  • If Titanic had struck the iceberg astern, would this have been the sinking scenario?
    With the support from living relatives of Titanic's passengers and crew, Friends of Titanic Lighthouse aim to help restore this forgotten treasure and create a new National Historic Landmark to honor the 1,496 souls who perished when RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912.

    That would have been even worse because the engines and power generators were located in the stern. Those would have been knocked out first, leaving the ship without lights or able to call for help.

      Yes and also the ship's center of mass is further to the stern because the steam engines. It would accelerate the sinking even more.

    It’s a bit trippy to look at. So use to hear going down by head.
    A big reason she broke at 23 degrees during the actual sinking is because her heavy engines were a counterbalance of the sea water coming in. Had it been like this
    scenario, the ship would have sank much faster, and the angle of the rising bow would have had a very high angle towards the end. It’s also why she was relatively stable right until the her final plunge in real life.
    Additionally, if she had gone down aft, the power would have gone out right away. (Many more lives lost if not all hands). Also I don’t know if she would have broke in two had she gone down aft. Very interesting to think about.

    I’ve have a theory, if the titanic sank with the bow first, it stayed intact and the stern a mess, however if it sank stern first, the stern would be intact and the bow a mess.

      This is a late reply yes, but this actually makes sense! The reason the stern is the way it is now is because the bow already was completely flooded so it went down intact, but the stern had a good amount of air still in the hull, causing it to implode on itself, ripping apart. So vice versa is probably the same

    • @foskco87
      @foskco87 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyderSirRyder That is a possibility for sure, but to look at it another way... the bow is much more streamlined and aerodynamic, therefor as it sinks to the bottom it finds a fixed, steady nose down position, meaning not a lot of turbulence or debris getting ripped off and the tip of the bow would strike the bottom first, which is a very strong part of the ship being as it's basically an arch shape. The stern is way less aerodynamic and probably would spiral around while sinking, causing a lot more force and turbulence on it, ripping pieces off and it probably would not strike the bottom as straight on as the bow. It's hard to say what the residual air inside would have done to the ship. Would it have made it so the bow wouldn't sink nose down, being as air would have all gotten pushed to the front making it more buoyant? Also it's not like the ship was perfectly sealed like a submarine... there were plenty of cracks, windows, doors and other openings for air to get pushed out of as it sank, so it's not clear to me that it would have necessarily imploded. Hard to say.

    If it actually sank this Way then the stern wouldn’t look messed up While the bow would. because that during the sinking alot of airpockets formed inside the stern due to it not being under water meanwhile the bow had alot of time to fill up with water so there wasn’t any airpockets inside the bow. So when the stern went underwater in an alarming rate the airpockets went under a whole lot of pressure causing Them to implode which made the stern turn into the mangled mess we know today. But if it sank this Way then the bow would have imploded and boy i wonder What that would have looked like.

    • @foskco87
      @foskco87 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the air pockets were not perfectly sealed like a submarine. There were cracks, windows, doors, and other openings for the air to have gotten pushed out of as the pressure increased. I dont think it's a guarantee that it would have/did implode. I personally think a big part of the stern being so destroyed was because it didn't sink in a fixed, streamlined nose-down position like the bow. It likely spiraled and twisted around as it sank causing much of it to rip apart... and the more it began to rip apart, the less aerodynamic and structurally sound it would have been causing even more damage like a snowballing effect, and then it probably didnt strike the sea floor as evenly as the bow did. Just a thought.

    • @BarrelofBurger9554
      @BarrelofBurger9554 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@foskco87 yeah that Also could be a good reason. But most of those cracks were mostly really small so the huge airpockets didn’t have enough time to escape
