  • Autodesk make tools for coal mining and oil drilling, and are co-responsible for the destruction of planet earth, so reports Bloomberg after interviewing a climate activist who apparently has a serious axe to grind with Autodesk, but is this a load of tripe? Let's take a look see.

    *there's some dead space at the end of the video which is currently being trimmed, will remove this text following the cut
    Autodesk removed the customer success story years ago, and the provided images on Autodesk Earth are mostly unreadable. However I found an archived copy of this PDF after filming, and they do elaborate a bit further on the involvement of Inventor and training services etc but it doesn't change the fact that this is still entirely limited to the scope of designing spare parts. Which in itself is still only a very small part of "maintaining" the vehicles operation.
    I also described Formula 1 as being one of the most polluting sports going, however, the collective emmisions of all 20 cars over the course of a full season is actually less than a single trans-atlantic flight. But still, the point still stands.
    To be clear, I've nothing against the activist and this isn't intended as an attack of any form, but a lot of the language used and actions taken via Autodesk Earth are simply stupid. I fully support the need for climate change action, but putting the spotlight onto Autodesk in this way is not the right way to go about it. They will be just one of hundreds if not thousands of third party suppliers who have services, software, hardware or tools used within that mine. Removing Autodesk from that equation would not terminate or even hinder the mines operation.

    Everyone who pays taxes is also to blame, because they make the roads and public transport possible, with which the oil and coal workers come to work. The same with the power lines etc...
    It's not because Autodesk sells their software, it's because the general public/politics are probably doing too little about CO2 emissions.
    It is important to raise awareness here, but there is not the ONE to blame.

    I wonder how much CO2 these companies are producing when using tools not designed by Autodesk, or any other design software companies. From a different perspective, Autodesk might be contributing to the reduction of CO2 through more well-designed, efficient tools and machineries.

    Honestly Autodesk is probably less complicit than the numerous other CAD systems used out there for less legitimate companies that don't worry as much about the environment either. I also don't get why there's this though that companies can't change. My employer has been involved in the natural gas industry for decades but if they were stigmatized because of that then we wouldn't be able to continue developing the green energy sources we are currently working on ie. hydrogen as a fuel source. This kind of witch hunt is hurtful to everyone.

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same with RWE, they are now switching/increasing their operations in renewable energy sources but without doing what they're doing now, they wouldn't be able to fund that transition, and if they just stopped all together then entire countries would go into crisis because we all mostly still drive cars with combustion engines and all the countless other reasons that we rely on it

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think Autodesk provide their software on such a selective basis, they will provide to whomever shows an interest and is willing to pay providing it isn't illegal activities or against any treaties or international law. And tbh I don't think there's anything to offset, they don't inherit the environmental impact of their customers who are totally unrelated legal entities.

    Everytime I see something posted by one of these green campaigners, it makes me less inclined to support them. I do beleive we need to make changes to work towards a more sustainable future, but the key work is future, you can't just flick a switch and change everything overnight, things take time to develop, implement, and wind down of older systems. If these people really want to help the enviroment, then they need to help support and fund those industries that are developing the technologies that will change things, rather than targeting any industry they deam responsible.

    😅 The thumbnail is as click-baity and misleading as the "activist's" campaign itself. Great insight and content of the video though. I'd argue that the campaign has a sore spot with Autodesk. Wonder where it stems from? (Its not just organically considered)...
