*Final Fantasy 6 is out here is our review* It's the last iconic RPG from the SNES days, but is it worth that hefty price tag? Our app guy (and noted Final Fantasy veteran) Joseph Hindy takes a closer look in this review. Watch the review below or read it here: goo.gl/qLLwso
Christopher Norulak *2 decade old game. And considering that it's longer, better, and has more content than > 95% of Android games, the price isn't horrifying. It's bad yeah, but not like ungodly awful.
There is absolutely no excuse for the "always have to be connected to the internet" feature. If I buy a game, I want to be able to play the game, whether I have internet or not. Extremely poor show from square enix.
Personally, I like the new graphics... but the best FF ever deserves much much more than this. Square's treatment of FF VI is beyond my comprehension. Damn them.
Talk about a major deal breaker on such a great SINGLE PLAYER ONLY game! I can't imagine if Betrayal at Krondor, another fantastic RPG, was released on the android (with CD music and sounds, of course!) and had THAT feature. >_
They're too way bright. They look clean, but, they look like they almost fade with the background depending on the brightness. Some look awesome, most look way too bright.
You lost me as soon as you said "improved graphics." I see improved resolution, but worse graphics. The whole game looks like they made a high-res version of each component and called it a day without checking to see if the result was aesthetically coherent or pleasing.
I have FF6 for the GBA but I was still thinking about getting it for Android. It is nice to have good games on your phone because it's the one device you always have in you. You can become use to the control lag, but I could never ever be bothered to waste my time with games that requires an Internet connection to play. What a stupid waste of time when the game it self is single player. My FF6 on GBA wasn't cheap either so I'm glad I have a reason to never bother with this android port.
Android Authority Keep in mind as well: for those of us running KitKat, it CANNOT be used on the Android RunTime. Of course, SE mentions this in the Play Store, but it has to be re-iterated (as is the case with nearly all of their games).
Does this version include the extra content from the GBA version, and does it fix any of the many, many bugs in the other versions such as the evade bug?
You have to have internet access to even play it? I was thinking about getting it for an upcomming road trip but because smart phone internet gets spotty in rural places that's a no go.
it's not just the sprites. the town and world maps, spell animations, summon animations, and literally every other graphical piece of this game has been revamped. The sprites are a little lame but everything else is gorgeous.
Half agree the main characters, people in villages etc look really bad but everything else looks better, it would have been great if they updated them to look like there portraits pictures.
I was kinda considering it for the new graphics. But I didn't know you was REQUIRED to be online to play this. Screw that. Emulation, here I come...again!
+Bryan Willis I have no idea what you're on about. I've always been able to play this without being online. Stop fear mongering. Of course, I pirated the game, so maybe there's no DRM on the version I have.
EQOAnostalgia Well that's sadly the case when it comes to games. The people who actually pay for them get screwed over by the DRM, meanwhile it has absolutely no effect on the people who pirate it. So really what's the point of even implementing DRM? I got screwed over similarly when I bought Terraria. First game I actually paid for since 1998, and I wound up getting locked out of my Steam account. So I was unable to play the game I actually paid money for. Of course, this forced me to end up pirating it anyway. Needless to say, I learned my lesson about paying for games. lol
good review.. i play this between my tablet and my phone using the cloud saving which is nice even though you have to manually upload or download the save.
The control issue is not a delay in the movement, or a lag issue, its the way the walking is designed in ff6. Movement is based on a square grid, so once you press right, the character has to move all the way to the next square before they can take another movement command. Its designed that way, and the same way in all the final fantasies pre-7.
Relm and Gau are practically the same in ability, except Gau can call on any monster ability he learned, in berserk status. Relm sketches and mimics the monster, and it varies, from her punching, slapping with her paintbrush to casting strong spells for free...Don't get me start on Umaro...
Final Fantasy VI is one of the best games of all time. That being said, I freaking hate the new art style, especially the character sprites. I would not call these graphics an improvement at all. Sure, they're not pixelated anymore, but now they're just ugly as hell and they lack both heart and personality.
