Since 1968, no new stilt houses can be built which is good and bad for a lot of reasons. But there are several offshore islands (Cabbage Key, Useppa Island, etc.) that are only accessible by boat which offers something similar, if you can afford the homeowner’s and flood insurance issues. But the island houses are better because they can be powered and have actual plumbing unlike the stilt houses that have to have outhouses with chemical toilets.
I do not think the stilt houses really offer much to the owners other than the history and a place to visit once in awhile; they are pretty rudimentary.
Those stilt houses are so cool, some of my family lives in Key Biscayne in South Florida and there's a bunch of houses on the water called stiltsville. The fishing is usually really good around them and while it might be trespassing jumping off the roof is really fun too😂
Sad those stilt houses can no longer be built in a way, but be that as it may, there’s be thousands of them if there were no hurdles to building. We just gotta figure out how to be adopted into one of these families that owns one. Thanks for the video!
@@BobBroeking - yes, kind of. We went out to Sanibel today via the Caloosahatchee river on a “3 hour tour”. Would have made a great video. Wife was riding on the back of my ski and my son was on her FX.. We’re riding along and my wife says she can’t see our son anymore (he had stopped to get his music on the Bluetooth) - so I turned my ski around a little too tightly and we both went for an unexpected swim falling off the ski. Dam*! We had fun, but it was cool after the swim and then started raining 😡! Not giving up though!
