    You have to give Xiegu credit - they are doing some great stuff. YES they have had some early issues, YES they are not as polished as the big 3, but you know what, their current generation of rigs are becoming very very good. The X6100, with ongoing support and new features coming is a fantastic portable rig (Please keep developing the firmware for this one Xiegu!). The G90 punches well above it's weight too. I am personally excited to see what they keep doing. And I'm happy to buy them and play with them, despite the early release bugs that are usually common. It's great times for QRP ham radio fans!

    Thank you, Jason! I was hoping you would do this review since I saw it last week for putting a $1 on a preorder. Data modes are great, but I already have a X6100. Will be good to see in person!

    I have a XIEGU G90. Love the radio. I bought the amp and the tuner that goes with it and everything works for what I need .

    Got the 703 plus. My other rigs except one are Icoms. Do not need another product line in my mix.

    And Yaesu is taking their sweet time with creating a sdr qrp radio....hey at least we have the 818nd.

    IDK, if I am still going to have to use an external module to connect to the computer I may as well stick with the G90. This looks a bit small to have an onboard battery too.

    But X's presentation in terms of what the rig looks like is going. Xneeds to look at the all mode 6/2/.70m
    Rigs Y made about 30 years ago. (Single band each). Had antennae ports on both the front and the back. If I remember correctly, the front port was BNC.

    If the price is right i will pick one of these up. I just got a QDX so my needs for qrp digital are limited

    I'm going to look at this one closely. The end protectors of knobs and the rounded body are nice touches. I have a G-90 and that baby can bark! I'm still holding out hope for a more modernized G-90, that combines the GSOC into the G-90 body. Looking at this radio, I'm thinking Xiegu is getting closer to the Yeasu FT 818! Hope it has an internal tuner🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

    Jason do you think it is worth selling the FT-817ND to get one? I don't really use the 6 meters and above too much on mine.

    • @mostlypostie1
      @mostlypostie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can answer that. (I have an 818 too, and a heap of other rigs, including a 705.) Even if you only use HF, the short answer, in general is NO. Not because there is anything 'wrong' with this new G106 rig (not that anyone knows yet anyway), but the 818 is a very solid QRP rig. In general, there is no real benefit in selling the 818 to get a G106. There would only be two things the G106 'MIGHT' do that the 818 doesn't (we don't know for sure yet), and these would be a basic bandscope, and an internal antenna tuner. (Again, we don't know if the G106 has these or not yet). What I'll be doing, is getting a G106 as well. It will be a cheap, and hopefully fun rig. (And he who dies with most QRP rigs wins) :)

      @@mostlypostie1 There is the scenario where I only want/can afford one at a time. Sorry I left that part out. I'm going to consider it just because an SDR is more versatile and Yaesu has had all this time to come up with something better in a QRP rig. Nada so far. The 705 is not even on my radar due to cost.

    • @mostlypostie1
      @mostlypostie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@W4TRI All good - that being the case, you can still do more things with the 817/818. I would stay with what you have now personally.

    Why no full ham bands like 80/40

  • @willieb6529
    @willieb6529 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    it is basically a rebadged G1M w/WFM BCB receive, a few extra bands, but little else - just take a look at the GUI/Display vs the G1M - same thing... the G1M had firmware 1.07 and this soon-to-be-orphaned rig has a firmware of 1.08... recycled software...

    Will not buy any of these transceivers on initial release, due to flaky firmware, or worse, other issues in the initial circuity. I would wait 6-12 months until after the bugs worked out. They aren't paying me to be a beta tester.

    • @charlescc1000
      @charlescc1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed however also good to note that it seems like Xiegu has been making fairly decent radios given their competitive prices. So yes sometimes some issues on the front end, but IIRC they do their best to work them out.
      I don’t have one yet but have really been eying the G90 / X5105 for QRP SOTA hiking

      That was my first assay on Xiegu: “You too can be a beta tester.” Ain’t been far off since. Two G90s, one X5105. Ok stuff but not real support & absolutely no local (non-return-to-China) repair or help. Makes it easy to stick with Icom. ;-)
