    My luke warm take:
I think aggressive blading needs an online presence doing similar things as the mushroom blading guys.
As in presenting the skaters personalities and enjoyment along side the tricks. Injecting more of the fun rather than just the excitement and skill.
I mean, they have a video reviewing the pants that they like to skate in for Christ’s sake.
Like, I love bacemint. That’s some of my favourite stuff but, who are these people? What’s it like going for a skate with them?
Even if it’s all business, all the time I’d like to see how that is. What their approaches and thought processes are etc.
Generally speaking a lot of success on TH-cam hinges on personality and showing who you are as well as what you do.
Rachard’s content is like this and it’s really endearing to see everyone just being themselves and cracking jokes etc. Mix that stuff into a great skate edit and you’re definitely onto something. Or even just include it as additional videos on the channel. I feel like we need to move past the “banger video/edit” mentality. Especially if we’re wanting to attract interest outside of the sport.

I think if we had like a Braille Skateboarding equivalent that was all about rollerblading I think that would be cool and very beneficial. I love how Braille does a lot of rollerblade content and I definitely think that's helped the rollerblade community and to have a rollerblade crew like that with similar videos to their "skate everything", and their "you make it we skate it" series that could be huge for rollerblading.

  • @cunawarit

As someone who doesn't do ANY agressive skating, I still think I'm the target audience for an event like the Bladling Cup as much as I was a target audience for an event like Red Bull Crashed Ice. I'm a "recreational" and perhaps a "fitness" skater (quads, blades, and ice), most of the skating I do is at the roller rink and ice rink, I don't know lots of tricks, I'm old and I'm relatively new at it too, and my skating is relatively lame overall (nobody ever looks at me and goes "WOW! look at that!!!"). But I like to skate, I like to watch skate events, I like to consume skating content and I buy skating products. My money goes to the skating industry as much as anyone else's does, I buy skates, I buy wheels, plates, bags, etc... I'm not the next big thing, but I may be the one clapping for the next big thing as part of the audience.

    • @TomMoyse

If aggressive skating wants to make any big comeback it needs to leave its elitist and holier than thou attitudes in the bench. Inline is already so small as a whole that we don't need childish bickering between aggressive, wizard, free, etc. skaters about "who's the real deal" and "our cool image" and so on. I've seen (in comment sections online) way more hate directed at freeskating by aggressive skaters than any other group. You don't need extra gatekeeping on a sport that gatekeeps itself purely on difficulty as it is! Most people put on skates, wipe out, get hurt and put them in the shelf!

I’m surprised no one has mentioned that roller skaters and in-skaters sessioned, partied and and competed against each other in the early 90’s. People should check out the early VG movies or Rene goes (to) Lausanne where you will see thousands of roller skaters and in-line skaters all getting along. The contest/event was even titled “International In-line and Freestyle Skating Contest” as roller skaters were considered as freestyle skaters. It seems that in todays skating world has created a divide between the groups.

The Barbie movie probably won’t sell skates like crazy, but the Barbie audience is kids mostly. Or younger people at least, which we need in a bad way. It will get more kids on skates, Rec or not, which will lead to more people on aggressive skates. To what extent? No idea, we’ll see. But it will likely have some form of impact.

There's WAY more options for wizard frames now as well so price-point isn't nearly as big an issue as it was before. Daedje must've been under a rock for the last 15 years bc Aggressive has been the least practiced discipline of skating for a long time, what a genuinely smooth brained take 😂

