    I have been watching you guys for a while. This episode forced me to write a comment. Sophie is obviously the icing on the cake, her wit and gentle sarcasm is perfect. However the two of you are just delicious. You turned a potentially extreme weather incident into a perfectly edited and interesting episode. Apart from Ryan having the best sailor tan I have ever seen, Sophie has a way of using her eyes in a glance that tells everything. Ryan you are lucky to have Sophie and Sophie knows she has one of the most proficient sailors on TH-cam. Love you guys!

    Rick Moore on Sophisticated Lady had an interesting anchor set up to ride out a storm at anchor (Ep. 487). After getting the primary anchor set, a crewman dove to the anchor and attached a second anchor to the anchor chain, 7 or 8 meters from the main anchor. I helped the main anchor reset when the wind changed direction.

      No can do, you will severely weaken the chain link and defeating the strategy by doing so. Better set an independent anchor by all means! Cap Rick showed the damage to the link in a later episode. Be safe!

  • @allanmoore7790

    Capt. Rick from SV Sophisticated Lady once said that two items you definitely needed to have in working order was an autopilot and a great anchor and chain setup!

    Hey! I recognized that storm on Predict Wind. (Alex) I was on a 15m catamaran moored in Little Harbour, Abaco, the Bahamas for two days. More protected than you guys, so less intense. I did feel a little guilty. The wind, blowing rain, lightning were thrilling, the waterspout a few days earlier also exciting...I felt guilty because I enjoyed it worry free: it wasn't my boat.

    No expert here, but I would think two anchors (not just the main and a kedge) would be good for riding out a storm, especially in a small anchorage and with a tropical storm where the wind can change directions during the storm. Just a thought.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The only thing you have to be mindful of with how much chain you have on a boat is the weight that you put at the bow. You don’t want to create imbalances! But yeah, having upgraded to that setup made us much more confident “anchorers” :)

    We were safely at anchor at Hog Island, Grenada watching and tracking Alex sweep in and move Northwards and away from the Lesser Antilles, having minimal effect on us. I thought then with concern, that there would be many boats having to combat it's wrath in Bermuda. So glad to see that you all survived it relatively unscathed. Well done; good seamanship gave you the best chance. Quite harrowing though.

      Its important to remember that while the anchor is important as the "anchor" it is not everything when anchoring. Location, depth, bottom type and probably most important, scope all okay major factors when knowing if the setup will hold.
      People put a lot in to the specific anchor only to have 30m of chain... and in our case that would have only been 2 to1 scope... not enough and asking for an issue.
      . We had cost to 90m out which in my opinion is what held us.

    Hey guys! What anchor alarm system do you use? Curious as we are out here too during hurricane season and also deal with Courmel winds, Elfantes, and Chubascos in the Sea of Cortez...
    So basically 30+ knots unpredictable coming in whenever they feel like it 🤣 Would sure feel loads better if we had a good anchor alarm to help us take action sooner than later if we are dragging.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We use “anchor”. It’s a super easy app. We also use the Raymarine anchoring wizard on our plotter which is pretty awesome actually! What we’ve learned is that as important as the anchor, chain and snubber setup, knowing what kind of seabed you anchor on is crucial. Atticus dragged a few times, and honestly the only difference between them and us were a couple of hundred meters. We think it’s the seabed they were on that wasn’t as “sturdy” as ours.