What? "Improved Graphics" ? These aren't "improved" simply because they are higher resolution. Honestly, main characters' sprites looks like it was done by amateurs. The shapes are passable but color and contrast are way off! And let's not talk about the nav backgrounds (fight backgrounds are fair)... ouch... Just compare to any SNES screenshot and you'll understand.
The town maps, world maps, summons, magic animations, town icons (on the world map), enemy icons, and others are all improved either by improved resolution or wholly new designs. It's not just the characters.
Some areas might be only slightly improved for the untrained eye but the overall package is downright unattractive and feels like it was rushed if you have mere knowledge of pixelart and 2D art in general. If you want to see a Final Fantasy port done by professionals, look at Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for PSP. This is how it should be done.
Insulting me with your untrained eye remark is a poor way of conducting a conversation. I realize this is the internet and all, but there's no reason to be disrespectful. Also, comparing a PSP (a gaming platform) to Android (a telephone platform) is asinine. Never mind that the FF4 remake was for the 20th anniversary of the entire series and, thus, was given more attention, money, and time than the FF6 remake, but keep in mind that the same guy produced both of these games and the developers of this game overlooked the other company while they developed FF4 for the PSP. So it was the same group of developers that were ultimately responsible for both releases. Another studio just did the leg work on the other one. Considering that they went from 4:3 and standard defintion to 16:9 and high definition (which automatically requires redrawing freaking everything, as even the most basic "untrained eyes' in digital art know, you can't just resize the image) and to a platform capable of exponentially more colors, and considering they were doing this themselves instead of telling another studio what to do, everything aside from the character sprites is a positive improvement from the original game.
Well, sorry my friend, didn't mean to be insulting but that remark still bear truth. No matter the reasons behind development, this port doesn't render justice to the masterpiece this game was. Now to think of it's, I realize that's why I quitted the videogame industry: managers don't give a shit about quality, experience and authenticity. All that matters now is money and release date. Sorry again.
_this port doesn't render justice to the masterpiece this game was_ I openly agree with that. They could've done a lot more with it. I was just on the standpoint that they could've done a lot less with it too. I'm learning video game development as kind of a hobby. Okay its weirder now it has done a check like 3 times now, so it is defintely there. I've tried seeing if it does it because the application was fully closed or left in the background, but still lots of times when I'm offline it won't give me the error screen. Still not sure if it's an amount of time since it last verified? It's a pity its there, but not too intrusive it seems. Anyhoo, still enjoying the hell out of it, man the music still hits me right in the nostalgia button :3
Hiya, yes and no it kind of fall screen just thin yellow wood like lines on the left and right of the screen. But its not noticable when you start playing.
I wish they would put Both of these back on the android store 5 and 6 i dont care about the graphics just put them back i want ALL of the Bonus Content!!!!! EX Dungeons Etc
There's no cloud save? I swear I startedthis android version of ff6 on my old phone and continued it with my new phone after logging into my Google acct and downloading the game again. I recall loading my old save and not having to start over. This was a year ago so my memory could be mistaken
does the opera scene finally have vocals rather than "aaahs"? xD darn I really this game. I din expect they would redo the sprites, unlike chrono trigger. There will be always + and - but I like how they did it to this.
ok so on my iPhone, I don't have to have wifi to play this game, I can play it anytime anywhere. next, I would HATE, to see this game get a 3D make over on a DS port. I loved the story of 3 and 4, but the DS version of those games really made it an eyesore for me. idk what it is, maybe it just takes it out of my imagination, but 6, being one of if not the BEST story and gameplay FF of all times, would only be destroyed with a 3d Ds remake.
The simple fact that you have to be online is why buying this game is not worth it. I play the gba version through emulation and enjoy the game just as much.
Nub Smoo It's the shitty DS version of 4 though, and not the awesome PSP Complete Collection. And of course, 3 only HAS a shitty DS version so...yeah, they've basically ported the two worst versions to Steam.