You may be right about my estimation of the current number of kids. I try not to exaggerate for effect, that's a poor way to make a point, but as you said this is all subjective; I go off of what I see, in person and online. And from my (local, subjective, limited) viewpoint... if it is more than a few hundred, it's not much more. A few thousand at the most. The photo you put in at 28:32 shows 29 people by my count, and they're not all kids. Let's be generous and say there's a hundred similar scenes out there... that's still not even 3,000 kids. That's not enough to replace the current, what, 20,000? 30,000? active grinderbladers worldwide.
I think my statement about these kids' representation on social media IS true. It's understandable, blading as a whole gets excited when they see youth in the sport (as we should), and that leads to a lot of sharing/reposting etc. Which is great! But, my point was, it skews our perceptions of their numbers.
28:13 As above, yes, that's what I meant. Obviously these kids' skating being seen is a good thing, and I do also hope that this draws some of their peers into the sport.
30:00 It is true, but my statement wasn't specific enough- I was speaking of the bulk of the population. Of course there are a few people grinderblading at a high level into their forties. It's possible, but rare. Sven and Julio may be ripping past their 50th birthdays, I certainly hope so, but the reality for 99% of bladers is that much past forty, the best you can hope for is for your degression to be tolerable emotionally.
And in 15 years... 90% of our population will be at or past 40. As for those younger bladers still being able to rip in 15 years? Sure, of course- but my earlier point stands- there won't be enough of them to support a meaningful, productive culture. The fan-supported model is great and all, economics isn't really what I was getting at but this does beg the next question for me: is this possible?
Will potential new bladers that we attract be interested in a culture dominated by a bunch of old fucks, no matter how accessible we make it, via TH-cam or whatever else? Will said old fucks accept and celebrate these youngster's blading, which will inevitably be different-looking and different-feeling than what said old fucks hold up as their shining ideals? The skating coming from a 15-year-old in 2030 is going to be much more a descendant of Robbie Pitts or Danny Beer than of Dustin Latimer or Brian Aragon.
31:55 Thankfully, you arrive at the conclusion that I was nudging towards. We've been doing the same thing over and over for years- some things have worked to slow the bleeding, but we haven't fixed the problem. We need to be smart and try some new things, as a sport, soon, to attract and retain new, young bladers.

If a company didn't put money in or an individual didn't start rolling around on pieces of plastic because of a single homophobic joke, then how is that now "bad" for the sport? If anything rollerblading became the unique sport it is today because of those barriers. Sure, we didn't sell a couple of Mountain Dews to some bros but we still had Haffey, Aragon, Broskow, and Farmer during those "darkest days" when people were afraid of being called gay progressing the style to what we see today. People who could shrug off a joke.

      @konnyknees 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@randmcnally. I see your point, the barriers made the sport what it is today and it’s def in a really cool place now that we def have a much wider landscape of styles, tricks, and general approaches to skating. Def a good point. I think that mostly came from the lack of money floating around the industry though, less so about the hardships of being an outcast extreme sport. That’s also unfortunately not really a common perspective of a lot of old school rollerbladers in 2022 who miss the “good ol days of hammers”.
Any publicity is good publicity, I feel you there. Even tho Brink was corny af, it was still a big inspiration.
Maybe I’m a skeptic and a lil more cynical, but I don’t personally get my hopes up when the only Hollywood film ‘supposedly’ hyping up skates will be the fuckin Barbie movie. It’s Barbie ‘accessory’, not another blading movie that’s gonna get peeps into skating. I’m seeing history repeat itself a lil bit is all.
I don’t want Mountain Dew or Red Bull drinking bros to define the demographic of the sport, I just don’t want to see popular media give another reason for all sorts of people, including youngsters who are supposed to be the future, to make fun of it in 2022 because that shit just doesn’t help at all.
Your example of the legends in the sports prime is dope but half of them are burnt out on giving so much to the sport that unfortunately could never support them monetarily. You’re wrong if you don’t think the toxic skateboarding culture that pushed kids and investors out of rollerblading at the same time did not hurt the sport. Tricks were laced for sure but I’m just bummed only us bladers kinda recognized and supported that.

Look at it more from this perspective, if skateboarding started including scooters in everything they did im sure it would create a rift in the community. Skateboarding would never do that they already built it into an olympic sport while keeping the history of the sport in tact, but with the way the rollerblading community is you cant complain and say we are a small unique sub culture and deserve more for what we do. I will be the first top say that rollerblading is much harder then most people give it credit for. But we have to realize that every sport deals with this. The best form of flattery is imitation. you know bro everyone thinks they look way different then they really do skating. Sometimes its for the good and sometimes its for the bad.

