    Where I used to live in southern Ontario I used to pick every spring a good crop of morels. I have no memory of seeing these Velvet Foot species. It was a climax uphill mixed wood stand of red and white pine and sugar maple and beech. We had no elm. And all the morels I picked there were black capped. Every year I would disperse pieces of several morels in the hope of "reseeding" the soil. They never failed to show up. But now I live farther north and only once have I found morels. But the Chanterelles and King Boletes more than make up for my loss. Thanks for this video.

    I'm from Germany and i've never heard of a strong association of either velvet foot or morell with elm trees. The latter grows predominantly with ash trees here (fraxinus excelsior).

    Good stuff! More people need to know these things, so thanks for sharing the knowledge. Society, as a whole, is getting dumbed down because all they've ever known is grocery stores and Amazon Prime. I overheard a conversation the other day, and this person didn't know where salt came from. Knowing your land is a lost art form. Thanks again.

      Salt comes from the ocean. This guy gave his bride a magic box and she over wished salt it wouldn't stop producing salt. The box made so much salt it filled their house. The husband and wife didn't know how to stop the box from making salt. The man threw it in the ocean to get rid of it and that is why the ocean is full of salt. Learned that in elementary school. No seriously I do know where salt comes from your comment reminded me of that story.

    Hello Adam, Are Morels also associated with Hackberries, Celtis occidentalis? Enoki in the Japanese language means Hackberry, which is where I typically find Velvet foot in the Midwest. Thank you so much for your knowledge and willingness to share this gift with others. YOU ROCK!

    • @LearnYourLand
      @LearnYourLand  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, one of my black morel spots is in an area that contains hackberry and elm trees. Both trees do very well in fertile habitats, and fertile soils are very conducive to morel growth.