Does anyone know where the save files are located. As you know there are no cloud saves and well switching devices means losings saves unless I can transfer them...
So why did SE decide not to make this game 3D? Why should I buy this for $15 when I can just play the rom? The game is hardly enhanced with that filter they've put over everything.
Aptoide get it free and don't need internet connection.. Original graphics but, controls are better, amd, you can save anywhere don't need the save points
+Brian Taylor I got an ipega 9021 :) it's alright for play just sometimes annoying when it won't connect right away or when you stop to take a break and come back to it you'll need to unpair then pair again. other than that I find that controller comfortable to use and lets you play for hours.
Well 16 bugs for a buggy game is still much There are too many problems You cant recruit Shadow in Kohlingen or else the game freezes And I have a bug which will always mess ul the opera scene So i cant even get further than that
wowowow, you can't play the game offline!?! Im playing ff5 on android right now and it doesn't make me do that, why would they ever do this!?!? That kills my desire and ability to play the game.
***** well it's a tough thing to do. If you make offline play possible, everyone's just going to steal it (after all, $16.99 is a lot of money for an app). Frankly I paid for it (I love the game and didn't mind so much) but I guess that's the only way for now to keep the pirates at bay eh?
Joseph Hindy It's a dumb move hurting the buyers without touching pirates. I wanted to buy it till I watched this video a few minutes ago. Now i will get myself an emulator.
hey guys my copy of this game gives me infinite gold and i can't play it properly with infinite gold, i might as well activate a bunch of cheats.... does anyone know how to fix this?
-Most of the backgrounds aren't redone at all -The enemy sprites do not have the excellent quality of the FFV android release -Character sprites are terribe -Half of the character's bodies are cut off when in magitek armor -tile clipping everywhere -severly still censored just like FF5 and gba FFVI -No cgi scenes -No multiplayer like snes and psx versions -Speech portraits aren't the same as the in battle portraits like FFV android -scrolling through items, magic, etc covers the entire scene +Speech portraits are cool Conclusion: DO NOT WANT :( One of the worst remakes ever.
I will never buy a game that requires you to be online to play. This is crazy. What do they get from that anyways? Its a shame too. i would have bought this otherwise
I am waiting for FF7!!! Hurry up and make it... $16 for FF7 is worth it... just don't ruin it... Clouddd save me from my boredom..... and tifa.... i'll be looking at you in the most inappropriate way... haha
The DRM was bad, but wasn't bad enough to not buy it. The "upgraded" graphics were the deal breaker. Ugly stuff. That's not the FFVI I remember, and I'm not interested in purchasing it any longer. I'm the kind of person who says "Graphics don't mean anything, a good game will stand on it's own", but I'm eating my own words right now, I just can't stand how it looks.
*Final Fantasy 6 is out here is our review*
It's the last iconic RPG from the SNES days, but is it worth that hefty price tag? Our app guy (and noted Final Fantasy veteran) Joseph Hindy takes a closer look in this review. Watch the review below or read it here: goo.gl/qLLwso
Rather pay the price tag of a decent SNES Emulator.
I'll never buy another Square Enix game until they start asking reasonable prices for decade old games.
Christopher Norulak *2 decade old game.
And considering that it's longer, better, and has more content than > 95% of Android games, the price isn't horrifying. It's bad yeah, but not like ungodly awful.
Almost at 7.
Joseph Hindy by that justification grand theft auto 3 should cost $15.
Damn them.
Are we the only people on Earth who liked this game? I agree, I think more should have been done, like give it the DS FF4/5 3D treatment.
I came to this video after thought why FFVII has a better treatment than VI if, at least for me, VI is even a little better.
9 is best
Can i still find a version with these graphics? Plz sb reply
Always online DRM?!?? Yep I am no longer even remotely interested in buying this game at all.
Talk about a major deal breaker on such a great SINGLE PLAYER ONLY game! I can't imagine if Betrayal at Krondor, another fantastic RPG, was released on the android (with CD music and sounds, of course!) and had THAT feature. >_
Couldn't agree more man, they can get fucked with the always online bullshit.
I hate to sound like a hipster, but I think I prefer the original graphics
Son of Tiamat I’m with you there.
I held on after the graphics, it's the 'always online' bullshit I can't stand!
Just use an emulator and save the cash.
Or apk
Yeah, plus you can play it offline
just download it online for free lol
@@HikariKunkawaii Where?

