The jump between console generations before that were pretty noticable and drastic, in terms of gameplay depths and graphic fidelity. But the jump from 360/PS3 - XboxOne/PS4 was way less noticable. Even more so with the most recent jump from One/PS4 to PS5/SeriesX/S And the industry as a whole is not doing so good. At least as a consumer. The big gaming companies are making more $$$ then ever.. But we don't get those old AA games anymore.. (by "AA" I mean, "AA" instead of "AAA" big budget games. Remember those"middle a' the road" games like Shellshock, Kane and Lynch, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Soldier of Fortune, Freedom Fighters, Rouge Trooper etc. etc. too many good ones!) Video games are so expensive to develop nowdays, that companies don't take risks. So those kind of games are just gone... People mention indies, but I've never found one that didn't feel like an "indie", if that makes sense.. not hating on em, but I haven't really enjoyed too many indie titles myself. Live service games are not cool either. Basically in a few years, games like "The Division" will be unplayable, because you won't be able to connect to the servers once the Devs decide to shut them down. Microtransactions are one thing.. but some games communities literally feed off and seemingly like being feed new skins (for real money!) and new skins only.. Not a big expansion pack, ala TBoGT. Or Undead Nightmare. Hell, even map packs like all the old Call of Duty and Halo games used to release were a far better sell.. A small 10.00$ - 25.00$ fee and you got some new maps and a gun here or there. It seemed a fair trade.. But for the newer modern games. Nope. Just skins. Don't get me wrong. I like skins, nothing wrong with them. But as the only new content releasing?.. I could on and on.. (as you can clearly see haha, sorry for that.) and theres so many damn reasons my beloved Vidya games are becoming soulless, heartless and utterly uninspired. The DDay scene Ant was talking about is from Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, which came out in 2002, back when my balls had barely just dropped. Nearly 20 years later, it's still the single best video game level I've ever played. It was basically Private Ryan Simulator now that I think of it.
Amen. My dad is an old school southerner but was always impressed by the arts. He thought graphics in video games were as good as anyone can make it. Meaning the polygons and textures of DK64 he thought were cool. Hated most of them and I don’t blame him. “Man I don’t mind tellin ya this is some AWFUL bullshit my dad right before he fell asleep during the first Pokémon movie. But COD seeing the intros and knowing the set pieces, the players, the conflicts etc, said “this might be one of the coolest things ever”! It’s always great as a kid when your dad is interested in something new that you like. I tried to play Metro Exodus last year cause I loved Metro 2033/Redux, but I came home from work after having dealt with alot of work shit, had my ex on my ass over something, and I just could not immerse myself in the game cause I got frustrated while playing on the hardest difficulty 🤣 and there was just too much going on, too much stress, I don't need that shit. Patrice!!! Thank you!!! Resident Evil to me was the GRANDMASTER of horror when I was growing up. I couldn’t play it as a kid, it scared me so much. I remember my neighbor playing the first one, and how creepy it was to have those damn Cerberus dogs jump out the window at you in that hallway in the beginning. BUT THE FIRST GIANT SCARE I got from Resident Evil was from Resident Evil 2. When I was around 8 years old, you go into the Kendo Gunshop, and he locks the doors and tells you, “You’re safe.” As soon as you go to the next room, four zombies come break through the glass and eat him! I had to turn the game off, I was so petrified, I could not play Resident Evil for years. Now, as a 29 year old man, I have beaten every single Resident Evil game, and it’s my favorite series of all time…. All because of how much that memory had a lasting impact on me. Between anything Rockstar makes and Resident Evil…. I’m the biggest fans of those series. So in the end, I cannot thank Capcom enough for scaring me because they’re my favorite games of all time now! I like Silent Hill, too, but… I think Resident Evil is the originator. Remember being a kid and being scared of the dark? I didn’t think of Pyramind Head, I always thought a zombie was going to attack me.

I'd love a new super hero video game series, that's story/adventure centric (i.e. not just a fighting game with a "story mode"), and actually shapes the game mechanics around that characters abilities. The only ones like that I can think of that completely nail it are NES Batman, And Spiderman 2 (2004). The rest feel like what they are, a game engine designed for something completely different, repackaged as a "superhero" game.
