I had zero interest in this show as a whole, but this adaptation was clearly done with love and reverence by people who had a solid appreciation for the source material (and the genre as a whole). Love it, thanks for sharing!
Many thanks for putting this up. What a lovely modern homage to Mr James's story.
One of the best versions Ive seen, and certainly the best update. Nails the banter, the character of the protagonist, the sense of a normal, slightly dorkish but amiable man going about an undisturbed life before the Other comes wafting in.
I watched this when first broadcast and have been waiting for years to see it again! Very effective retelling of this story.
This is one of the more excellent takes on an M R James story. I thought it deserved much more recognition. And I remember watching it on the most unseasonably warm Halloween days ever! Temperatures were in the mid 20s! Thanks for uploading.
I remember the first time I read this story, it was a terrifying experience that stayed in my memory for a long time. Mr James is a master of ghost stories. This was indeed a trip to discover a different version than Jonathan Miller's 1968 version. There is supposed to be another version, from 1956, but I can't find it anywhere, not from Norway, if anyone has a copy of it I would be delighted, and thank you so much for adding this wonderful version, nice twist on this story.
Best regards

Apparently it's called Whistle and I'll Come to You!, it's from 1957 actually, and it's just ten minutes long - but as for finding a copy, I haven't been able to I'm afraid
Tell a lie, here it is (listed as 1956 after all), and you can watch for free:

And just in case that's region-protected, here's an unlisted link to watch it here instead:

Are you kidding me? The now cancelled but beloved by students everywhere, long term drama about general practitioners, did a rendition of a nearly 120 year old supernatural story?
There are elements that seem to be drawn from other sources like the pay up front aspect seems to have been taken from the recent number 13 adaptation but its an interesting take on the story.
There are lots if nice little easter eggs (or chocolate santas would be more appropriate) hidden in here if you know what you're looking for.
Well, it was made a decade ago! There is indeed a lot of stuff in there for the finding. For instance, the music playing in the car when Al arrives in the car outside the pub is Soundgarden's 'Been Away So Long...' The fun of the series was that we could do stuff like this, along the way.

We made this in 2014 - and we think it turned out rather well!
I would definitely say so!
Who's the actor that played the retired military chap? Seemed familiar... Yes it was good too..
Thanks for this! I'm a bit of an expert on James...didn't know this existed. 😊😊😊
Nothing really happens til the two-thirds mark, this is the key thing in a James adaptation.
Must have cost tuppence to make, but it's the best version of this story to have been filmed.
And yes, including the Jonathan Miller one.
Oh wow, I never knew Doctors took on M.R James!
We did 👻
Hordernwick; a reference to Sir Michael himself?
It lacks the tension and sense of doom in the Jonathan Miller 1968 version. Dramatically much less satisfying, though clearly aware of its illustrious predecessor. Hordernwick indeed!
I humbly disagree... 😏
Well, in that case I shall watch it again.
Charmless and insufferable.
