to draw large breaths and hold breaths for long, so yes, their breathing is a bit shorter than would be normal.
Superb God-given voices and performance!
This genius of interpretation has slamed the door on this version . Superior.
Heavenly joyful glory to God

Similar to his name, his voice was divine coming from above.
