    Back in February of 2019 I took a leap of faith and slapped this cage on a Force 1 derailleur for a monstercross build even though Garbaruk told me it wasn't compatible, then let them know it was a perfect fit.
    Gambling with frankensteining bike parts together is a vice.

    Great show.
    I follow this with some interest since before GRX, the option for brifters with mtb gear range was mainly with SRAM.
    There is another option though, which is a MTB shifter routed thru a thinner road bar (often a fixie handlebar) running a XT RD.
    Brake levers would be some road style ones like Tektro RL340/520.
    I have run this setup on a couple of mini velos.
    It gives indexed shifting and functions like bar end shifters with the advantage of not being bar ends and easier to reach for.

    Because of advancing age, I recently converted two bikes to straight bars instead of drops. For old Shimano 9 speed this is a piece of cake - everything is interchangeable, shifters and derailleurs, road and mountain. For ten and eleven speeds be prepared to do some homework. Pull ratios differ between road and mountain, SRAM and Shimano.

    That derailleur cage and jockey wheels are sweet. I love that blocky CNC’d look, it speaks to craftsmanship. Shimano and SRAM parts look like they were styled by the same people who designed the Mountain Dew bottles. It’s like they carved a wax model of a derailleur and left it in the Arizona sun for a few hours, then slapped a bunch of loud stickers on it. Great design if you wear Vans and a Tapout shirt.

    Dude nice video. I think I am going to do this. I already have an 11-46 cassette and my Force 1 derailleur is barely hacking it. I can optimize shifting and keep this cassette or go to an 11-52 if I want and that'll be plenty.

      I got the KCNC Eagle replacement cage and the Sunshine 11-52 cassette and everything works well. Pretty surprised. I thought it might inherently shift poorly because of the giant scale but it works perfectly. I have no reason to try anything different like a cassette with a 9 cog. I went with a 42t chainring and am pretty happy with it. The replacement cage didn't go on seamlessly, but I figured it out.

    Do you think it's possible and do you think I should use a road or mtb derailleur? I would probably be using an 11-50t sunrace cassette but this video has me thinking about using this garbaruk cassette. Thanks for the experimentation and for saving us all time and money.

      1) Cage was originally designed to work with the mtb. In the vid, I said that Garbaruk never tested it on Rival, so this is new territory. 2) Don't know. 3) It does nothing to the clutch only extends the cage. Either your derailleur has a clutch or not, this won't add or take it away.

    • @HollyBoni
      @HollyBoni 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These kind of derailleurs and pretty much all 11 and 12spd SRAM MTB rear derailleurs are 1x specific. Your 2x Rival is very different to this 1x Rival. Even if you could bolt this cage, or an Eagle NX etc. cage to your current derailleur, it wouldn't work with a 2x setup (and I highly doubt it would work at all).
      If you want a 2x derailleur with a clutch, your best bet would be to go with a 10spd SRAM GX rear derailleur (it works with both 10 and 11spd road levers, even some factory bikes come with this setup). It has a clutch, and it can do 2x. Officially the biggest cassette you can run with the GX is a 36T, not sure how much more you could push it in a 2x setup.
      Aftermarket and/or more expensive cassettes don't necessarily last longer than stock cassettes, sometimes they are less durable. Aftermarket cassettes are mostly about saving weight and offering unique options.

      Lower gears exist for a reason. Mountain biking, loaded touring, steep off road bikepacking, riding with kids, carrying groceries ip a hill, etc., Sometimes people ride bikes with more than GU packets in a jersey pocket on nicely graded surfaces.

    200+ bucks for a cassette and 70 for pulley? You could get lower gearing with a Claris 3x8 groupset in that price ;)
    Although I must admit that this cassette looks stunning!

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Still cheaper than $300 SRAM Eagle cassette and $700 derailleur and $400 shifter. You could get lower gearing with a lot of things. Who the hell would ride Claris if they didn't have to?

    Hi, Can you tell me what is the most compliant drop handlebar with a little flare that you can recommend? Sadly can't afford carbon, so aluminum would be my target.

  • @jeffbrunton3291
    @jeffbrunton3291 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    10 speed road shifters are compatible with MTB rear mechs up to the 9 speed group set, still gives 10 speeds (Shimano). At least a 36 on the back so 1 to 1, and can run easier gears (40t)
    With SRAM, the standard force RD should manage a 40t garbaruk cassette, per reports on the internet, so 1 to 1 on a 40t chain ring, and 10x40 so fine for the road
    But this extended RD should be great, must try it, if I ever need a 50......

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. And it’s cage works on 11 spd Rival. The shifter determines the number of speeds not the derailleur.

    Good on you for learning some bike knowledge then sharing it with us! Cage swaps have been around for as long as there were different length cages or someone was willing to create a longer cage. Good to know the method is alive and kicking into the 21st century!
    PS - don’t feel you have to reply to every comment, especially negative or knot-headed ones. Focus on the positive!

    Nice one Russ!! As a side note, it's a bummer that you gotta explain/justify yourself to viewers who still haven't caught onto what this series is actually all about. I don't have a gravel/adventure bike, and I don't understand a lot of this stuff, but I do like how you present your videos, which is why I keep watching. Love the color combos too!! All you need now is a coat of pink cashmere 😅😉😎

    I put an e.thirteen 9-46 on my XD White Industries rear hub, and have been running it for a couple years with a 1X SRAM Force group, 38T front ring, works great. Eagerly awaiting the SRAM 1x12 wide-range drop-bar drivetrain. (Also have a bike with SRAM AXS Eagle cassette / drop-bar Force shifters, and it's excellent.)

    Russ, I love all of your videos but really loved this one. You're giving me some "bad ideas". I'd love to do this to my Surly. Right now I have the dreaded 50/34 compact road chainring with an 11/32 cassette, (105). I hate it. When I have some extra funds I'll try this for sure. Thanks.
