Long Thermal Flight by 1941 Rubber-Powered Gollywock in Wawayanda - 10.5.20

  • The air was calm, it was mid afternoon on Monday 10.5.20, so I decided to put up one more flight with the Gollywock, after a long weekend of flying with the Flying Aces Club gang at Barron Field in Wawayanda, NY. Drift was minimal as I launched her from the SW end of the field. What followed was my longest flight ever as a flyer of a rubber-powered free-flight model that landed on the same field as where I launched it. I had longer flights in the past, but these were OOS deals with either the model specking out into the blue, or landing miles away into the next county. This flight was a special one, and will forever be etched into my memories.
    The Gollywock includes a 13.5" carved balsa prop, and came in at 59 grams. Rubber is 3 loops of .187" x 44", 32 grams. Here's an article on dethermalizers: www.hallmanstud...
    The film mistakenly stated that this is the 1939 version of the plan, while it is actually from 1941, often referenced as the post-war Gollywock.
    That version of the plan is available here for a nominal fee: freeflight.org...
    An alternate version of the Gollywock plan (based on the 1939 design) is available here for free: outerzone.co.u...
    Music: "Long Meditation" by SoundRose via MotionArray.com
    Filmed by a Canon PowerShot SX20-IS & and an iPhone 11 Pro.

      Thx John. I appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad you find the films relaxing. I truly could not believe what I was seeing thru the camera, and only prayed that I kept the bird in view throughout. What a treat it was to see her soar like this. I'm forever smitten by free-flight.

      Totally agree. I started building and flying about 40 years ago. Started with rubber powered, then control line and the last 30 years has been R/C. I still love the old rubber powered free flight. It truly is an art to build straight and true, balance and then trim out one of these little gems. I could never build rubber powered planes like this guy does. I love coming on here after a hard days work and watching these little beauties flying. It's amazing how well he builds and trims to get these awesome flights.

    I’m currently isolating due to possible Covid exposure waiting on test results. I have many friends keeping me connected but otherwise I’m about as lonely and depressed as I’ve ever been and your videos are a such a lovely distraction. The craftsmanship you put into those videos is just as compelling as the models themselves.

      That looks like the later Midwest version and is certainly not the earlier design which has bamboo wing and stab kits. One of the earlier versions appeared in the 1944 Airtrails Annua.
      You may be aware that Simmers is the "S" of K &S. The "K" being "Stoop" Kartch and both were well known Chicago area free flighters

    • @maxfliart
      @maxfliart  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulhelman2376 I agree. Thx for clarifying, Paul. Mine was downloaded from the NFFS site, where they call it the 1941 Post-War Gollywock. I'm relatively new to oldtimer models so I appreciate the history behind it all. Did not know that about K&S!

      Thx. I agree...felt like an eternity, especially as it circled directly overhead. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Yes, this prop has a simple freewheeler which got a lot of work thru the flight...where my DT, set to go off at 2-1/2 minutes, got hung up. This time, I'm glad it did.