I loved inline skating for fitness. I couldn't run far due to knee problems, I then took to inline & did 3 to 8 miles in the evening without any knee issues due to the lack of pounding on the knees. I loved cruising the streets, as an older bloke. I lost stones in weight & put on some great shaped leg muscles.
Sadly, the inline skaters were very fickle & intimidated by boarders, they should have stuck to their ground & toughed it out, even with the lack of TV exposure. I hate fads, as they come & go; I like it to become a part of life. I still inline at times, not as frequently as years by (life gets in the way....WORK & FAMILY!). I think it's great to do inline & quads, mix it up a little, they both have their strengths & beautiful feel.
Forget adverts & sponsors having to build the sport/hobby, just buy a pair & get out there with safety wear (important!).
Let critics say what they want, just get on with it, because u will look very cool still, regardless of what the twonks say. Share the love & respect everyone around you.
Skate on & enjoy Inline/Quad Skaters

For me, rollerblading was about getting ahead of the struggle and winning in life without selling out. Completely unique and independent. Rugged individualism. Literally getting ahead of the world, and winning despite whatever was thrown at you.
Literally, skating through life and styling on the competition.
We should consider making some sort of mass exodus away from TH-cam, TV, film, anything and everything that doesn't actually support us. Not for the sake of keeping it "underground", but for the sake of preserving the community.
People are always seeking alternative platforms. People are always talking about how they need to just "get off social media".
Let the skating and the community therein be the only form of recruitment and advertisement.
    That's how it started anyway.
    I know what's up.
The invasiveness of these devices is making people sick. Get off your phone and go skate.

The movie will get a bunch of kids to wonder and a small percentage will try it out. It wont hurt at least. I see blading steadily gaining ground and all sports becoming more inclusive. Bikes, Blades, Boards founded extreme sports and it will be like that again. Tougher though since the world is trending to a far less physical and social medium of interaction. It may take till the end of the decade but I feel aggressive blading will be back in the XGames and onto the Olympics by then. Hope at least. Just keep skating and getting out there. There's a channel called Hop King - it;s a beer brand and skateboard crew and they do videos where they hit the streets or a park. Usually long-form (20-30 mins long) and biased WAY more towards the crew chilling together, trying (and missing) tricks and landing SOME tricks. It's really call to watch - the personality is right there on show and they bring in kids from the parks into their vids and engage really well.
Anyway, further to someones point below about the Kelsos, who are incredible, I'd love to see more BTS with them (as an example) - follow them on a skate trip. How many tries did the trick take? Are they laughing between goes? Were the falls worth seeing? How did they celebrate the land? what happened between spots?
I'd love to see it and i think rollerblading could do with some of it.

Why the hate for quad skaters? Is it the connection to skateboarding? Is it a macho thing since most skaters are women and LGBTQ folks? I'm an old skateboarder that just got a pair of skates(Them 909) and I love them. Without quad skates neither sport would exist. People are going big on quads and I don't think they get anywhere near the attention they deserve. I think it would be super sick if there were a few companies that try to bring skateboarding, quad skating and in line skating together under one banner. Like a wheel company or a company that makes grind blocks, rails and anti rocker wheels or whatever. All the urethane slidey parts. How sick would it be to have a team with all 3? It would make for some interesting video parts. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard because all those things use the same materials. Seeing the THEMxWKND collab got me interested in getting a pair of skates. I think all 3 industries could benefit from it. At the end of the day we're all doing the same thing really. There really isn't that much difference between in line skating, quad skating and skateboarding. Even the tricks are super similar. They're even done almost the same. A frontside grind(at least that's what I think it's called) on skates is done the EXACT same way a 50-50 grind on a skateboard is. It's been a pretty easy learning curve getting into inline skating with a skateboarding background. I think to have all 3 sports survive, there's going to have to be some kind of collaboration between them. Skateboarding is in a downturn, quad skating barely exists outside of roller derby and rec skating and inline skating still has a long way to go to get back to it's former glory. I think if we all got together it would benefit everyone.
