He's heavily black coded and is voiced by a black man in the Sonic 2 movie. His quills are even described as dreadlocks which is a common hairstyle black people have. Pretty sure he was also intended to have a Jamaican accent at some point, even his shoes are the color of the Jamaican flag. There's my reason
To me is always interesting to see how bad the world can get without Sonic's interference to save it.
