Matilda ! 1959 ! Listening to Wolfman Jack, when men didnt have sex changes and girls were glad of it ! Parents could beat your butt and so could the coach or principal ! We stood for the National Anthem, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, had prayer in school, and there was no rap ! Making the "Drag" in a '50 Merc, $2 worth of gas and you could cruise all night, thank God for this music, those who made it and the wonderful memories it brings to life .
I am one of the neice's of lead guitarist Marshall Ledee far right hand side... He died on Friday June 1st 2012... I just wanted to share that with Cookie and the cupcakes fans... We loved you Uncle Marshall...
my aunt loved cookie and the cupcakes if they were playing anywhere around Orange Texas are Louisiana she was going to be there she passed away Feb2 09 but i bet she is dancing right now to them
I lived in lake charles and would walk by the and hear them when they rehearsal. Never knew they were famous. I remember the name of the group. lo lol I was small and young I was 6 or 7
There use to be a club in a little town called Lawtell , Louisiana. Every time I went to this club, this song was played on the jukebox there. The name of the club was the Green Lantern Club. One hell of a party place to have a good time. This was back in the 60's and the 70's. On the weekends this place was packed.. Life is good. Charles
I love this song, it brings back such good memories when my Grandparents would take me with them to outdoor concerts in Louisiana to listen to these bands. I sure do miss those days.
Listened to this over the great, WLAC 1510 am from Nashville Tenn. Lived up in Mich. and had to wait till dark when WLAC then would come booming in. Big Hue Babe, The great John R, Gene Nobles just great music from the south that us up north didn't get to hear. Many memories from the early 60's thanks for the post.
I read all the names of people who sent in comments about Cookie and His Cupcakes and didn't recognize any despite growing up in Lake Charles, Cookie would often stop at one of my Dad's service stations (Billups on Broad St). I was always with my Dad and would service Cookie's old white Pontiac station wagon when he pulled in to gas up and had many conversations with him. Being a young boy it always excited me to talk to Cookie and see all the band members and to this day, I still love their music. I can still remember all the words to all his popular songs and every now and then play and listen to them again as I am doing today. His music certainly had an influence on me. Today I own a record shop and while I never get a request for one of his songs, they are here just in case someone wants a copy.
Where’s the record shop? Sounds like a great place and that’s an amazing memory you’ve got there. I’m actually working on a project to keep people’s memories alive for future generations and wondered if you might like to answer a few questions about your memories over the years? Might be nice to put some of them to paper but only if you’d like to of course 📖
It was real honored to have Shelton Dunaway sit in with our band this past November at Annies Drinks in Lake Charles . Listening to him sing all of his songs and for me, being able to play them with our band was just a highlight of my career as a musician. He signed my guitar which will be treasured for years to come. It was also a great honor to have his son, our drummer playing as a full time member of the band, The Louisiana Scramblers.
kajunmoon The Louisiana Scramble Band will play where ever they are called to play. We are a mostly Cajun French but a very good variety of swamp pop, blues and jazz. Check out Shawn Saucier on Facebook for bookings.
sad to see the good ones go, i love this music, may your uncle rest in peace, peace in his heart to know his music brought fun to everyone, sorry for your loss Nedra, i wasn't nearly born in that time but my heart sure did, i love this ol' music!!
I remember this song very well. Had a couple older brothers who had a band and this was one of my favorites of the songs they did. Very catchy' beat. One of the first songs I learned to play on a guitar
Definitely, Cookie and the Cupcakes, my favorite group of the 50s. They're not as popular or as famous as the Coasters, the Platters, or the Drifters, but in my own personal opinion, they're simply the BEST! I wonder if they ever recorded a Christmas song. Elvis might be the king, but I'd bet Blue Christmas would've sounded even better with Cookie and the Cupcakes.
Mathilda is quite simply, one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Add "Got You On My Mind" by Cookie and The Cupcakes, and you're in Swamp Rock heaven.
AHHHH, my school plays this as one of the stand tunes at the football game! It took me forever to find this song. I absolutely love it. We sing a part of it and it gets me full of emotion
My meme and pop used to play this. It was their song. They were together for more than 50 years. This was back in the day when love was real. Im 23 and i appreciate this
This record here made it to number one here in OKC back in 1959 on top 40 radio station WKY. One of my all time favorites from that year. Larry N. Boyington, aka Larry Neal, former curator of the Wax Museum on the big 1520 KOMA
hey, found this on amazon. So, still lookin fer King Carl...."They began in the early 1950's as The Boogie Ramblers (leader and trumpet player Ernest Jacobs, drummer Simon "Kedee" Lubin, guitarist Marshall LeDee and saxophonist/vocalist Shelton Dunaway), and were joined by Cookie sometime in the summer of 1952 after securing a recording contract with the Goldband label. Their first release there in 1955, however, had Dunaway performing the vocals on Cindy Lou b/w Such As Love, although by 1956 Thierry had taken over and they were henceforth known as Cookie And His (The) Cupcakes."
I was 13 with my hormones bouncing off the wall as the girls in the gym played it over and over. I would reach over the curtain on the bleachers and watch them in their gym shorts play this one over and over. Well, we in the hot humid San Antonio Texas barrios also loved it and danced to it.
I am sorry for your loss , my Brother passed away on Valentines Day 2014. His picture hangs on the wall , a little higher than the rest, because I always looked up to him and I still do. God Bless You.
Also when you could call into the radio station and dedicate a song. This song for some crazy reason was always being dedicated to me by guys. Always by my name along with my nickname. That people began to think that was actually my name. When I was home once my oldest brother asked it is your name and it is your nickname and I know you have dated all those guys. Is it you? I just smiled.
easy....download the TH-cam Downloader (or search the title and see what else comes up). Install. The copy the link and paste into the Download box.....this will normally copy the video to a place/folder you select. Doesn't always work...but 95% of the time does.

Recorded in 1957, released in 1959, and everyone cried for Mathilda. Swamp Pop, so I'll see you later alligator. Oh yes the pride of Louisiana!

This is for you Dad! I miss and love you so much! Thank you for raising us with great music! Have fun in heaven 😢

All Elvis did was to Take old Blues Numbers and Change the way they were Done That's all. NOT the King of Rock & Roll
'' RIGHT ''
