There was another person who suggest that doing manual labor was the best way to know a people - Ludwig Wittgenstein. (he not only suggested - he did it).
So, young lady: you get paid to listen to Ones and Tooze several times? Luckyyyy! You know, you should give Adam a Concord - I'm sure Mr. Bloomberg could do that specially after Adam's words on a previous live event at the ??? Bloomberg Convention Center or something like that.
On the "are you an activist?": I'm a person who lives in a democratic country so, well, I'm an activist. I don't make a fuzz about it because every citizen is - even the ones who think they aren't. Now ... you put Prof. Tooze on a corner ball because he is an activist but he also knows that "activism" has got a bad name. I hope the context based answer gets him out of this catch 22 and allows him to score a goal.
Would you rather climate activists just stay quiet, confined to their localities when they're dealing with "global warming?" If a house is on fire with scattered residents, should they just stay where they are, not communicating at all, and splash water on only the fire exactly where they are?
@@AlgebraicAnalysis Likewise, i would be a hypocrite if i ate half pound steaks every day, while exclaiming "isn't dairy farming just terrible... We really need to do something". Calling yourself "climate activist" while you're in the top 1% of polluters on this planet is ridiculous.
@@Jensth You missed my point. I don't know if Adam in particular identifies as an "activist," but he is a person of some influence as a notable academic. The recognition conferred upon him as such allows for him to take an advisory role over the executive sphere with some effect. As an economist, he also may possess knowledge of how economies ought to go about reorienting their structures and activities towards climate friendly models. That is the part he can play in this matter. As his role is largely advisory, his function and means is communication, and his travel essential in this capacity. If anything, it is this attitude, that one ought to take extreme checks against the self so as to contain the harm oneself alone emanates, that is truly pompous, self-righteous, and hypocritical. After all, what use is there in doing so? Do you, one human of the eight billion on this planet, really matter that much? Do you make yourself a spectacle of positive imitation to a few, hundreds, thousands, millions? Do you spread the contagion of the idea that climate change is serious, or of its solution? Your focus is solely to be "pure," a faultless ascetic. There is little thoughtful concern for the climate there, only an identity politic.
No action? You have no idea what he does to offset his carbon footprint. Air travel is in any case a comparatively small component of the carbon emissions crisis.

So ... who would imagine that John Maynard Keynes is the unknown influence behind David Cronenberg ...

Wow ... Adam dis a fantastic bait and switch: he started talking about sodomy and then switched to something much more important and complex. 👏👏👈
Imagine calling yourself a climate activist when you fly around the world non-stop. All talk, no action
