  • For a long time I was wondering what region of the country to choose for spending the long spring weekend in peace and quiet. Assumptions were simple, region had to be not popular among tourists, rich in wildlife, with access to water and of course mountainous terrain.
After analyzing maps and all other factors the choice fell on Bystrzyckie Mountains in Sudety.
I was not disappointed. The terrain is completely different from Gorce, Beskidy and Tatra mountains I know so well.
Spruce forests overgrown with moss, densely crossed by a network of streams, running deer and spring birdsong. There were also ancient artifacts such as ruins of forts and chapels, statues guarding forest roads and graves of people connected with these mountains and forests years ago, hidden among the trees.
The whole built a mystical and magical atmosphere, inducing reflection and reverie. Calmness and relaxation is how I will remember this time.
I started my hike at Jagodna mountain hostel. Then I took the green trail around Zamkowa Kopa and headed towards Huta. On the way I visited Wilhelm Fort and had a chance to admire the surrounding nature. I reached the yellow trail. I headed north-west taking the azimuth to the "Eternity" road, where I had the opportunity to meet the Guardian of Eternity statue.
The sun was slowly setting. The orange glow shimmering between the treetops was a reminder of the approaching darkness. It was time to set up camp. In order to do so, I headed north towards Kościelnik peak, where in a small clearing surrounded by spruces, birch trees and numerous stone boulders I decided to wait for the night.
I quickly managed to collect firewood and set up a tarp. Using flint and birch bark I lit a small fire. For supper I prepared a kind of cured meat. Juniper sausage, carrots, peppers, onions, mushrooms, salt, bell pepper and tomato puree.
    It was time for sleep.
The next day I was greeted by a small rain, which soon stopped. I prepared a modest breakfast, boiled water for tea using a stove and continued my journey.
I made a modest breakfast, boiled water for tea with the help of a stove and continued my way. Going towards Pokrzywno I replenished the water supply. I visited so called Kamienna Góra and further west I entered the green trail. I reached the source of the Bystrzyca River and then decided to check how the local hunting shelter looked like. It turned out to be locked with three triggers. I moved further south to find a place for another camping and to wait for the night.
After a few hours of walking, crossing the junction of the blue and red trails, I went deep into the forest. Reaching a small stream I decided to set up a second camp. There was a sense of uneasy atmosphere in the air for a long time. The approaching orcas were gusting more and more strongly on the treetops, so I chose a lower area for the camp. I felt that a strong downpour was approaching, so I solidly constructed and strengthened the tarp.
I gathered the wood, lit a fire, boiled some water, fried some onions and poured boiling water over a quick dinner from a bag.
It rained heavily the whole night and the next day.
I had predicted such turn of events. The rain didn't cause any major problems. I love such weather. The nature is resting and wakes up after a while. Plants bloom, animals become less alert and it is easier to meet them in the forest.
After a quick breakfast and tidying up the camp I started my way back to the hostel where I reached after less than 3 hours of walking.
Bystrzyckie Mountains and Sudety Mountains turned out to be beautiful, wild and magical place. Surrounding nature, monumental spruce forests create sensational scenery. It was a very successful trip.
    Enjoy!
