Furka Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in Switzerland with the height of 2,429 metres (7,969 ft). The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond movie Goldfinger (1964). In the movie you can see how big was a Rhone Glacier back in a day, where it was passed the Hotel Belvedere.
The Rhone Glacier (Rhonegletscher) is the largest glacier in the Urner Alps. There is the Ice Grotto in the Glacier, where you walk in the tunnel made in the ice, but unfortunately it is not that exciting anymore, as most of the tunnel is melted away.
Hotel Belvedere was closed in 2016. This beautiful mountain hotel is one of the first Swiss victims of climate change. The 11,000-year-old glacier that used to be right at the building entrance is retracting farther and farther away into the distance. Ice tunnel can no longer be safely carved into the glacier, so the unique sight that once attracted thousands of tourists is no longer there. I just hope that new investors will find an appropriate solution to bring Hotel Belvedere back to life.