Thanks for the thorough review Joe! I love the FF series (10 was my favorite), and can't wait to play this one on my phone woot!
No FMVs from the PSOne version is a dissapointment
wish there was a mod I can put on there to change the graphics
I've been waiting ten long years for a 3D remake. Why 6? WHY do they treat SIX so badly?
I know this is a year old, but the 3D bastardized version for IV was terrible to look at, 6 came out ahead.
do they not offer this game any more? I cant find FFVI on the play store
I found this review really insightful and to the point. Thanks so much!
Emulator+moga Pro is the way to play this game on android. (IMHO)
Android Authority Keep in mind as well: for those of us running KitKat, it CANNOT be used on the Android RunTime. Of course, SE mentions this in the Play Store, but it has to be re-iterated (as is the case with nearly all of their games).
Pixel remasters are ok i guess but i Want the Bonus Content!!!! Ex Dungeons
Pardon the silly question, but does this version have the original snes music?
Do I need a constant Internet connection to Play it ? I want to Play it on my work. .. I dont have Internet there
What up with the random sounds like somebody's hitting a bucket with a stick in this video? It's just confusing.
Wait did you say this cannot be played offline?

"Improved graphics"?? They've totally ruined the graphics!

The PC ver looks something made exclusive for mobile phones! Like some
cheap ugly indie game they'd let us dl for free! 💩💩💩💩💩
I prefer my SNES copy.
I can just use a snes emulator lol
I really wanted to know how terrible trying to do the inputs for blitz command would be but apparently thats not an important detail
OOh man.. Almost cried hearing Terra's theme..

The control issue is not a delay in the movement, or a lag issue, its the way the walking is designed in ff6. I'm not keen on it having to be connected to the internet all the time - especially at that price! Looks good otherwise :)
I got it on sale today for 6 bucks nd it doesn't have to be connected to the internet now

Thank you for the review. Though the game is not perfect I was not going to buy it until I watched your video.
What? "Improved Graphics" ? These aren't "improved" simply because they are higher resolution. Honestly, main characters' sprites looks like it was done by amateurs.
I'm learning video game development as kind of a hobby. I haven't made it to pixel art yet (still getting the groundwork done i.e. objects, collision detection, the basics, etc lol) but to me it does seem like they did at least put an effort in. How much of an effort id debatable and I wouldn't argue if you said "not much effort" but I still think it looks better than the SNES version. Especially town maps.

You cant play this game without internet connection ?
but when is Vii, Viii and my personal fav IX coming to android?
Hey all, these bugs have been fixed now, no need for internet, contoles good, also you can use a controler and there is now cloud saving.
I heard you don't get a full screen picture, like there's black edges. Is this true in your experience?
Hiya, yes and no it kind of fall screen just thin yellow wood like lines on the left and right of the screen. But its not noticable when you start playing.

I'm hoping the FF6 remaster the sprite design like android versionand then the graphic, effect and BGM just like the remaster one, it's good mix
Was it necessary to display the app price the entire time?
It's also the icon, developer, and app name. Lots of info in that little box :)
I don't know whether to love or hate the visuals...
Ugh.. TH-cam annoyance.. Saying us and we in your review.
does the opera scene finally have vocals rather than "aaahs"? xD
darn I really this game. I din expect they would redo the sprites, unlike chrono trigger. There will be always + and - but I like how they did it to this.
hey! what about the ffix android ? have you tried it ?
xDushDush i tried, grafics are great and gameplay is the same.
Why isnt this released for pc on steam? seriously...that pisses me off.
IMPROVED graphics ? The filter on the sprites looks disgusting.
Has physical controller support on iOS. Sucks without a controller. Moga controller is pretty good. Supports about 600 games
why the size of this game so big? 480 mb!!!
Why would anyone pay for this port when it can be emulated?
Because some people want to be nice to companies instead of being bloody pirates.
sonic dv it's not illegal to use emulators if you own the original copy.
Nub Smoo like anybody actually cares about that. Are you telling me you would never download a game if you hadn't already purchased a physical copy?
I didn't say i don't but I'm just saying that emulators aren't illegal lol
The sprites on this looks decent compared to 5's Android release lmao
This does not work with rooted devices, nor does it work in Kitkat's ART mode.
I did this whole review on a rooted device. I even showed it in the video.
when is ff7 coming to android?
ok so on my iPhone, I don't have to have wifi to play this game, I can play it anytime anywhere. next, I would HATE, to see this game get a 3D make over on a DS port. Very great review
the controller pad hub looks too big.
They still didn't fix the control after two years!!! 😠😠😠
The simple fact that you have to be online is why buying this game is not worth it. I play the gba version through emulation and enjoy the game just as much.
Play the snes version. trust me it's much better
I really wish these games would come out on Steam...
3 and 4 recently have
Nub Smoo It's the shitty DS version of 4 though, and not the awesome PSP Complete Collection.
And of course, 3 only HAS a shitty DS version so...yeah, they've basically ported the two worst versions to Steam.
Lol true that, I just emulate the originals for now.
DarthEnderX The 3D remakes of FF3 and FF4 were NOT horrible.
***** Not terrible maybe, but considerably worse than the 2D versions.
I just dont understand why they wont release this on Switch its absolutely criminal that there is no Switch version
Its on the Steam Deck
Does anyone know where the save files are located. As you know there are no cloud saves and well switching devices means losings saves unless I can transfer them...
Just wait until the game gets a price cut, about 6 or 7 bucks just like final fantasy 5 on android.
So why did SE decide not to make this game 3D? Why should I buy this for $15 when I can just play the rom? The game is hardly enhanced with that filter they've put over everything.

