Great review! I just saw this movie last night and was a little confused about the theme but I think your point about the contrast between the lies they tell their families and the honesty they have in the band really helped. If you liked the subdued style of this movie, you have to check out my personal favorite movie "Liz and the Bluebird" which is made by much of the same staff (including director naoko yamada and composer kensuke ushio). It's technically a spinoff of a tv anime series, but it works great as a standalone. It's about two friends in high school concert band facing the possibility of going to different colleges while also working on a duet they have to play for the band which has a lot of parallels to their friendship. The entire movie takes place inside the school which I think is a really interesting choice as it narrows the scope of the movie and puts all of the focus on the two leads.

I knew i wasn't insane for thinking the "seeing colors" thing was real😭 but i never would've remembered Synesthesia
I really like how religion and particularly, Totsuko's relationship with religion is portrayed.
