The carbon versions, as well as being stiffer than the regular Supermatics, will be lighter too (though probably still heavier than a normal strap binding like your Burtons).
I switched to Flow bindings and although it is a bit of inconvenience to loosen and tighten at the bottom and top of the run it is no where as inconvenient as the floppy binding strap. Also the Flow's have really good padding under the foot and are comfortable all day long. The best feature of the Flows though is being able to keep up with all the ski babes =)
Floppy strap? On the supermatics? That middle strap isn't floppy at all. It's not remotely noticeable, you just have it so it's not quite as tight as the normal toe and heel bindings. It's locked to both of the other straps so it doesn't move at all, all it does is keep them oriented correctly so they always sit on the right part of your boot. They are incredibly smooth to use, I can put an and remove my foot with ease while moving at a decent clip.
The thing that puts me off is the CRAZY weight. The new EST Step On weight is only 1480g (size medium) for BOTH bindings. That is almost half the weight 🤦♂ I ride the Burton Mystery HomeTown Hero and the Capita Mega Death which are both unbelievably light. Adding all that extra weight in a pair of bindings just doesn’t make sense to me personally. Each to their own though, if they work for a rider then they are the best binding for that rider. I just like to keep weight down as much as possible. The new EST Genesis Step On are for the Mystery HTH and the ReFlex Carbon X on the Mega Death with Nitro Darkseid boots are an amazing combination! (not a fan of the Photon/Ion Step On strap). Again no criticism of the Supermatics, if weight is not an issue then they might be perfect.
I am normally trying to reduce weight, but I ended up with a pair of cheap “broken” supermatics (replaced one part) for use at a snow dome where I am constantly in and out of the bindings. I was shocked that I didn’t really care about the extra weight. It really didn’t make much difference to me. They don’t feel like an 8 out of 10 flex though. They felt pretty flexible compared to my usual bindings.
Hey! Just received my supermatics, I got them in XL and my boot is 10,5 (street shoes 11) because I saw many that had issues with 10,5 in L. But when just testing them on the floor, it seems that I have a bunch of spare room in the with, and also that the bindings are quite long. What size of boot did you try them with and what size of bindings did you have? And did you have any problem with them feeling loose?
Thank you for the great content. I’m looking to get a board that was like the burton uninc. Can you review the signal UN - YUKI PRO or the yes GREATS UNINC or STANDARD UNINC.
Ex flow binding rider here and that, "if you have to tighten with ratchets...might as well get some regular bindings", I don't think that's true. You might only tighten a couple clicks or let off some clicks for comfort and fine tuneing. Chucking my boots in Flows was still way quicker and easier than strapping into my current regular bindings. As I got older I just found for the Flow model year I had, the high-back was too rigid and I wanted to try an all around flexier binding you can only really get with regular strap-in. Now I'm older still, turns out I'm the one who's now inflexible, and I want a step-in again 😆
The Cartels do a great all around job, there isn't much that they don't do well for a regular strap binding. If the Supermatics were a bit lighter then I would definitely ride them instead. I bet Supermatics are going to end up quite popular though, most people aren't going to complain or notice the weight as much as I do.
So happy to see a review. Been missing the content.
great to have you back Lachy!
Very good review. Straight to the point, and sounds honest. Bravo. Have you used CLEW?
Welcome back brotha
Welcome back!
honestly I would love the numbering on the straps on my regular bindings so I stop overtightening for the first few runs 😅

@@Negentropy369 the floppy strap is a reference to traditional sit on your ass bindings.
super heavy binding, went back to the Union Force after a season

I could not find righ spot between drop in setup and tighthness of straps. So my foot was somehow loose always. Not for me.

Respect!
I love my skate tech Jones bindings, but I am seriously considering getting a set of these for my back foot on powder days... 🤔

👀 How do you like that Valhalla tho????

When would you choose to ride the Cartels over this and vice versa?

I like the idea but the weight is what turned me away from these. Hopefully in the future they can make lighter versions.
They came out with carbon ones
I haven't seen them in person yet so can't lock it in, but I am told the carbon ones have almost the same weight, just stiffer.