I'm glad Square Enix made this possible! :-) this is what everyone gets for liking this too much! Ya SNES Fanboys!! :p
I´m waiting for final fantasy Tactics
What's a good game controller for this?
any bluetooth controller you can find that has 10 buttons or more
+mimipuu No one responded to you. :( Were you able to find out on your own? I'm trying to find a controller to buy.
+Brian Taylor I got an ipega 9021 :) it's alright for play just sometimes annoying when it won't connect right away or when you stop to take a break and come back to it you'll need to unpair then pair again. other than that I find that controller comfortable to use and lets you play for hours.
Awesome thanks so much for your help!
somebody believes that this game runs on my quite old smartphone: LG optimus (E610) L5 ?
Nice hoodie
Well 16 bugs for a buggy game is still much
There are too many problems
You cant recruit Shadow in Kohlingen or else the game freezes
And I have a bug which will always mess ul the opera scene
So i cant even get further than that
Switch the language to English and play through that part. After that, you can switch back.
wowowow, you can't play the game offline!?! Im playing ff5 on android right now and it doesn't make me do that, why would they ever do this!?!? That kills my desire and ability to play the game.
anti-piracy. if you steal it, can't play it because as soon as you go online it'll be all like "you stole it, now go buy it or you can't play it."
***** well it's a tough thing to do. If you make offline play possible, everyone's just going to steal it (after all, $16.99 is a lot of money for an app). Frankly I paid for it (I love the game and didn't mind so much) but I guess that's the only way for now to keep the pirates at bay eh?

It's a dumb move hurting the buyers without touching pirates. I wanted to buy it till I watched this video a few minutes ago. Now i will get myself an emulator.
didn't pay 16 for mine...
how come?
pirates bay
hey guys my copy of this game gives me infinite gold and i can't play it properly with infinite gold, i might as well activate a bunch of cheats.... does anyone know how to fix this?
redownload it i guess
I wish you wouldn't have kept that stupid thing in the bottom left corner of the screen the whole damn video.
Joe loves this game. Joseph Hindy
bet your ass I do :) it's my 2nd favorite game of all time.
What's number one?
By the way I heard this game has some bugs showing - had any problems?
Chrono Trigger is number 1. And I've heard of bugs but they either have been fixed before I got there or I managed to pass em without incident.
-Most of the backgrounds aren't redone at all
-The enemy sprites do not have the excellent quality of the FFV android release
-Character sprites are terribe
-Half of the character's bodies are cut off when in magitek armor
-tile clipping everywhere
-severly still censored just like FF5 and gba FFVI
-No cgi scenes
-No multiplayer like snes and psx versions
-Speech portraits aren't the same as the in battle portraits like FFV android
-scrolling through items, magic, etc covers the entire scene
+Speech portraits are cool
Conclusion: DO NOT WANT :(
One of the worst remakes ever.
Any similar game like FF VI? (not any FF series)
Chronotrigger
And another RPG I personally love is earthbound
I recommend both
I ll stick with the emulated version of this lol.
Ewwww what have they done to the graphics?
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww looks way worse than the original snes version
Just get SNES or GBA emulator for android and play it there.. the real ff6 experience. I personally prefer the GBA one :)
I will never buy a game that requires you to be online to play. This is crazy. What do they get from that anyways? Its a shame too. i would have bought this otherwise
so i need to be in a place whres internet all the time to play?
just download a emulator and play it that way. much better
You don't need wifi to play it
the best FF game has to have a remake on PS5 plssss
Ждем 7 и 8!!!!!😀
wow, always online? How utterly disappointing... I was gonna buy this one too..
cant you just use an emulator and save yourself some cash
HUUUUUUHHH??????
And joe please do a top emulator please
I am waiting for FF7!!! Hurry up and make it... $16 for FF7 is worth it... just don't ruin it... Clouddd save me from my boredom..... and tifa.... i'll be looking at you in the most inappropriate way... haha
Iven final fantasy 3 is 3d is just 170 mb
The DRM was bad, but wasn't bad enough to not buy it.
The "upgraded" graphics were the deal breaker. Ugly stuff. That's not the FFVI I remember, and I'm not interested in purchasing it any longer. I'm the kind of person who says "Graphics don't mean anything, a good game will stand on it's own", but I'm eating my own words right now, I just can't stand how it looks.
YES! I'M FIRST! WEEEEEEEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIENDS!
