Candling Remaining Quail Eggs and Opening the Ones That Didn't Develop

  • Hello everyone!! We are on Day 24 of our Quail hatch and I believe most if not all that are going to hatch have done so already. So I feel at this point it's ok to open up the incubator and take a closer look at what's going on in the remaining eggs.
I purchased the cutest, tiniest flashlight that works perfectly for candling quail eggs-
    www.amazon.com...
I went ahead and removed the egg shells from all the eggs that successfully hatched, then I candled each egg that has not hatched yet.
I removed all the eggs that appear empty or dead and put all the eggs that look to have a chick developed back in. I'm thinking I will leave them until day 30 now just because of the two stragglers we've had so far. I don't expect these to hatch but it would be a welcome surprise if they do. They have good veining and look to have developed just fine to hatch day so there is always a possibility they are just running late on their due date.
I did go ahead and open the eggs that appeared empty, most just had a scrambled up egg yolk, which is very normal with shipped eggs. One had a chick that appeared to have developed to about day 7 and two of the eggs had perfectly formed egg yolks that weren't scrambled at all, but for whatever reason they just didn't even begin development.
It isn't easy opening up the eggs and looking inside to see what went wrong but it is helpful in learning how to improve hatch rates. I'm actually really happy with the hatch rate we've had so far out of this batch.
With the regular coturnix we had 6 out of 12 hatch which gives us a 50% hatch rate (that's pretty good with shipped eggs)
With the celadon we had 3 out of 12 which gives us a 25% hatch rate (not the best but I'm still just happy those little ones hatched)
I've left 6 celadon and 1 regular coturnix in the incubator, again I don't expect them to hatch but it's not hurting anything to just leave them in the incubator for another 4-5 days just to see if anything will happen.

Of the eggs put back in the incubator, how many hatched and how many days late? Was it only those three in the last box? Out of how many?
